The race to join Pat Hughes in the radio booth is down to just two, and the final decision is expected before the beginning of Spring Training.

WGN general manager Tom Langmyer said he hopes to announce a replacement before spring training starts. Our industry sources tell us Keith Moreland and Dave Otto appear to be the two finalists, barring any late developments.

“I believe in teamwork and that will really play a big role in the new partner, because I want to really feel that he is a special part of our team,” Hughes told us. “The concept of chemistry is not something that is automatic or immediate. It is something that has to be nurtured and cultivated and developed. Ronnie and I got along well at the start, but nowhere near as well as after we had been together for a few years and kind of learned each other.” chicagotribune.com.

Hughes’ new partner is expected to join him at the mic on February 27, when the Cubs take on the Oakland A’s.

I vote for Moreland….when he subbed for Ronnie, it was a whole different broadcast…now Ronnie was great, but you have to admit..there were some areas where he lacked: ie: knowing some of the Cubs own players, having original thoughts, saying any sentence that did not start with “back in my day” or “when I played”….courageous man, good guy, amusing to listen to…but when Zonk(Moreland’s wonderful nickname for those who don’t know) is in the booth, he is very informative and insightful..

    Please make it Dave Otto!

I REALLY hope Keith Moreland gets the nod. Not only is he knowledgable about the game, he’s HILARIOUS. I remember on one of the broadcasts where he subbed for Ron he said about someone striking out on a change-up: “Now that’s what ya call looking for the express and gettin’ the local!” Great stuff! Otto just doesn’t seem to have the sense of humor Moreland has, and that’s important in a game that lasts 2-3+ hours.
