Matt Garza has been scratched from his start tomorrow due to “elbow tightness.” The Cubs say they’re not seriously concerned, and hope it will just be a one-start-skip kind of thing. He’ll see a doctor on Monday, and may get an MRI.

What a Cubs fan hears: Matt Garza’s elbow has exploded, he’s out for this year and half of next year. The season/decade are over. Good night.

Although Randy Wells is scheduled to pitch tomorrow at AAA Iowa, the Cubs plan to go with an all-bullpen day instead of calling someone up, and will almost certainly lose. Hooray beer.

Sorry for the glibness, but… I’m not too happy.

UPDATE, from Mike Quade to reporters before the game: “He’s got a little stiffness in his elbow. We’re going to be real careful with this guy. We’re going to skip his start tomorrow and get him some rest and see what happens. It sounds like it’s not something serious. It sounds like he makes his next start. We have the off-day (Monday). We have four guys we can run out there if he needs (more time). I would literally say this is day to day.” He also called James Russell – 10+ ERA as a starter – the “prohibitive favorite” to start.

UPDATE, from Matt Garza: He’s not terribly concerned, either.

Is there no one in AAA or AA that could get a call up for a day… I know it will take a move but can’t Maine or Russell go down and give a kid a chance

    • Ace

Seems like there should be, especially because Randy Wells is starting at AAA on Sunday. Someone is already displaced.

      • Michigan Goat

Well that makes sense… so it would never happen.

God , I just read this on ESPN. God really does hate us, doesnt he? The term “Bullpen Night” doesnt make me feel better especially since the Sox are hot and riding a streak.

  • Jamesjones

A fellow Cub fan just text me and said that Russel is a likely starter? Anyone hear the same? If thats true then I just wont even bother watching the game.

    • Michigan Goat

That’s sounds lime good solid Hendry/Quade logic… It’s so obvious

    • Ace

Yes. Quade called him the “prohibitive favorite” to start.

  • Jamesjones

    Shit.

How can Ricketts remain so quite? This has to rank as one of the 4-5 worst organizations in all of baseball. Painful. Absolutely painful.

And it was just two days ago coming off a sweep of the Marlins, a strong performance from Coleman, Wells starting his rehab, and heading into a pivotal series against Boston that the team seemingly had some hope. If this was Dempster or Zambrano, I don’t think it would be as bad, but for Garza, Wells, and Cashner to all be out it paints a really dark future.

The Garza trade just keeps looking better. How many games do the Cubs have to be out before Hendry’s fired? There’s a loophole. What happens if they’re 10 or more games out before the June draft? I say sign him to an extension.

There’s no possible answer to this mess. Why doesn’t Quade play Campana nd Castillo? What does he have to lose? Is he so thrilled with Hill and DeWitt that he can’t bear to not play them?
