Setting aside the errors, it was a solid win all around. Carlos Zambrano was good on the mound and even better at the plate. Carlos Pena and Kosuke Fukudome went deep, which was appropriate given the recent (legitimate) griping about the team’s lack of power. The only Cubs starter without a hit was Koyie Hill, which, obviously.

I watched the first five innings of this game and was wondering when the Fuld comparisons would start….

Excuse me, good sir, but the Fuld comparisons – by me – started the day Campana was called up. FLY, TONY!
Should be 17 hits! But they still somehow managed to LOB 20!
If Dickey hadn’t gotten hurt the Cubs would have lost.
Take what you can get.
Just saying don’t get too excited by winning a home series against the Mets. A team the Cubs should have swept. If Dickey hadn’t gotten hurt the Cubs would have lost 2 of 3. The Pirates will win 2 of 3 or sweep. At least there’s the draft to look forward to.
Just read that Zambrano went to see the Cubs physician after the game about a “stiff neck”.
The article also went on to add that he was put on the disabled list back in 2008 with a shoulder injury after originally saying it was a stiff neck.
“Very insignificant,” Hendry said.
Sounds eerily similiar to how they tried to make small potatoes out of Garza’s “elbow stiffness”…

I’ve heard that one before, a couple of times already. So, I expect this will lead directly to more starts for our favorite spot reliever/Glendon Rush 2.0.
I’d like to see Campana start more often… It this isn’t proof that he can hit and field his position, well I can’t think of better proof… well maybe catching a fly-ball in his hat would have been cool.
And to say the team is better without Byrd is a little premature. I feel that Campana has shown more energy than Byrd but as said earlier, it’s the Mets, not the Phillies or any other powerful team.
Good to see a series win though. Now it’s time to go back to the old tradition of actually beating the Pirates.
Be careful with your hopes for Campana. Young, non-big-time prospects like he often come up and have a stat-bump in their first couple of weeks while the league gets a book on them. I do like his speed and defense, neither of which can be scouted away.
Again, just saying, the Cubs don’t consider him a “real prospect”. They cite his size, blah blah blah. He’s young, he can play CF, he can lead off. What do they have to lose by sticking him in there for a couple of months? 2 things could happen. He could succeed. Or the pitchers could “figure him out”.
I don’t disagree, though it’s hard to just cast Reed Johnson aside when he’s playing so well and when, theoretically, the Cubs still have a tiny chance to win.
I do like Reed Johnson. Man! The inability to get rid of Soriano really sucks.
Campana isn’t considered a “real prospect” by many, including the Cubs, so I suspect they’ll turn him into a reserve outfielder and then trade him. Why not put him in CF and let him leadoff while Byrd’s out?
You know what else sucks? As frustrating as this 3 season (2009-2011) stretch has been, Soriano still has the rest of this season plus 3 more full ones left on his contract. How’s that for a sobering thought?
Zambrano: 4/4 with 3 RBIs in the series. Seriously.
