New Chicago Cubs’ owner Tom Ricketts appears to be making good on his promise to spend, in other areas, what he doesn’t spend on the Major League roster.

To wit, today the Cubs signed two relatively big-time Cuban players – outfielder Ruby Silva and catcher Yaniel Cabeza – to add to their system depth. Cabeza will get $500,000 and Silva gets a cool $1.2 million.

Silva, 21, is a versatile left-handed hitter who played center field for the champion Havana Vaqueros in the 48th Cuban National series.  He can play all three outfield positions and perhaps even the middle infield.  He’s a good athlete who draws praise as a plus runner with a plus arm.  He could begin his pro career in low A ball with the Peoria Chiefs.

Cabeza is a catch-and-throw backstop who reminds some of a young Yadier Molina, though his bat has improved in the last year.

The signings, in and of themselves, are not huge news. Good news, yes, but not huge news. But what they represent – the Cubs’ continued effort to spend in the right areas – is seriously encouraging.

We’ll have more on the two prospects soon.

Outfield prospect very intriguing…..1.2 million lotta dough…in your guys opinion, at that price….equal to late first round?…second to third?…I coach high school and a kid in our league who got drafted in the top twenty got about a million(of course his signability probably got him that high)…either way I gotta think it’s a good sign..

My friend, Jake Smolinski, who was drafted out of High School in the 2nd round by the Nationals and had a full ride to Clemson, got $500,000 Signing Bonus, I doubt your player got a million out of high school unless his name is Manny Machado.

Late first rounder – picks from about 20 to 32 ranged this year from $1 million to $3 and $5 million (for tough signs). Hayden Simpson (16th) got just $1.06 million. So yeah, this kid is a serious prospect.

Thanks for the response Ace…..Actually Mike S. his name is Mike Foltenewicz from Minooka,IL…and the Astros drafted him in the top 20 because he would sign for the ‘low’ amount of about a mil., that and he throws in the mid 90s..the MLB draft numbers are all over the map…one of our kids a few years ago got drafted in the 14th round and he got 100 grand signing bonus….just depends on the team…
