Today the Chicago Cubs head back to Camelback Ranch, this time to take on the Los Angeles Dodgers. The game is at 2:05 pm CT, but remember that you sprung forward an hour today. So, like, that probably impacts you somehow. I’m no physicist, so I don’t really understand time travel.

Matt Garza makes his second Spring start for the Cubs after, technically, being the Cubs’ worst starter of all the rotation candidates the first time through. The Cubs will face former friend, Ted Lilly.

The game is once again on WGN, but get your fill – the Cubs aren’t televised again until next weekend. The Game Thread for today’s game lives here.

The lineup features Blake DeWitt getting another start (and cleaning up). Haven’t seen much of Adrian Cardenas since early in Spring Training:

1. David DeJesus, RF

2. Jeff Baker, 2B

3. Starlin Castro, SS

4. Blake DeWitt, 3B

5. Marlon Byrd, CF

6. Reed Johnson, LF

7. Welington Castillo, C

8. Anthony Rizzo, 1B

9. Matt Garza, P

Seeing DeWitt bat cleanup has caused me to have a Quade grandmal seizure–where in the hell is the sod. dilantin?

I’m guessing its to get him some ABs?  i dunno.  But if you replace him with Stewart, and Johnson with Soriano, thats not a horrible lineup.

I hope Marlon Byrd gets another home run so I can watch him sprint around the bases again.

Nice to see Boots getting some more time at Catcher.

    • Bric

Nice.Took me a few minutes but I got it. We could also call him Beef.

      • DocWimsey

How about “Waiting for the Prussians”?

        • Bric

Catchy but a little long. How about just Duke?

          • ferrets_bueller

            Or Waterloo.

          • DocWimsey

So, should they play “Sir Duke” or “Waterloo” when Castillo comes to the plate? I’m more partial to Stevie Wonder than ABBA, myself….

      • ferrets_bueller

Haha, nice, as well.  I’ve been calling him ‘Boots’ in my head since he first became a Cub, finally got around to putting it on paper…err, well, virtual paper, haha.

I’m curious as to why Rizzo is batting 8th. Wouldn’t the Cubs want to see what he could do in the middle of the order? I’m assumming that’s where they will have him when he heads to Iowa.

    • njriv

True, but I think Sveum just wants to get the regular guys more at-bats

    • DocWimsey

Also, PAs really are PAs, especially in spring training. The pitcher is going to try to get Rizzo out, and that is the same whether he’s batting 1st, 5th or 8th. If Rizzo is playing Epstein’s style of baseball, then he’s looking for a pitch to drive, and that is the same whether he’s batting 1st, 5th or 8th. The only thing that will change is how often this will happen.

my guess would be to get most of the other players used to around where they would be batting during the regular season.  1,2,3, and 5 are probably where they would bat, when they play.  And if you look at it position-wise, it looks even more like what will most likely be the regular lineup.

  • Matt

Makes sense, and if that’s the reasoning, then I think it’s a good lineup.

  • Gregb

I can understand wanting to get regulars their at bats but why not start bret jackson? Grantex he’s most likely if not for sure headed to iowa but it would still be nice to see him get some at bats against mlb starters idk maybe im missing something

  • Gregb

You would figure he would at least start one out of three games

So far I’m impressed with the teams ERA. Just over 2.00. Not sure how it compares with the rest of spring teams but impressive for the worst team a year ago. I know small sample, pitchers ahead of hitters blah blah but I’m liking it.

My question is why doesn’t Dale get Edgar Gonzalez more at bats?? The guy is hitting everything! I would love to see him on our bench starting the season.. Good club house player does anything asked! I am rooting for him to make the team this year
