Huzzah! Ben Sheets is Negotiating with the Cubs! Er, and a Bunch of Other Teams

Chicago Cubs Rumors

Even though the Chicago Cubs have placed Ben Sheets on the back burner while they search for a fourth outfielder and reliever, the back burner is apparently not too far back.

According to Jim Bowden, the Cubs are among a handful of teams in “negotiations” with the free agent starter. After his successful throwing session last week, Sheets is reportedly seeking an $8 million guaranteed base salary this year, which would seemingly place him firmly outside the Cubs’ currently-available resources.

Sheets still looks like a long shot, but as we’ve said before: there can be no doubt that the longer this drags out, the better it is for a team like the Cubs. Sheets has supposedly told friends he’d like to pitch for the Cubs, and as the offseason winds down and the market of suitors necessarily diminishes, whatever the Cubs are offering starts to look better.
