Marlon Byrd is (deservedly) an All-Star for the first time in his career, but he’ll be the sole representative from the Chicago Cubs this year.

It is, of course, hard to find All-Stars on this flawed club, but it’s hard to see how Carlos Marmol didn’t get the nod. He’s got a 2.13 ERA, and he’s struck out an insane 69 batters in just 38 innings (a record pace). How is that not an All-Star?

Ace have the cubs signed Ron Golden their 2nd round pick?

Here is my Crazy 4 team trade Ace:

send: Logan Watkins, Chris Carpenter, Kyler Burke, Jeff Antigua, Casey Coleman and Jeff Baker to the Dback. Send Ted Lilly to the Twins. Send Mike Fontento to the Phillies.

Dbacks: send Dan Haren to the Phillies. Send Mark Reynolds to the Twins.

Twins sends: Danny Valencia, Angel Morales or Joe Benson, Tyler Robertson, Adrian Saledo and PTBNL to the Cubs.

Phillies send Jarred Cosart, Domingo Santana, Vance Worley, Jonathan Singleton, and Matt Way to the Cubs.

I know these are hard to make fair, but I think these are pretty good.

      you are retarded.

        So don’t read it.
He’s just like the rest of us, trying to look at the upside of the shittiest season in about 12 years.

Lot to think about there. I’m not sure I’m crazy about the Cubs having to give up prospects to get prospects – I get the idea (bundle B-level prospects with vets to get A-level prospects), but that there just seems overly complicated. Far more likely that we’ll see guys like Lilly and Lee traded for prospects.

        Ace:

Since prospects are going to be the topic for a while, I have a question for everybody. Any chance of moving Matt Spencer to 1st base? I don’t know alot about him but he was a target to get in the Jake Fox trade so he’s probably got upside. His numbers look good at 2A. The only reason I can think is because he’s blocked by Blake Lalli (who will be soon joining JR Mathis and Jason Dubois in the Iowa Cubs hall of fame). Anybody know about him and why they’re not trying him at first? Thanks. Also, aside from all the talk about Jonathon Singleton, the Mets have a kid named Nick Ellis who we could probably get cheap considering how well Ike Davis is doing.

        • Ace

I don’t know why they haven’t started trying him at first, but I’d be shocked if they didn’t (they’ve given him a taste already this year). He’s got huge power potential, but he’s already 24 and he isn’t setting AA pitching on fire.

My guess is that the near-term future first baseman is either already on the big team, or will be a free agent signing. It would be nice to get an Ellis or a similar blocked prospect (the Rangers have a couple, if memory serves), but there’s a bit of risk in relying on a recently-acquired youngster to take over at first.

Marmol almost certainly would have been picked if the Cubs weren’t so awful.
