A tandem move with a theoretical Paul Maholm signing? It’s fair to wonder.

Tonight, Dave Kaplan is reporting that the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers are “down the road in discussions” about a deal that would send Matt Garza to the Tigers for prospects. There are no details from there at this time.

The Tigers, among many other teams, have long been in discussions with the Cubs about Garza, but, until now, it would have been difficult to characterize those discussions as advanced. In fact, I’ve been told that the Tigers have been at the table, and then away from the table, and then back to the table, and then away from the table, before this report.

While I have no reason to doubt Kaplan’s report – he’s been exceptional with this kind of stuff lately – I should caution that the Cubs are believed to be having discussions with a number of teams about Garza presently, and are holding firm to a very high asking price. These kind of trade talks, as you’ve seen, can drag out for a very long time, only for nothing to ultimately happen, and then both sides deny the talks ever took place.

  • King Jeff

So, this is either not happening, or it’s going to be announced out of the blue in the next couple of hours, right?

    • Kansas Cubs Fan

      That wouldn’t be surprising.

  • BFiddy

Turner and Castellanos as a core of the deal would be nice…  :)

    • Tyler31

      That would be great

  • Spoda17

lol… I highly doubt that it will be in the next couple of hours…

  • Spoda17

I think this is more banter.  Not that Kaplan is fabricating it, I just think at the end of the day, Garza will stay with the Cubs, and be resigned.  I used to think he was gone 100%… but I have a feeling Theo will keep him now…

    • JR1908

Something’s gotta give with all those SP’s on the roster though.. But ur right could be another fake rumor.

  • http://bleachernation.com loyal100more

announced out of the blue seems to be the trend with the front office… let the topic get cold in the media and then BANG pull the trigger. i wouldnt be in the least bit surprised.

  • The Mayor

What Cub exec is Kaplan’s source? It’s clearly not any of the new guys. I’d venture to say its Crane Kenney, the Marketing guy, the PR chief, or Oneri Fleita.

Kap is lucky the Threo didn’t clean house otherwise he’d be out of sources.

  • Michael Vazquez

ENOUGH, Theo & Jed!!! This is getting old and so tiring (to me), just extend the guy!! You been asking a very high price for the guy for a couple months already, teams just don’t want to offer any of their top prospects. Forget about it guys, Garza is 28 and he’s young enough to build around.

    • Gabe

how do you know that theo and company aren’t trying to move garza to make room for a huge free agent signing or two next offseason?

      • http://bleachernation.com loyal100more

i truely believe they will do just that

      • http://bleachernation.com loyal100more

how bout matt cain and cole hamels? thats what im hopeing

        • SteveO

I would be shocked if either of them made it to free agency.

          • North Side Irish

And if either of them do, expect an all-out bidding war with Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, etc. No chance Cubs get two pitchers in that class.

            • Lou

Exactly. No big FAs are coming for at least 2-3 years. This is TB Rays north and that’s fine as long as works.

  • ferrets_bueller

    “Turner or castellanos”

It had better be Turner AND Castellanos, or Turner and another top guy (preferably, because I’m not really all that high on Castellanos).

    • http://bleachernation.com loyal100more

castellanos does nothing for the big club this year. that is a certainty. and maybe not next year either he seems to be a bit aways. not sure why the big hype… i know hes theyre former number 1 pick from 2010 but hes far from impact

      • Gcheezpuff

I don’t think the pieces coming back are to help them compete in 2012. Hoyer & Theo are trying to rebuild the organization so all levels are good and they are constantly producing major league talent. The cubs also need to free up some roster spots for Woody and Maholm so I’d expect specifically “prospects” coming back in this deal.

        • Lou

          I don’t think Woody’s coming back..sorry.

          • Tommy

Check out this link bout 1 minute in:

            http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=20048183&c_id=chc

“You have a team that really respects the player, wants him back, desperately”

“I’d be gravely disappointed if we weren’t able to bring him back”

“I think this one should work out.”

            I hope you’re wrong.  I love Woody!

    • http://bleachernation.com loyal100more

      turner and castellanos and company….

  • http://bleachernation.com loyal100more

im already adding turner to my mock rotation!

  • Ryan

I would guess Turner is in this deal but with Porcello opting out and now arb eligable could hae be in this deal instead of Turner?

  • http://bleachernation.com loyal100more

and stock piling castellanos in our farm… just need to know who else cuz i know thats not all.

  • http://bleachernation.com loyal100more

i thought originally we were talking turner and another SP prospect… cant think of the name

    • Jacob

      Oliver? Smyly?

      • http://bleachernation.com loyal100more

yes oliver… thank you. as i recall quite a decent prospect in his own regard i think they’re number 2 pitching prospect if i remember right

  • cubsin

if the Cubs get Turner and two of the lefties (Oliver, Crosby and Smyly), they can keep Castellanos. Of course, that would further compound the roster problems.

