S-Cardenfreude: Nothing But Ryan Theriot Screwing Up

It’s fun to remember back to last offseason around this time when the St. Louis Cardinals picked up Ryan Theriot to be their starting shortstop. We were all to familiar with Theriot’s limitations, so the prospect of him manning the most important position on the diamond for the Cards was a chuckle-inducing happy fest.

And then the Cardinals won the World Series. Motherf….

At least part of that was due to picking up Rafael Furcal midseason to take over at short, though. So, I guess it’s still OK to laugh at Theriot as a Cardinal.

To that end, here is a video of nothing but Ryan Theriot screwing up (use that link if you can’t see the embed – and, apologies in advance if the video is taken down):

Scardenfreude may be the best work anyone has ever done…anywhere.

Thank you, Brett…thank you. Your work here will never be forgotten.

  2. Fishin Phil

    Thank you, Brett!

As hilarious as that was, I have one suggestion:  Needs more TOOTBLANs.

  3. TWC

    Best.  Video.  Ever.

  4. CubFan Paul

  5. Cubbie Blues

Good to know he IS on the right side of the rivalry for us that is.

  6. Cliffy

That video was fun to watch.

Question for Brett, is this weekend the deadline for teams to set their 40 man roster’s ? Cubs will have many changes I’m guessing .

    Amazing… simply amazing

I started laughing and then, due to the overwhelming voluminous nature of his ineptitude, broke down in tears. God help us, he is still a Cardinal…

Just remember, the Cardinals took a heckuva second baseman in the draft. Watching him shoot up the farm system should make you feel a little better. You know, in between watching reruns of the last five innings of Game Six.

QT @ChiTribRogers: Source: Cubs finishing details w/Sveum but won’t reach deal before tonight. Friday news conference expected.

Classic video! The music in the background couldn’t have been more perfect!

  12. TSB

And the worse thing; that video was all from the same game!

QT @CSNMooney: Theo declines comment on Sveum, says process is in “final inning.”

QT @CarrieMuskat: Theo says #Cubs and #Redsox will table compensation talks until after Rule 5 Draft

That’s pretty adorable, he tried so hard to look cool on some of those.

  16. Justin Jabs

That was incredible! I loved the Ump/Schumaker/Theriot argument, too.

You, my friend, have brightened up an otherwise bad day with this….Thanks I needed that….LOL

  18. Incredibad

Holy cow!  Brett – this just made my day!  Thank you!  The soundtrack is a nice touch.

  19. Eric

I wonder if Castro can be made to look that bad. (probably not lol). But I’d love to see a video montage of some of the amazing plays Castro has made.

  20. Ryan

Hahaha, I loved the ending: “It was pretty bad”.

Oh man, that was a hoot! I used to like Theriot, because I watched him (and Fontenot) in a ton of I-Cubs games over the years. But Mikey didn’t shoot off his mouth when he left the Cubs to go to the Giants. LOVED the part where he was being wrangled by Pujols!

Man Theriot makes castro look Gold-Glove

  23. M12_Jazz

Best part is when he rolls the ball to 2nd. Reminds me of Sandlot

  24. aubreyblue2

And he hit .083 during the Series. And yet he still has that WS ring.

  25. mark

about half of those would have been outs had d-lee been the first baseman. He made a lot of cubs infielders look a bit more solid than they actually were.

  26. montellew

After seeing that, I laughed until it hurt! He makes Castro’s rookie season mistakes look mild! LOL

  27. RW

I love Castro as much as the next Cub fan-
And I have no doubt that in a couple years he will be much better.

    But :
    Theriot (2011)
    132 Games
    Fielding percentage 0.956
    Errors 17

    Castro (2011)
    158 games
    29 errors!!
    Fielding percent 0.961
    (career fielding % 0.956)

    1. TJ

probably not the best way to compare the two players defensively

(not that other statistics would say otherwise…)

  28. RW

Yes, it only tells part of the story.
But Castro led the league in errors.

His “Total zone fileding runs above avg” was -15
His “Total zone fielding runs above avg per yr ” was -13
i.e. he cost 13 more runs than avg per year.

Theriot was -8 and -13 at SS
    and +3 and + 21 at 2B.

Listen- neither of them are good defensive shortstops.
But statistically Castro is actually worse.
(At this point in his career)

Great video Brett. Theriot deserves it for running his mouth when he signed with the cards. Lost respect for him then. And yes, I am sure Castro could provide with a similar reel, but at least he has some range (I guess). Hopefully the Cubs can hire someone to teach them how to field the ball (at least him and Soriano).

By the way Brett, this is a great website and I have been checking it everyday since I found out about it a couple of weeks ago. I appreciate your work.

Dougy—That was a great video. Kudos to Brett!
