Who’s ready to laugh?

Yes, another Cub is likely heading to the disabled list. This time, it’s second baseman Darwin Barney with a strained PCL in his left knee. Sadly, the strain occurred when he scored the winning run on Monday.

The strain is just a Grade 1, the mildest form. Barney would probably be good to go in a week, but the Cubs will once again play it safe, and give him the full two week DL stint to get better.

The corresponding move today will be intereting. Alfonso Soriano isn’t quite at 100%, but the Cubs might just active him anyway, and let him sit the bench a day or two. Blake DeWitt figures to share time at second base with Jeff Baker in Barney’s absence, which might not be the worst thing in the world for the Cubs. DJ LeMahieu, unfortunately, will remain with the big club, sitting on the bench.

(UPDATE: the predicted moves are now official. Barney to the DL, Soriano activated.)

Running this blog is going to take years off your life expectancy.

I’m afraid that being a hardcore Cubs fan has already done that to me. Might as well keep going. I guess I’m like a 65-year-old smoker that way.

either that or ace may go on the DL himself!!

  • Fishin Phil

I heard Ace has been battling through blisters on his keyboard finger. He’s a gamer!

Fortunately it’s just my left pinky. A, Q, and Z have been tough letters for me this week.

Well, this could be worse. Hate to see Barney go down, but DeWitt has been playing well and hopefully Baker can pick up where he left off earlier in the season.

jesus christ, the cubs truly are cursed. their injuries this year are rediculous, never seen this many before, EVER!

What’s the deal with Barney? I’ve heard Grade 1 sprain of the PCL with minimum time on the DL and RotoWorld says Grade 3 sprain with at least 3 weeks recovery.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Ace

Trying to find out more. So far, the only reference to the grade 3 strain is on Rotoworld (and other sites who are getting their info from Rotoworld). Wonder if there’s conflicting info out there. This morning, the news was definitely that it was very mild, and just a week or two type injury.

    Good. Thank you, Ace.

This could end up being good for both the Cubs and Barney. He clearly needed a couple of days off, it will give DeWitt more time, it could lead to some p.t. for LeMahieu, and it will probably put Castro in the two hole for the duration.

Right. You’d think that. Which is why Castro is leading off tonight.

      • Michigan Goat

Ah Cub logic, gotta love it.

Looks like Hendry and Quade are here for the duration. Ricketts just had a “State of the Cubs” press conference.

    • http://twitter.com/thomaswconroy TWC

Aren’t those usually immediately followed by someone getting canned?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Ace

Thanks, Toosh – got it up. Loving the new name, by the way.

Well, that was one depressing news conference! Rick Telander had an interesting article on “what if” Marc Cuban was allowed to buy the Cubs. I remember when Ricketts bought the team and my brother got all excited, I told him then, be careful what you wish for. Ricketts could be a modern version of Bill or Smokey Bidwell. If Hendry is safe with this team, how bad does it have to get before changes are made? 5 or 6 consecutive 100 loss seasons?
