I made my first podcast appearance on Scooping the Texas Rangers last night, discussing, among other things, the future of the Cubs’ rotation, Matt Garza’s value in trade (and why is he being traded so frequently?), and various Prince Fielder rumors. You can listen to the podcast here, and I show up around the 18/19 minute mark (though it’s a good listen throughout). Todd Kaufman runs a great show, and I had a blast participating. Face for radio and all that. My bit is about 25 minutes long, so you should probably draw the bubble bath and pour the wine first.
- New Cubs pitcher Paul Maholm says his shoulder issue last year was “just” a strained muscle, and he worked with Dr. James Andrews to strengthen the shoulder over the offseason.
- Maholm also says he didn’t mean to scoop the Cubs’ media by announcing his signing on Twitter. “I had known for a few days,” he said. “Yesterday I passed a physical and it’s kind of tough sitting around not being able to say anything. Spoke to Jed earlier and everything was official. I wasn’t trying to scoop [the media] or anything. The night before I took beatings for [tweeting about Broncos quarterback Tim] Tebow and beating the Steelers, and discussing what kind of beating I was going to take from the Pittsburgh fan base. It was all positive and seems like most of the Chicago fans are looking forward to me coming to the city. So it was something good to get to see the fans’ reaction through the Twitter.”
- The Emperor returns. It looks like, contrary to his previous statements that he’d retire at the end of his current contract, Bud Selig, 77, is going to be extended for another couple years, through 2014. His compensation package, at present, is valued at about $22 million annually. I’m not sure I’d retire, either.
- The Cardinals have signed Koyie Hill to a minor league deal, so the season has been cancelled. The Cardinals have been given another World Series trophy, and we’re just going to start right in with the 2013 season. Voodoo magic. Hill even grew another couple fingers.
- The Cubs’ front office is not married to any particular players anymore, which is a concept that we’re all just going to have to get used to. It’s a stark contrast from the previous regime, that clearly had “favorites.”

Koyie Hill will become a hitting machine. Voodoo Magic indeed!
Isn’t that something you would expect. I love Koyie for everything he’s been through. One tough dude. But time to move on.
THE HORROR, THE HORROR REDUX
“The Cubs’ front office is not married to any particular players anymore” – Its about time! Business is business.
Wouldn’t it be great if it worked like that at work!
You’re not well-liked at work?
Go figure.
Your back? Thought somebody would have shot you by now.
“Your back?”
His back what?
Bazinga.
Haven’t seen EtotheR posts in a while and now he/she pops up like the nightmare he/she is. Always trying to strike an argument. Go away Goat!
Boy if that ain’t the pot calling the kettle black I don’t know what is.
And yes, please learn the difference between ‘your’ and ‘you’re’.
It’s time for business. It’s business time.
wearing my business socks.
You haven’t had your after-work social sports team practice, so you’re not too tired.
It’s business time.
A visit to the mental facility 15 Bucks and lunch and a great feeling of how lucky we are. MLB owners paying Uncle Bud 22 M, simply priceless.
Hill will make the roster, take Molina’s job and put up a line of .579/ .756/1.250. He’ll break Barry Bond’s HR record in Wrigley, and finish the season with 94 total, with 242 RBI’s. VOODOO Magic at its best. At his MVP press conference he will complete bash the Cubs organization. The following offseason, Sammy Sosa will sign with them.
Package deal Soto, Wells and Sorry to anyone. There has to be an American League team that would consider this offer.
Just listened to Brett now on the podcast – wow the Rangers guys gave you a great intro and outro! You can tell Brett’s a former lawyer when he speaks – sounded like constant analysis of his words on the fly as he speaks – the very reason Brett reads Theo and Jed so well! LOL Overall, great job, Brett! Now get your own Bleacher Nation podcast
Thanks, MW. That lawyer approach never leaves you, I suppose.
Bleacher Nation Podcast. Why not Brett? A lot of work, but if it was once a week, it sounds like a lot of fun too!!!