    • http://bleachernation.com loyal100more

but what a great problem it would be

    • http://bleachernation.com loyal100more

and can you imagine what the farm looks like if this goes down. stocked!

  • Cheryl

It can’t be just those two. I wonder who else is in the mix.

  • Ryan

I’d like Turner and Smyly to start with. Im not carzy on Crosby a little wild

  • Ryan

I think if they get Turner which should be a must in this deal then It’s highly likely that Dempster will be traded by the deadline

  • http://bleachernation.com loyal100more

boy we are gettin young in a hurry! oh yea this is a matt garza rumor, so its probably all just nonsense. man that is a terrible thought.

  • Ryan

I wonder if this is Jut Garza on the move to the Tigers if it happens of is someone else going along?

  • BFM

They better get something good in return if they pull the trigger.

    No Jacob Turner…….no deal!

    • http://bleachernation.com loyal100more

i think turner is the starting point of any deal with detroit. given we have been told the asking price is high id say thet would certainly have to start with they’re number 1 pitching prospect, or else how does the conversation get “down the road”right?

      • Toosh

Agreed. Turner for sure, plus 1 other pitcher and one other player seems about right.

  • R.I.P. SANTO

Rizzo at first kid from the reds at second,Castro at short ,castellanos at third, turner ace of staff Jackson ,szcur, solder, cespedes? Outfield…….. could be the making of a great young team

    • http://bleachernation.com loyal100more

      yeeee hawwww!!!!

    • SteveO

Javier Baez and Zeke DeVoss just shot you the stink eye.

      • ferrets_bueller

I’d much rather get another pitcher instead of castellanos.  I’m not really a castellanos fan, I like Baez better.

    • http://cubbiescrib.com Luke

That kid from the Reds is a good prospect, but I don’t think he’s one of the four best second base prospects in the Cubs system. The Cubs are loaded with young middle infield talent.

  • Joe

Ya know what would be the best part if this trade goes down besides restocking the farm system? Sending Garza into the same division as the Sox!

    • TWC

That thought does indeed give me a tickle.

  • realist

I know he’s not considered as highly as some of these other prosepcts but Vitters is the same age as Rizzo, same draft, but Vitters was a 1st Rounder. If we could get a guy like Castellanos that would be nice, but I hope it’s Turner, Smyly, and other pitchers. With Rizzo at first now, Vitters could move to OF or go back to 3B. I think Vitters & Junior Lake are two guys flying low on the radar but who could be significant guys later.

    • Adventurecizin’ Justin

Yo realist…I’m with you on Vitters and Lake. Both have some amazing talent…I hope the new regime can get them over the top.

If Rizzo, BJax, Vitters, Lake, etc., start the season at Iowa, me and some buddies are takin’ some road trips from Peoria!!

      • http://cubbiescrib.com Luke

You’re going to have some great prospects to watch in Peoria as well. The Chiefs should be stacked this season.

      • jandersonjr81 father of Caden

Lake reminds me of a young Bo Jackson, other then the fact he’s not an out fielded. Great build though. I would keep him at all cost.

  • Ryan

I think its interesting that if you look at the Cubs moves they have yet to double up on a fielding position

  • Ryan

Can I get a Garza and Vitters to Det for Turner, Castellanos, Oliver and Smyly as well as a PTBN

    • TWC

      Yes.  Yes, you can.  Please?

    • When the Music’s Over

Beat me to it by three minutes. Was in the middle of writing my post.

    • http://cubbiescrib.com Luke

Only if you’re trying to get the Tiger’s GM fired.

    • King Jeff

Only if the PTBN is Justin Verlander.  Otherwise, no way the Cubs should throw away the season for some prospects who probably won’t work out anyway.  If they make this deal, I’m not going to any more games ever, we need to boycott, now.  This is ludicrous.

  • When the Music’s Over

Wouldn’t surprise me to see Vitters also go back the other way if Turner, Castellanos, one of the lefthanders and another mid teens prospect come over.

I guess I just can’t see the Turner, Castellanos and one of the lefties for just Garza. That would be a bomb haul.

  • notcubbiewubbie

hope this isnt another tease. boy you think these guys are better than jim hendry?

  • JR1908

Vitters is ranked 4th compared to Castellanos at 7th overall for 3rd baseman. Not that those rankings are everything, but am i missing why Vitters is valued way less?

    http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2011/index.jsp?tcid=mm_mlb_news
I was wrong Vitters is older though..

    • ferrets_bueller

Thats backwards, Vitters is 3 years older.  And the reason why he’s higher on that list is because that list is for 2011. It’s heavily weighted on which players will have an impact next year, not how good they will be in their careers.  Which is why a guy like Matt Dominguez is number one- despite that fact that his ceiling is going to be Pedro Feliz.

