Reports are breaking that the Padres and Red Sox have agreed in principle to a deal for Adrian Gonzalez that will involve pitching prospect Casey Kelly, and probably at least first baseman Anthony Rizzo.
I can tell you that the Cubs were working frantically until the last minute to pull off the trade, going so far as pulling in a third and fourth team to try and make the deal work, but apparently, the Red Sox prospects were too much for the Cubs to match.

Once again the Cubs don’t have enough talent in their system to pull off a trade. Not enough talent at the major league level. Not enough talent in the minors. What is Hendry’s job exactly?

We have one of the best Farm Systems. I’m not sure why we couldn’t get Adrian, but meh. Its not like even with him, we would do anything major. But we do at least need to get LaRoche and Hudson. If we don’t get at least those two, then all hope is lost for me period. Unless they pull some magical trade out of their butt.
Berkman just signed with St. Louis. Where’s Hendry?
I’m not really in the business of giving Hendry the benefit of the doubt, but I still think waiting things out is the right approach. Berkman would have been a solid addition, but $8 million is basically the entire offseason budget.
The Cubs aren’t doing crap while all other teams are getting better. How frustrating is this.

Derrek Lee? He still doesn’t come up in rumors, but I’m starting to wonder.
1. are they going after Davis out of panic or do they really want this guy? don’t make trades to show you’re doing something, make moves to improve the team.
2. any idea on what the Cubs offering in the A. G. deal?
To the first, they’d been on Davis for a while, so it’s not a reactionary thing. Part of the reason they were looking at him, though, was because the Padres like him. The Cubs still want him, though.
To the second, I’ll be putting up a small post on that tomorrow. Not sure exactly what the Cubs were offering, but I do know a few pieces the Padres wanted and the Cubs wouldn’t deal.
