Chicago Cubs On the Verge of Trading Kosuke Fukudome to the Cleveland Indians (UPDATED)

As has been rumored for about a week now, today the Cubs are expected to complete a deal that would send outfielder Kosuke Fukudome to the Cleveland Indians, according to multiple sources.

Fukudome is in the midst of one of his better seasons as a Cub, and, as an impending free agent, he was one of the Cubs’ most tradable pieces. Fukudome is owed about $5 million for the rest of the year, and the Cubs will likely eat most of that. The return is expected to be a couple prospects, on which I will have more later today, if and when the deal becomes official.

SMALL UPDATE: I should have noted originally that Tyler Colvin is almost certain to come up and get regular starts in RF for the rest of the year. And, according to just about everyone, that’s what’s going to happen. There is also a rumor that the two prospects the Cubs are receiving are 21 year-old High A outfielder Abner Abreu and 25 year-old relief pitcher Carlton Smith. Without going into it too much – I’ll analyze when the deal is final – that rumored return seems awfully slim if the Cubs are indeed eating as much as $4 million of the remaining dollars on Fukudome’s contract.

Fukudome is one of my favorite cubs and it will be sad to see him go.

Sayanora Helicopter Boy! Good luck in Cleveland!

  3. Cheryl

Wish him the best. He hasn’t been a home run hitter but he’s a solid player.

  4. pfk

Solid fundamentals, glove and arm, a good fill in piece for a contender not a feature piece as the Cubs use him.

    1. Michigan Goat

The Cubs are full of those players.

the prospects are one upper level and one lower level. thats all i got

    1. dreese

I have heard that one is a pitcher and the other positional not sure which one is the upper or lower though

never thought this was a good signing, but, he’s about the only guy on the roster who knows how to take a walk… so our team OBP will dip yet again.. and he was one of our better defenders, another area we struggle with… oh well, we suck either way.

This is good to see. Fuku has been decent, but he’s been needing to go for a while now. They need to bring Colvin back up and let him start in right for the rest of this season if they complete this deal.

Its kinda funny to me though. The Cubs are definitely considered sellers right now. Yet any deal I’ve heard about that involves the Cubs also seems to involve “eating part or most of the contract”. Sellers usually get paid for what they have, not pay to get rid of what they have lol.

we can think Jimmy boy for that!

I can’t wait to see Campy in there every day!

But glad to see Fuk go.

      You mean the “Franchise” DeWitt?

    2. Michigan Goat

I’m not looking forward to Campy’s defense. He has a D+ arm and runs bad routes on balls if Soriano is still in LF our defense is in trouble.

Fuko has been a solid all around ballplayer… just tough to look past the overpriced contract and wonder what else we could have got in return for all that $$$. Enjoy Cleveland.

So who’s coming up to take his roster spot once terms are finalized?

Read this write up on Abner Abreau http://www.indiansprospectinsider.com/2010/03/indians-top-50-5-abner-abreu.html

The third paragraph scares the crap out of me.

      Haha!! NOOOOO!

      1. Joe Cartwright

Right now, I don’t think that can be taken as a compliment.

The saddest part about this deal is that now we have to watch Colvin play in place of Fukudome. Tyler hasn’t done anything at Iowa and he is still stiking out a boatload of times.

Of course this trade will get finalized around 1:20 pm, so that Hendry can appear in the booth with Len and Bob to explain it. Hendry is a tool.

Now is the time to rid of Soriano. Lets get some speed on this team.

  14. die hard

Byrd to right and Campana to center is what I hear

HO HUM, not really sure if this helps or hurts, at least we got two warm bodies for him.

Deal is done…i just saw the prospects we got…abreu is the better of the 2 prospects received …
