The Cubs have another night game tonight, taking on the Brewers in game two of their four-game set. Lefty Paul Maholm makes his Cubs debut, facing fellow lefty Chris Narveson. It’s going to be a cold, breezy evening at Wrigley.

The Cubs’ lineup isn’t quite all right-handed, like you might expect against the lefty. Both David DeJesus and Ian Stewart draw the start, despite their poor splits against lefties (Stewart’s (career .738 OPS against lefties) aren’t quite as bad as DeJesus’s (.690) though).

  • joe

Mather should be in RF and leading off today.

    • MaxM1908

I was just thinking the same thing. He played well in his start at third on Saturday. I keep hoping to see more of him. This would be the perfect opportunity against a lefty.

      • CubFan Paul

Apparently the smart thing to do is let Mather’s hot bat go cold

        • Joe

Sveum just wants to go against the grain. I don’t like it.

          • CubFan Paul

Going against the grain got Quade fired

            • Bret Epic

Mather or Johnson would please me. Just because Jesus is in your name doesn’t mean he’ll give you the strength to be more than a mediocre player at best from hereon out.

  • CubFan Paul

why no Reed Johnson or Mather vs a LHP?

  • Jonski

Wow surprised they didn’t bench Soriono for Mather given his poor defense last night.

    • TWC

Was Soriano’s defensive night that bad?  He looked fine when I was watching, and made one fairly nice running catch, if I remember correctly.  He just misplayed one ball, right?  If anyone has looked lost in the outfield (and at the plate) so far it’s DeJesus, and yet no one calling for his head.

      • rcleven

Soriano’s got the hot bat right now.

      • hardtop

his head, his head, bring me his head!

        so far? not impressed.

… but nobody decapitates the jesus man.

      • Spencer

you mean you didn’t like that check swing strikeout with the tying run at second?

        • TWC

          Like it?  I LOVED it.

I mean, yeah, that sucked, but if he gets a hit there 3 times out of 10, I’ll be happy.  But I was specifically questioning the defense dig.  I just didn’t see it, but I stepped away front he game fora couple of innings.

    • Mrp

Yeah, that and his atrocious numbers against Narveson.

    • Spencer

I think it was Braun’s double that you’re talking about? That’s the only ball that I can think that he missed, and it wasn’t really a misplay it was a gapper and he’s slow.

  • MaxM1908

Maybe Sveum is trying to boost DeJesus’s confidence? He could really use some good at-bats tonight to get out of his rut. I do think, though, that I’ll curse might loud if he is one-and-done on each of his first two at-bats.

  • Greg

Can we talk about how the Reds will be shackled by an expensive, old, and ineffective right side of the infield in 3-5 years? Makes me feel a lot better than thinking about tonight’s game.

  • SirCub

What was all that Mather-love about in ST, then?

  • Arnie

On paper, this doesn’t look good. A lot of the Brewers hitters have hit very well against Maholm. But anything can happen. Go get ’em boys.

  • MaxM1908

Cubs take the next 5 games–to keep us in line with the 2008 start. All this en route to a 97 win season! Oh, if only my delusions could become a reality.

  • brittney

I think mather in rf leading off with castro behind him. I think castro next year might be able to handle the 3 but this year give him comfort in his 2 hole. He would be more comfortable which will give him better at bats which may turn into those clutch hits we need (and could have used last night).

  • Andrew

I really dont understand benching lahair and keeping dejesus. My guess is Sveum is halfway letting Lahair recover from his back thing, and this is as good a time as any, but Dejesus doesnt look like the better candidate over Mather right now against lefties at least. It is interesting how barney shut us up about him in the 2 hole with 2 walks and a homer last night itd be really nice if he continues to shut us up.

    • Cheryl

If that was the easoning behind Lahair I can accept it. But DeJesus needs to be put on the bench for a while. Why not put Mather in at RF

  • die hard

instead of Byrd 8th….why not DeJesus 8th?…Byrd sees more fastballs and DeJesus gets on and steals or is sac by pitcher so top 3 can drive him in?

