Pre-Gamin’: A’s v. Cubs, Lineups, Broadcast Info, Etc.

Today is the Chicago Cubs’ second Spring Training game, and second against the Oakland A’s. The Cubs are facing a split Oakland squad (as in, they’ve got two games today, so only half the roster will be available to play the Cubs), so at least the chance of victory – to the extent that matters to you – are improved slightly.

The game is at 2:05 CT, and will be available on WGN radio – yes, that means the return of Pat Hughes and Keith Moreland.

Ryan Dempster will get the start for the Cubs, and I’d imagine we’ll see some of the bullpenners we didn’t see yesterday. That won’t include Kerry Wood, however, who’s expected to make his Spring debut later in the week.

The Cubs’ lineup features only a couple of repeats from yesterday’s group of starters:

1. Tony Campana, CF

2. Darwin Barney, 2B

3. Starlin Castro, SS

4. Bryan LaHair, 1B

5. Jeff Baker, RF

6. Reed Johnson, LF

7. Steve Clevenger, C

8. Blake DeWitt, DH

9. Josh Vitters, 3B

Are you sure it’s Pat and Zonk?  Wasn’t yesterday’s game on WGN, too?  It was Len and some fill-in dude… Brenly stopped by the booth on his way to get a hot dog, and it was easily the best part of the broadcast.

  2. Cedlandrum

heres hoping that Vitters has a great spring and it continues over into the year.

  3. Luke

Looking forward to some reports on how Vitters looks at the plate.

Does anybody have any idea if the game will be broadcast on I’m a Cubs fan in Pittsburgh and do not get WGN radio

    1. Cubbie Blues

I’m planning on listening online at

      1. Luke

Are they allowed to broadcast spring training games through the WGN website?  I know regular season games are blocked; I assumed the same policy applied for spring games.

Edit: No baseball through the WGN website, even in the spring.

        1. Cubbie Blues

Oh well, I guess I won’t be listening to it then. I guess better to be disappointed now then later.

      2. Joe

Bummer, that site’s blocked at work. No streaming for me, even in-season… :(

    2. Andrew

This isn’t free – but the MLB at bat app for android or iPhone is $15. Every radio broadcast for the whole season including spring training.

      1. TWC

Yep, and you get to watch one game a day, too.

Sad thing is..not only do I live in Phoenix-but I work in Mesa-my office is 3.81 miles away from “the ho”

Been a long time viewer on this site (first time poster). Really thinking about ducking out to watch the game and sippin an old style.

Broke down and got the sub for $25. I probably won’t keep it for the regular season, but they have video for ~10 of the Cubs ST games and audio for all the rest. And it’s been kind of nice to get an early look at some of the other teams, like seeing Strasburg pitch for the Nats yesterday.

    Ooohhh, I’m gettin da fever!

  8. Joe

Game started like an hour ago! Anybody got anything to report? PLEEEEEASE? ;)

    1. Luke

There’s a game day thread going on the message board.

Scott Maine was effective in an inning, Josh Vitters made a good play at third, and Keith Moreland has baseball mixed up with Terminator.

      1. Joe

        Bless you. :)

    2. TWC

Darwin Barney has 16 homeruns.  Which is 5 fewer than Tony Campana.  Exciting game.

      1. Joe

        Teehee! *GLEE*

Patrick, noone wants to hear how Y%$#& close you are to the Cubs spring trainng facility. Except me of course…

    1. Patrick

You think it would be great and it is very nice! But its tough to be focused and productive when I know cubs are here in Mesa. Every morning during ST is like “Hmm well what I can I come up with to go check out a game?” doesnt help I have cubs gear all over my office.

Following this site a while now I know most of you are smart enough to know thats not a good way to go about your job-esp in this ecomomy! The weekends are great though-Get to follow them around the the Phx area- any vistors looking for info about the (mesa, phx, tempe, glendale, surprise, or goodyear) areas let me know! Sounds like a lot but really they arnt too far from eachother well besides mesa(east) to surprise or goodyear (west). Born in Oak Park -rasied in Phx.

DeJesus notwithstanding first 4 in lineup looks like opening day to me

  11. ty

Patrick–I live just across the street from the infield diamond at Fitch. So you are down Center ST and appears from mileage you are in one of our government buildings. Question–are you the mayor? If so no wonder we have so many problems as you are trying to sneak out of city hall.

    1. Patrick

Dangerously close…however no where near Mayor material. Iam close to dobson and main.

  12. Tarheel Cub

That first four would suit me… for now.

    1. SirCub

Go Heels! Glad to have another Carolina fan around!

But yea, Campana and Barney shouldn’t be at the top of the lineup… not with the OBP’s they sported last year.

      1. die hard

a year under their belt makes a difference with 50 pounds of muscle gained between them. should be able to get the ball in the gaps for doubles and triples

  13. YeOld17

    Carolina/cub fan here in Charlotte : )

    1. SirCub

Alright! Hope you’ve been rubbing it in to any and all dookies you’ve came across the last few days!

  14. Tony S

Cubs fan in Australia…only 14,274 miles from Hohokam Park.
Cubbie Blues got my hopes up with the WGN radio link for the game.

    1. ty

Road trip Tony! Did you know the Austrailian pitcher we had for the last few years–just released last year–forgot his name but a great kid.

      1. Tony S

I wish Ty! As soon as I win the lottery its happening.
The Cubs have Ryan Searle on the farm but I think he’s still with them??

        1. ty

lhp Cody Hams. At times showed out but time ran out. Hopefully he will get another chance–six foot 4 inch lefthander. Great kid.

          1. Tony S

There’s quite a few Aussie kids playing in the College system these days so hopefully a few more get drafted in the coming years. I’ll have to make do with following Searle’s progress for now.
Ideally he develops a filthy swing & miss pitch, has a breakout year in 2012 and is the Cubs #3 or 4 starter on the 2014 World Series winning team.
