Meet the Cubs 2010 Closer: Carlos Marmol
It is not a huge surprise that Carlos Marmol would end up as the 2010 closer for the Chicago Cubs. It is mildly surprising, however, that Lou Piniella would make the announcement already.
“I see that, yes,” Piniella said Monday. “I really do. I think he’s done enough and shown enough. We have confidence in him enough going into spring training next year. It’s his job. We’ll leave it just at that.”
Marmol has 13 saves overall and 10 in a row since taking the job from Kevin Gregg last month. However, control continues to be a problem for Marmol. Daily Herald.
Marmol has been effective enough since he was moved to the closer’s role last month, and sure, he strikes out a bajillion dudes with impugnity. But his 1.46 WHIP would be a nightmare for any closer: for non-stat-heads, that means he allows about a runner and a half every single inning. Just think about that for a closer.
