Ramon Ortiz and Chris Carpenter to Chicago, Casey Coleman to Iowa, Marcos Mateo to DL

The results aren’t quite in yet on reliever Marcos Mateo’s MRI, but the Chicago Cubs aren’t waiting to make a move. Today they sent Mateo to the DL, while calling up reliever Chris Carpenter (who was, himself, just sent down a few days ago) to take his place.

The Cubs also selected the contract of starter Ramon Ortiz, who will make his season debut today, in place of Carlos Zambrano. To open a spot for Ortiz, the Cubs sent Casey Coleman – who started yesterday in place of Ryan Dempster – back to AAA Iowa. The move suggests that Dempster will indeed miss just one start with his back/intestinal problems.

Ortiz was 6-3 with a 4.26 ERA for the AAA Iowa Cubs this year. He hasn’t pitched in the bigs since mid-2010, and before that, 2007. Keep your expectations in check.

I thought a team had to wait 10 or 15 days before calling a player back up after he was sent down?

Only if it’s not the corresponding move of a player going to DL.

I’m curious about Dempster’s “back/intestinal” problem. I don’t believe in coincidences. If you have back pain and nausea…I think kidney stone. If it’s not nausea but the screaming shits then I have no idea.

I watched Ortiz pitch at AAA Iowa last friday. He pitched decent with his fastball touching 91 MPH at times. He got the win with a lot of run support, I would not expect him to eat up very many innings though in his start tonight. Lets get ready for a worn out bullpen, and expect Wells to get outstretched again.

Hmm… it appears that Ramon Ortiz is not the answer. ::shocked::

I wonder what our record could be if we didn’t count the first innings?
