The Cubs won’t get too many chances like today: the team’s “ace” going against a call-up, emergency starter, and facing the best team in the league with a chance to take a series at their place. But the bats faded late (like they’ve been doing all year), and the pitching stunk early. And Marlon Byrd failed to produce with men on. Again.

But there’s only one way to describe Dempster’s first inning…
