Albert Pujols is Massively Underpaid – and Likes It
Just what every Cubs fan has been itching to hear: Albert Pujols loves St. Louis, and doesn’t really care about his current contract – which underpays him by some $10 million per year, by market standards (he makes around $15 million per year, despite being much better and younger than Manny Ramirez, who is likely to make $25 million).
Worse still, he’s essentially said that he’ll perpetually take a hometown discount to stay in St. Louis.
“People from other teams want to play in St. Louis and they’re jealous that we’re in St. Louis because the fans are unbelievable. So why would you want to leave a place like St. Louis to go somewhere else and make $3 or $4 more million a year? It’s not about the money. I already got my money. It’s about winning and that’s it. It’s about accomplishing my goal and my goal is to try to win. If this organization shifts the other way then I have to go the other way.”
So basically, unless the Cardinals do a gigantic firesale kind of thing (in which case they’d be certain to move Pujols anyway), he’s going to be a Cardinal for life. And an underpaid one, at that.