A podcast has been discussed with a variety of folks. Nothing imminent, though. As you said, it’s a lot of work – a surprising amount. Would definitely be fun.
“I made my first podcast appearance on Scooping the Texas Rangers last night”
So, thats what you sound like. I feel like I almost know you now, Brett. I have seen a picture and heard the voice. I am going to say thats all I need for right now. Don’t really need to complete all the five senses. I have no interest in what you smell, feel, or taste like.
I am not going to make the obvious joke that of course you want to feel him…not gonna go there.
Those senses would great you as follows: (1) Old Spice with a hint of cat, (2) lumpy, and (3) sweet and salty like a chocolate-covered pretzel.
Words cannot express the disgust I feel at imagining your taste. New new year’s resolution: no more chocolate-covered pretzels for this guy …
Well, with those three covered, I am not as worried about you making the trek out ot Des Moines sometime this summer. We can move right along to the next step. Matching BFF anklets.
“Old Spice with a hint of cat”
Well, there goes my breakfast, thanks.
Am I funny again?
You would be, ‘cept I kinda believe the description.
I think Theo has some inside data on shoulders. Although he always claimed the Red Sox program for pitchers’ shoulder strength was just like anyone else’s, pitchers coming to Boston always cited the program or Mike Reinold. Also, when Theo went to Chicago one of the first people he tried to take with him was Reinold. I don’t think he was (initially) successful. Theo got Reinold from the above mentioned Dr. Andrews. He also must have some proprietary metrics on various training programs.
Does anyone know if Mike Reinold finally landed in Chicago? I seem to remember some noise about him being replaced in Boston last month (we had some other training issues), so he might have become available???
As far as I know, the Red Sox wouldn’t let him go. He’s still listed as their head trainer.
I saw Budlite in person a couple of years ago. He didn’t look a day over 60. Either he’s got a great plastic surgeon or he’s found the fountain of youth.
Test him for PED’s?
Maybe he bought the fountain of youth, considering how overpaid he is.
$22M annually for Bud? Where is the outrage over his salary? Frankly, I consider Bud the Soriano of MLB commissioners.
Does he set his own salary? Thats almost the payroll of some of the smaller markets.
Agreed. Selig is another in a long line of bad Commissioners I’ve seen in my lifetime. Numerous poor decisions.
He has tried in several ways to ruin baseball. The worst of course being forcing interleague play down our throats even though we as fans clearly didn’t want it. Except for huge crosstown markets, it doesn’t make sense. I would lots rather see more NL games and proportional division play.
I think interleague was handled wrong but is necessary to continue to grow and develop the sport. Rather than making a novelty out of it they should have just made it a part of the game like it is in football. With the 15/15 setup in 10 years interleague will just be another part of the game.
Paul, to hell with the Chicago media. Tweet away.
+1
So Brett, now that you are a breakout podcast star, can we expect a huge movie/tv contract on the way??
Great content in the podcast (concise with just a hint of wordy), although I disagree about the ongoing Fielder thing. I think he is all dressed up with no place to go, and both he and Boras are coming across as looking like greedy pigs.
Anyhow, good job as usual, thanks.
Pure entertainment
“concise with just a hint of wordy”
If you knew me in person, you’d know that that may be the best compliment I’ve ever received. Much obliged.
Permit me one more compliment then.
I don’t want to get maudlin here, BUT
That is one of the greatest and for sure the cleverest titles I have ever seen.
Thanks again.
Because I am the only person in the world who knows this: Video Killed the Radio Star was the 1st music video showed on MTV.
BOOM
Awesome’d
I’m not trying to be mean, but I’m pretty sure every person in the world between the age of 20 and 50 knows that. It’s Pop Trivia 101.
You will just have to take my word for it, but I also knew that one. I use it for a little trivia if I ever hear the song on the radio while with others. Just didn’t want your ego to get to big