Vitters is valued less because he has a horrible approach at the plate, and is lazy, and plays horrible defense.  While Castellanos also has a fairly questionable approach, and is quite, quite raw, he’s also younger and at a lower level.

      • JR1908

Yes, i corrected the age thing already… I knew i was gonna get called out! Good pts. though..

      • http://cubbiescrib.com Luke

From all accounts I’ve seen, Vitters is far from lazy. He’s consistently referred to as hard working a coachable. He had the lazy knock on him for awhile, but I’m not sure to what degree it was ever warranted.

On his defense – he’s one year older than Starlin Castro, and third base is about as demanding a position as short. I still think he’s moving to left or first base myself, but let’s not write the kid off yet.

His approach at the plate is getting better, but he’s never going to be a high-OBP guy. But he’ll never be a high strikeout guy either. His fans project him as about a .300 hitter in the majors, his detractors generally concede he’ll hit .260 or better. His power has been late in coming, but he should produce well enough for left and third before its all said and done.

A lot of Cub fans have soured on Vitters because he has been in the farm system forever, but at 22 he’s still a pretty decent prospect. He’s probably not going to emerge as a future Hall of Fame third baseman, but he still has a great chance to become a solid everyday third baseman and a quality bat in any offense.

  • Spencer

I heard the Cubs were going to trade Garza to the Utah Jazz for Karl Malone and a player to be named later.

    • cubs4life

haha, and pull Jordan out of retirement to play LF.

      • ferrets_bueller

I wouldn’t mind Brian Jordan haha.

  • Sam

Why trade Garza ? Is not Garza the type of pitcher the Cubs are looking to attain? Is he not a good pitcher , a good leader , a positive influnce in the clubhouse. I mean of all the pitcher lil theo has added to his bandaid HMO castoffs is he not simply the best pitcher the Cubs have? or did he cross Lord Sith Theo – did he ask for a raise ( its not like Garza gonna quit over a pay dispute) Is he friends with Zambrano ?

    • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

He can fetch the Cubs a haul of prospects that can either 1-become homegrown stars or 2-can be used to get a Garza in a couple of years when we are ready to compete. That’s why.

      • Sam

        it all good

      • cubsnivy56

        Thanks for answering that question……………….again.

      • Sam

or they all can be poopers in 3 years

        • TWC

Yeah, and Garza could walk into a bus tomorrow. What’s your point?

          • SAM

Is not Garza the type of pitcher the cubs are trying to get? i think would be my point.

            • Brian Myers

I’d say that the Cubs want the best value (in talent and finances) that they can get for their organization. Sure they want a pitcher “like” Garza. They also want a deeper minor league system. If they can get more value for Garza than Garza will provide for the Cubs organization long term, they’ll move him. Or if they can get a player in a difficult position to develop quality in (with less depth across the major league level) for Garza, they will listen and perhaps make a move.

It’s about total value and if you can raise that total value. Garza is major league ready, other organizations may give up more value long term than Garza provides to have a chance over the next year or two. It would suck today, but could make Cubs fans happy for a decade.. if that came along then it would be worth it.

    • JR1908

What…. You don’t agree with the direction of the Cubs?? Who would have thought…. That point hasn’t been drilled into everyone’s head enough yet…..

      • Sam

drilled ….. keep drilling …… i have not seen the light …………..

        • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Really need a thumbs down button or an ignore button so this board makes sense again.

        • Brian Peters

I’m sure this question has been asked a gazillion times already, but what I would like to know why our friend Sam chooses to post on this site every day, MULTIPLE times a day?? I mean, I don’t go on a Bears’ site and ramble on about them sucking (even though they do). That just isn’t enjoyable…..but I’m halfway sane.

          • SAM

when do we stop rebuilding ? and start stocking?

        • Eric

Questions for you Sam.  1) How old is Garza?  2) at what ages are the typical “prime years” for pitchers 3) how old is Turner 4) at what year will Rizzo, Castro, Jackson, Turner be entering their primes?

        • Mick

No, guys, I think Sam is right. We should should change our entire off-season plan and not build a model of sustained success. Quick, who’s old, slow, and injured? Sign him up!

          • http://www.michigangoat.blogspot.com MichiganGoat

Manny Ramirez is looking for a job or we could field all the on the cusp HOF players. So we could get big names, get old, and save money. Plus Dick Tidrow is our entire rotation, bullpen, and closer. Sounds like a winner to me.

          • JR1908

Screw Prince Fielder… We should go after his dad Cecil. He would fit right in with the fat, old, slow, and has been way that your asking for Sammy.

  • Cliffy
