A tweet a couple minutes ago from “CarlosPena22,” a brand new Twitter account (replete with misspellings and “lmao,” things not reminiscent of the Carlos Pena I’ve seen), says this:

“I want to thank the cubs organization for putting me in a place thats all about winning… Im on my way to New York to play for Yankees.”

Needless to say, I’m highly skeptical. I’m digging for confirmation, but I don’t think I’ll find any. This has hoax written all over it.

UPDATE: The Cubs’ Front Office Twitter account is looking into it, but, from browsing their tweets, it looks like they are as skeptical as I was. In some ways, these wild goose chases are fun; and in other ways, they make you wonder why some people are so lame. If you’re going to try and pull off a hoax, at least improve the execution such that it can’t be debunked merely by looking at it. Also, follow Bleacher Nation on Twitter, and you’ll get these kind of shenanigans first.

UPDATE II: I’m hearing from folks on Twitter (have I used the word “Twitter” enough?) that the Cubs are spreading word that the account is indeed a fake (and Carrie Muskat just said the same). I should be a detective. But only where the cases are really obvious.

I’m guessing it’s Jim Hendry making up twitter accounts again.

“Interest in Pena is at an all-time high! Just look at Twitter!”

  • dreese

Yea its just Jim Hendry goofing around on the internet again instead of doing real work.

  • auggie1955

I just read on NSBB that Buster Olney had mentioned on “Mike and Mike” this morning that the Yankees might be interested in Pena. Maybe that gave someone the idea to play a prank with a phony Pena twitter account.

I could see him being a decent DH for them (because Teix isn’t giving up first), but then they lose his excellent glove. They’ve also got a ton of lefty bats already.

  • Fishin Phil

Brett said “I should be a detective. But only where the cases are really obvious.”

I’m kind of picturing you as a cross between Monk and Columbo.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

You give me too much credit.

Although I am much better looking than either Peter Falk or Tony Shalhoub.

  • Michigan Goat

I think we need an over/under on how many fake tweets/reports that Brett falls for in the final hours of his trade deadline marathon.

    • Jeff

I was planning on starting a couple of fake accounts myself, just to see how crazy he gets on Friday.

      • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

        I hate you both.

        • Michigan Goat

You didn’t think the money we gave would be without repercussion, I’m looking forward to going Merciless Pepper of Quetzalacatenango crazy.

And then a wolf with the face of Jody Davis emerges from the sky to be Ace’s “spirit guide”.

Dear Mrs. Ace… sorry in advance for all the trouble we’ve caused you.

            • http://twitter.com/thomaswconroy TWC

er… coyote, that is. Not wolf. I know some of you wouldn’t forgive that transgression.

              • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

                You don’t know ANYTHING.

      • Michigan Goat

I think around hour 22 a twitter blast of insane rumors should flood the BN page.

        • http://twitter.com/thomaswconroy TWC

Oh, indeeeeeeed. For a dude that’s never pulled an all-nighter, he’s gonna be in for some madness.

  • D-Day Simpson

    Is @BNduped trending yet?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

You do realize that I called it fake from the very beginning, right? In what way, exactly, was I duped?

  • D-Day Simpson

    Forgive me @BNnotduped

John Heyman is reporting on twitter that the Yankees have claimed Pena on waivers. Maybe not such a HOAX after all.
