Kevin Gregg is Not a Closer Anymore
Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Kevin Gregg is out as the team’s closer, following a spectacularly awful 4-run 9th inning last night against the San Diego Padres. Manager Lou Piniella said he would make the change on Tuesday, but declined to say who would fill the role the rest of the season. Gregg stared into his [...]
Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 1, Padres 4 – August 17, 2009
It’s easy to blame this one on Kevin Gregg (and I do), but once again the offense failed to do anything. If the Cubs continue to fade away, this season will be laid at the feet of the offense, not the bullpen.
Warning: Shameless Promotion to Follow
Fact: the world doesn’t have enough humorous/awesome tee-shirt vendors. That’s where I come in. A friend of mine – Butcher of Bricks and Ivy Radio fame – and I have teamed up to make the Chicago Cubs tee-shirt universe just a little bit more swell. Or diluted. Our venture is called Unholy Cows (get it? [...]
Ted Lilly to Chicago, Justin Berg to Iowa
With the good comes the sad: the Cubs activated Ted Lilly from the disabled list, and in a corresponding move sent down reliever Justin Berg to AAA Iowa. Berg was moderately successful in his mini-stint with the Cubs, and at a minimum, will be back when rosters expand in September.
Series Preview: Cubs v. Padres, August 17 – August 19, 2009
The Chicago Cubs take on the team formerly known as the San Diego Padres. I guess Jake Peavy probably wouldn’t have been playing at this point anyway. Still, it’s good that he’s gone. A refresher on the series preview here at Bleacher Nation: The idea is to hook you up with the bare minimum of [...]
God’s Wrathwatch: Zambrano to Rehab, Ab Lounge
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano has been out for a couple weeks now with lower back problems. He’s eligible to return from the disabled list today, but he’s, well, not returning. Zambrano threw 45 times in the bullpen before yesterday’s rainout, and all went well. Zambrano reported no problems, and said he felt fine [...]
Obsessive New Ownerwatch: Deal Signed on Friday
We’ve heard this before, but maybe this time it’s legit: according to Dave Kaplan, the sale of the Chicago Cubs to Tom Ricketts will be completed this Friday – at least as far as those two parties are concerned. Excellent sources have assured me that there are no more hurdles to clear and the paperwork [...]

What Will It Take for the Cubs to Make the Playoffs?
By Brett on August 18, 2009
Speaking strictly statistically, things are not looking good for the 2009 Chicago Cubs. Last night’s heartbreaking loss (haven’t they all been heartbreaking this year?), coupled with the St. Louis Cardinals’ win over the Dodgers dropped the Cubs six games back in the National League Central. Though the Cubs are just five games back in the [...]