  • Cubs Style

Byrd looks terrible. He needs to ride the pine. I thought he got in great shape this offseason? If great shape is having your bat speed looks horrendous he wins…

  • Bret Epic

Don’t lead off with Byrd or DeJesus if neither is going to get on base. In order to get the team we desire, we need to make some moves, that’s all there is to it. Whether it’s trades or demotions/promotions, it’s the only way. It’s not our current roster that stands a chance to win even 81 games this year.

    • Cubs Style

They should have traded Byrd for anything awhile ago. Who in their right mind would trade for him now when he is batting 8th in the Cubs lineup?

      • Bret Epic

Completely agree. I saw that Marmol seemed to be on the decline as well and thought we should have traded him when he was at max value. They’re keeping guys on the decline and not picking up any “impact talent” by doing so. I’d rather rid the team of guys who have little to no impact talent than keep them around and hope they improve past their prime and take away opportunities of young prospects. They’re our future, not Byrd and Marmol and don’t get me started on signing DeJesus. Oh let’s sign a guy who had a career worst year last year because he’s a bargain instead of using someone who could potentially be a much better player. Worst case scenario, I bet we could have brought someone up to the Majors from our farm system who would do at least as well as DeJesus will do this year. Just saying…

      • Ryan

it doesn’t matter where a player is batting in regards to trade value.

  • Cubmig

The Cubs’ April schedule is a tough one. Sveum should do everything to prove he has a team with credibility to compete. That includes putting out a lineup; best match-ups, bats, etc.

    • Bret Epic

DeJesus is starting against a lefty tonight.

  • Ben

I literally took the dog out to crap and walked back in to Cubs losing 2-0 wtf

  • Ben

    this is awful :(

  • Ol’CharlieBrown

Ok, Aramis just stole second base on us. That is simply unacceptable to me. Not only could he never steal a base while with the Cubs, but now we allow him to steal a base on us? Pretty sad. What’s truly pretty sad is that Soto had an absolutely ugly throw on a stolen base attempt yesterday and his throw on Aramis today was even more pathetic. He can’t seem to get the ball anywhere near second base.

    • Bret Epic

      Cubs vs. Brewers

      Starting time 7:05 PM CT

Time I grabbed my Red Stag and started chugging 7:20 PM CT

  • Cubs Style

    Maholm looks like complete garbage.

    • Bret Epic

He did look like complete rubbish during the 2nd half of last season, so it shouldn’t be all that surprising.

      • Cubs Style

He looks very hittable, no movement, bad velocity, nothing tricky or crafty either. I know we need to be optimistic and not expect much this year, but 65 wins is hard to swallow no matter what the circumstances are.

        • Ben

How are we going to win 65games?? Are we watching the same team? LOL Does Maholm deserve a 2nd start lol…..Why is Randy Wells in Iowa again?

          • Kyle

Randy Wells hasn’t exactly been tearing up Des Moines.

          • Cubs Style

Ha, true! At this point I don’t think Maholm could carry Wells’s jock. I am confused on why they are paying him 5 mill. Just because he’s a lefty??

            • Bret Epic

You can’t use magic spells to create a great time, sometimes it takes money and talent. It costs money a lot of times to buy talent, which it would seem Epstein doesn’t want to use in the exchange for it. Baseball players won’t accept bits of string as payment Theo.

            • Ben

The same reason we signed DeJesus for 5mill when we already have several useless OF’rs

              • Bret Epic

They signed him because they thought he was a “bargain” due to having a slightly above average career, but coming off a bad season.

                • Ryan

Also signed him to a decent contract given there was multiple teams interested and if he improves another trade bait canidate at the deadline? I know you couldn’t sign Lannan but who would you rather had Mahol or Lannan?

  • Ben

I keep thinking of the movie “Major League” when I watch them play, but without the 2nd half of the movie

    • Cubs Style

Yeah and our wild thing pitching today is throwing 85 and not 99 like Sheen.

  • Cubs Style

Love Caspers take on stealing signs. Very true…

  • daveyrosello

Cubs fee-vah, catch it! We’re better than the Astros! Usually! Eleventy!!!!
