Well, let’s try this again. The Cubs have lost three straight, and have been outscored in those games 20 to 6. Ouch.

The Cubs bust out the mostly right-handed lineup today against Mark Buehrle, with Reed Johnson leading off. Marlon Byrd and Geovany Soto loom at the bottom of the order. Maybe today’s the day they get rolling.

If the Cubs really want to see what they have with LaHair, they’re going to have to play him against lefties at some point…

    • CubFan Paul

I totally agree. LaHair has should no signs of being a liability against LHP (because he’s not getting the opportunity)

      • Drew

Thats the same shit Quade did last year that I thought we could put behind us. You have to at give LaHair an opportunity against LHP dont you? If you want to get Baker in the lineup, fine. Just dont sacrifice our biggest power threat in the process.

    • Amz

Hey, all Baker has to do is hit a grand slam today to keep up. NBD.

    • http://bleachernation.com RicoSanto

That is the exact thing I was thinking. Put Baker at 3B once in awhile let Lahair swing.
The decisions for this year is Theo is giving everybody a chance and then they will pick who will be part of a much Better team next year.Who will not be here next year,. Wood, Dempster,Byrd,Marmol,Baker, Dimwitt,Soto,Garza ?, and a few others to be named later.

      • Cubmig

so….this is all a “lab” experiment that’s going on this year?

  • Cubs Dude

Ok, now I am really starting to get really pissed. Why in the hell isn’t LaHair starting? Is a .360 avg and .448 obp not enough? HE IS THE 2nd BEST HITTER, and ONLY POWER THREAT currently. This makes no sense. Baker is a turd at first and an embarrasment for a team to have as the starting first baseman.

  • Puma0821

I wish I could go to the game. I would totally put up a Marlon-O-meter! Then everyone could cheer and celebrate everytime he got out and we had to drop his avg.

Btw, I was looking to see how many pitchers had as many hits as Byrd so far and come to find out that no Cubs pitcher has a hit yet. I know its only 10 games but still!

  • Cerambam

Yeah I agree also why sit him instead of Stewart if you have to Sit a lefty

  • Cubs Dude

Does anyone know if Sveum has been asked in an interview why LaHair isn’t playing everyday?? Are they still blaming his back? I am just completely lost on why is sitting so much…

  • gratefulled

Where the F*CK is Joe Mather!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I hadn’t expressed myself by my expletive and excessive use of exclamation marks, this is starting to piss me off.

    • Cubs Dude

Yeah, Mather needs to be in there too. I am blown away by this crap. They need people out there who can make shit happen, that have a little bit of upside. Baker, DeWitt, Byrd, and Reed Johnson are bench guys only. Not sure why Sveum doesn’t know that.

  • Cubs Dude

LaHair needs to be locked in at 4th everyday. Screw Soriano. Has Sori had an extra base hit yet? He’s too worried about hitting behind the runner.

  • Blitzenjohn

To answer most questions above, think ‘creating trade value’ as the answer. Patience, people.

    • Cubs Dude

I get the whole trade value thing. But in my opinion you don’t touch LaHair. Besides aren’t they probably going to trade LaHair when Rizzo is up? Why not let him show he can play everyday? Baker playing first base, makes me lose hope before the game has started. Maybe thats just me…

    • Cubmig

I think a long “sit-down” tv interview with Sveum is needed so as to try to understand why he’s doing what Q did last season. This musical chairs game being played with players that shouldn’t be playing is pissing everyone off. People are going to start holding Sveum’s feet to the fire—–no matter if it’s just 13 days into the season.

  • rcleven

Still a big hole in that 7 and 8 spot. If you don’t get any production out those spots where the runs going come from?

  • Jay Anderson Jr

Why in the hell does he keep putting Byrd in the damn lineup. Mather, Johnson or even keep Dejesus in, but bench Byrd please. Lahair is our best offensive weapon right now, he should play everyday, vs lefties or righties, until he proves he can’t. This is why Sveum is making some weird choices. Guy might be overthinking things.

