It’s a waivery kind of afternoon, apparently.
Phil Rogers is reporting that the Chicago Cubs are considering making a waiver claim on White Sox pitcher Gavin Floyd. Doing so, according to Rogers, would be a prelude to multi-player trade talks.
While trying to nail down a starting pitcher for next year is a fine goal, I’d have to question the wisdom of a large, multi-player deal driven by an interim GM. Wasn’t the entire reason the Cubs’ stood pat at the non-waiver trade deadline because they knew Jim Hendry was out the door, and team-building decisions should be made by the next guy?
I have a hard time seeing the Cubs suddenly changing course under Randy Bush (no offense to Mr. Bush) and making huge moves in late August.
Floyd, 28, is signed through 2012 ($7 million), with a team option in 2013 worth $9.5 million. Floyd has been trending downward the last few years, culminating this year in a 4.45 ERA over 155.2 innings.
Floyd makes only $7million in 2012, this is a no brainer if the organization is going to pay BigZ to walk/pitch for someone else ..even Floyd’s 2013 club option of $9.5mil is cheaper than what Garza will be making in 2013
Garza seems to have upside potential.

I think it could be a good move, Floyd havin an ok year, but still is having a better year than Dumpster, hes younger and his contract for next year would almost be half of dumpsters contract, could be good number 2-3 starter still only 28 yrs old. Got to have someone fill the rotation, dont think I can stand to see Lopez and and Coleman in the rotation for next year, we have no shot to win
i dont want to see Lopez & Coleman in the rotation now/for the rest of the season. It makes for horrible baseball/poor attendance/my liver hurts ..hopefully this deal gets done
While I agree that we’re going to have to have pitching, overpaying Dempster is not a good reason to overpay a Floyd. Two wrongs still don’t make a right.

Add to that: Floyd would be settling. He’s not garza nor an ace. Id rather wait for awesomeness than overpay for mediocre.
I doubt there would be “overpaying” involved. Floyd is very much worth his salary, and he would be a solid back-end of the rotation guy on a team that really needs one of those.
Meh, I don’t totally agree,…although I was referring to what we might have to give the sox to get Floyd over to the light side of the force.

Food for thought: Since 2008, his ERA has been going up and his innings pitched have gone down every year.
I don’t like that trend for 2012.

I was looking up the guy’s stats and saw some interesting numbers. While his IP’s are down (and ERA up), his WHiP and K & SO/9 seem to maintain themselves or improve over the last few years. What gives? Baseball-reference.com doesn’t have BABIP numbers (that I could find in eight seconds)… has that gone up significantly?

Still, looking at those numbers, he’s having a (mostly) average year, but the downward trend is apparent. Weird.
He’s still got a positive WAR, so at least he’d be an improvement on 60% of our rotation.
He’d be our number three right now and would be a good pickup if we don’t havevto give too much. I wonder if this is where we can unload Z?
Hopefully the previous commentors statements about Garza don’t start a brushfire of misinformation that the Cubs are considering dealing their best starting pitcher away. Unless I missed something that was mentioned, then my apologies.
If the Cubs brass is able to come to an agreement with KW for Gavin Floyd, I’d have to imagine that it would involve some sort of reclamation project, washed up veteran or some combination of both. That has always been the KW way, i.e. David Wells, El Duque, Contreras, Sweaty Freddy, Pods, JD, Juan Pierre, Manny, Junior, Q, Pods again, the aforementioned Floyd, Jenks, Thornton, et cetera, et cetera…
Who do you suppose the Sox may ask for in a trade for Floyd?

True, but don’t underestimate the ERA escalation when coming from any other team to the Cubs.
Not sure if he has signed a contract or not, but I would love to see the Cubs pick up C.J. Wilson from the Rangers.. It would be a good addition to our awful pitching staff we have now.
For now, he scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the year. He’s going to get PAID by someone.
MLB trade rumors is reporting that Brian Cashman has said there will be no trade for Pena….Muskrat Carrie is reporting the same thing….and I wonder if this Floyd thing is another one of Phil Rogers delusional ramblings
Odds are strong that Pena goes nowhere, and the Cubs don’t claim Floyd.

I’m casting my lot with the Pena-stays crowd. Among other reasons, it’s a good excuse not to make a play for Peeholes or Fielder.
“We already have a good first baseman who can (sometimes) hit for power” sounds better than, “We’d rather spend our money elsewhere than Peeholes or Fielder.”

I heard that both the Yankees and Red Sox are also interested in Gavin Floyd. If either or both teams have already put in a waiver claim on Floyd then the Cubs become the ‘odd team out’ in this equation anyway and it all becomes a moot point. While I wouldn’t mind seeing Floyd come to the North Siders, I just don’t see it happening right now.
How do the Cubs become the odd team out? If the BoSox/Yankees/Cubs all put in claims on Floyd, don’t the Cubs get the (exclusive) chance to negotiate with the ChiSox for Floyd? The two teams can either work out a trade or the ChiSox can give Floyd up for nothing, but they can’t bypass the Cubs to deal with the Yankees or BoSox.
Waivers go through the one league at a time, so no NL team could claim him until all AL teams pass.
