Quantcast

The Cubs came back late only to lose it in extras. Randy Wells did the opposite of what he usually does – he was great early, before running into trouble in the middle innings. Indeed, he wasn’t able to make it out of the fifth inning, and the Cubs’ early 4-0 lead was gone rather quickly.

And Brandon Phillips is loving on the Cubs right now, with four homers in as many games. You’re welcome.

It appears that Quade wanted to make sure the entire bullpen was present.

  • Andrew

And (I know it’s a small sample size, so don’t crucify me) LaHair continues to distance himself ahead of Colvin as someone who deserves a shot next year. If 1 for 3 lowers your average, I’ll take that.

  • Fishin Phil

So does this mean we won’t be catching the Reds this year?

  • die hard

LaHair’s defense not as good as Colvin……I would like to see Lamehieu given a shot in outfield so can concentrate on hitting…Castro to 3rd next year makes sense if that defense hot shot in minors (whats his name?) can hit .250 and bat leadoff….should not give up on Barney as starter next year at 2nd….I think our catching situation needs tweaking…Pena having career year…not sustainable…would not care if he was replaced by Ramirez at first…if can play 3rd, can play 1st……a Soriano/LaHair platoon in left next year may be in offing if Colvin falters…got to find a place for Campana….need to find 3 starting pitchers that are not in rotation now which may have to come via free agency…

    • Hogie

I would way rather see DJ get a legit shot at second base over Barney. Barney’s numbers right now are about what he averaged in the minors. Keep him for a sub at short and second, but DJ has way more upside.

  • Baseballet

LaHair also had two walks to go with his hit (and two strikeouts).  His OBP is .531 so he’s been on a great little run.  Even if he turns out to be Pena-Lite, his versatility (first base, LF, RF) would seem to make him at least a credible bench player for the Cubs next season.  Toss the chop sticks and pick up a fork Bryan, you’re staying where you belong in the city of big shoulders.  Let’s all enjoy LaHair Fever while it lasts!

Need more complete sentences.. Hard understand you point times…

      I know… right…I’ve pointed this… out before…glad someone else…notices…

During the 24-hour trade deadline blogathon, I went on a rant over use of the  ellipse point (…) that permeate some of these comments. They have a purpose but when they are used like periods it just looks like a schizophrenic typing.

My favorite grammar site Grammar Girl gives a good breakdown over the use of the ellipses http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/ellipsis.aspx

        • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I wonder if I’m in part to blame – I’m a big ellipsis fan (actually, I’m a big interruption-punctuation fan – this is like a meta comment within a meta comment … I love it), and I probably use it with regularity.

  • joeybats7

this Dj lamehieu love has to stop, he is trash! i would take barney over him any day, barney hits for a higher average and plays better D than Dj. send Dj back to double A were he belongs!

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Not that batting average matters as much as many folks think, but LeMahieu is a .317 career minor league hitter (as a much, much younger guy than Barney), and Barney is at .287. If you’re talking about LeMahieu’s whopping 43 ML at bats, well, I don’t have a response to that. Nor do I care to formulate one.

  • joeybats7

    i’ll do the honors papa bear. 43 at-bats, 11 hits, 0 homers, 0 triples, 2 doubles 9 singles,and a whopping 256 BA, with a sexy 273 OBP.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I think you misunderstood me. “Small sample sizes” is a concept I should be more agressive in espousing.

      • Hogie

You can hardly even call that a “sample” at all. Add in that they all came in sporadic starts and pinch hits, over two callups and it’s more like a crumb. This is a young guy who has been putting up numbers in the minors that are very similar to what Castro did before his callup. I’m not saying that he is as good with the bat as Starlin, but add in that his defense is far more advanced, he is worth giving the shot, and is a much better option than Barney.

    • willis

Because all judgments should be made after 43 at bats…right? Dude has way more upside than Barney and he could be the 2B of the future, so slow the hatred down homie.

  • Ronnie

Sorry papa(Brett) I have to agree with Joey, i mean if lemahieu gets the job at 2nd, then we mind as well let campana start in center next year. there both trash, and the only thing campana is usefull for is pinch running (20-21)

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

It concerns me that people are ready to call LeMahieu “trash” based on a very successful minor league career and then 43 ML at bats, all in the name of defending an older, much less successful in the minors, terrible in the Majors player in Darwin Barney.

      • TWC

Yeah, but Barney is scrappier than LeMahieu.

        • Fishin Phil

True, but DJ has more “upside”.  :)

          • http://calebshreves.blogspot.com Caleb

Possibility #1: you were using “upside” facetiously, joining me in my overall disdain and condemnation of the term. Awesome + lulz!

Possibility #2: you were using “upside” seriously. If so I have some stocks I think you might be interested in.

            • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I just don’t understand how a Cubs fan can possibly dislike “upside”… it’s our bread and butter!

            • Fishin Phil

I will leave you pondering the possibilities.  I am a riddle wrapped in an enigma.

              :)

      • willis

Seems as if some ignorance spilled into here today. Not to mention awful grammar. Lord have mercy.

LeMahieu is far from trash. That’s simply a dumb statement.

  • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

I love how my “Papa Bear” nickname has taken on some traction…

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Is it wrong if I don’t?

  • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

It just makes us more likely to use it- Papa Bear

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      Don’t I know it…

      • TWC

        … seems … kinda … creepy ….
