Angel Guzman Leaning Toward Career-Threatening Surgery
After being diagnosed with a significant tear in his throwing shoulder this weekend, Chicago Cubs reliever Angel Guzman was presented with two options: rehab or surgery. The former was less likely to get him back to being an effective pitcher, but the latter risks ending his career for good.
Right now, Guzman is leaning toward having the surgery.
”It’s going to be tough,” said Guzman, 28, who was diagnosed over the weekend with a significant ligament tear near his armpit and instability in the shoulder. ”But it’s better than not having it and not having a chance. Doing it, I have a small chance, but there is a chance. So I’m going to take the chance.”
Guzman’s decision isn’t final, but he’s not ready to give up on his career, even in the face of another setback. He already has had shoulder and elbow surgery.
”I love pitching. I’ve been pitching since I was 4 years old,” he said. ”I’m still 28. I think 28′s a good age to keep pushing it.”
Guzman plans to see famed orthopedist James Andrews — who performed both previous operations — early this week, then consult with his agents and family before making the final call.
”It’s very sad, but what can I do?” he said. ”I’m still breathing.”
He might seek a third opinion.
The Cubs’ medical staff recommended four to six weeks of strengthening and rehab, followed by a throwing program instead of surgery.
”I think there is no chance to get it fixed without the surgery,” Guzman said. ”By doing rehab, it wouldn’t do anything. I spent four months here working out [over the winter], and I felt as strong as ever. And still, pain. I think that’s the only way to get it fixed.” CHICAGO SUN-TIMES.
Obviously you feel for the guy, but it’s strange to see the opposing opinions, and his clear rejection of the suggestion by the Cubs. The Cubs say rehab should be fine, Guzman says that won’t do anything. Are the Cubs just being selfish, realizing that if Guzman has surgery, he definitely won’t be back this year, and they’ll have no choice but to non-tender him at the end of the year? Whereas, if he rehabs, there’s at least a chance he confirms he can still pitch this year?
Just a sad situation all around.
