Chicago Cubs GM Jim Hendry and new Cub Matt Garza spoke to the media this weekend about the pitcher’s acquisition, and about his future with the Cubs – both immediate and long-term. First, the Garza quotes:

  • “I’m excited to be a part of this long tradition, and try to get this thing turned around in a good direction. We’ve got a lot of the pieces to the puzzle right there in Chicago, ready to do it.”
  • “Before the Rays won 96 games, they were in the cellar of the AL East. We just went in there with all positives. We went in there [and said] ‘We’re in for a dogfight so let’s go get them.’ That’s the same attitude I take year in and year out. It’s going to be a dogfight no matter who you face. Our opponents are Major League ballplayers so nothing is going to be handed to us. Right now, it’s going to be a tough race and let’s see how we get ready and get it done. Why not?”
  • “I had the pleasure of seeing [Wrigley Field] yesterday in its snow-covered glory. It was outstanding and I love it. As long as the dimensions are the same, I’ll be all right.”

And the Hendry quotes:

  • “You don’t always pull off things the way you want to. Sometimes the names change. But I will tell you that Matt Garza was a guy we targeted. I didn’t know if we could do it, but that was the one [trade] that made the most sense for us.”
  • “It isn’t often you can acquire a 27-year-old top-of-the-rotation kind of guy that has three years left before he becomes a free agent in any kind of a trade. Obviously with that comes trading some significant young talent back.”
  • “We’re not giving away the farm to try to win in one year. That couldn’t be farther from the truth with a guy like Matt Garza.”
  • “Matt’s 27 and he’s going to be a Cub for awhile. We look at this as a great trade for the present and the future.”

Hendry says they didn’t trade the farm away….Well if you count Brett Jackson and Andrew Cashner as the farm, then hes right….We’d better have a good pick in the draft this year….