    • Cubs Dude

I think the Cubs are desperate for Byrd to turn it around, so they can get anything for that stiff at all… He’s definitely not playing because he gives them the best chance to win.

      • die hard

agree….wonder what record would be if lineup had been
        Campana CF
        DeJesus 7th or 8th

        • DocPeterWimsey

        • Andrew

I know its you so i dont know why i ask but have you seen Dejesus’ obp, its like .450 or something why would you not have this man at the top of the lineup

          • Ferrets bueller

Exactly. They’d have two wins with that horrible Lineup if they’re lucky. Let’s put the two worst obps at the top, and the best last….

            • drew

Ferrets- you know its common knowledge that obp means nothing when Campana is being discussed. Have you seen him run?! He is FAST

  • morgan

didnt know they were going to sign dejesus to be a platoon player, start sitting byrd if your going to sit someone, our bench isnt good enough to be playing certain player aginst lefties

    • Cubs Dude

Apparently everyone is a platoon player besides Castro, Soriano, and Stewart.

  • Cheryl

At this rate they’ll never have a true test of whether LaHair can hack it every day. If they want t increase his trade value, then play him. Its a good way t destroy his confidence.

  • hansman1982

I wonder if the BN community wants LaHair to start against lefties.

    • Cubs Dude

I think LaHair should start against lefties….

    • Joe

      I don’t know, I can’t tell.

    • Kyle

He should only start against lefties if we aren’t trying to win the games.

If Jeff Baker isn’t the starting 1b against lefties, there’s no point to having him on the roster.

      • Shawon O’Meter

I disagree. Baker’s versatility is the reason he is on the roster which means he does not have to start at 1B vs. lefties exclusively. How about 3B for Stewart or 2B for Barney or RF for DeJesus or Reed Johnson if he is not already in the lineup for Byrd. You will never find out what you have in LaHair if you don’t let him play every day…simple.

  • Bric

After 11 games I’m again convinced we have a manager who know less about our players then we do. Yes, I said “we” because in my mind this is more our (The bleacher Nation’s) team than Epstein or Sveum.

Even if Byrd has 4 hits, a homer, and drives in 7 runs tonight I still know his time is up. Ditto for Soriano. And all the other teams know it too, which is why nobody wants them. The problem is the hiring process itself. The Cubs always try to steal away a player, coach, or manager who’s doing well in order to recreate scenario with us. The problem is for over a hundred years that hasn’t worked.

Like Walt Disney said, “You can’t have a laugh without a tear and you can’t smile until you’ve been frowning.” And, like Einstein said “Trying an experiment 100 times and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity” (or someting like that). I’m starting to think we should’ve just given Sandberg the job. At least he already knows what it’s like to lose in that uniform.

  • gratefulled

Juan Cruz just nailed down back-to-back saves against the D-bags.

    • Cubmig

Good for Juan Cruz. Contrary to what other people thought, I always liked the nasty pitches he could throw. Physically, he was a lightweight, but his stuff wasn’t. Good to hear he’s strutin’ his stuff.

  • Stu

Management must be showcasing players for trade purposes. If Byrd keeps this up, he will probably just be released by July.

  • http://i Cory

Wow again I honestly have trouble watching any game that Lahair sits I’ve had it with Baker at 1st put him in for Stewart I guess ill just watch to see Garza pitch and flip stations while were batting! Does anyone know if Lahair has had poor minor league #s against lhps I just don’t understand this philosophy. Has anyone seen Moneyball all I can think of is when Billy Bean is going nuts about who Art Howe puts in at 1st base “Idc about lefty righty Hatteburg gets on base more” Aren’t we playing moneyball?

    • Kyle

Yes, LaHair had poor splits against lefties in his minor league career. He’s never hit lefties well.

  • Cheryl

Its pretty clear that LaHair is not in their plans for the future. So we just have to accept the fact that he’s probably gone to another team sometime this year.

  • Richard Nose

Garza’s clearly too nasty for this home plate ump’s horse shit eye tonight.

    • baldtaxguy

Ump is just a foul turd, real lazy reaction.

  • Kevin

I don’t blame the manager I blame Theo and company playing these mind games with loyal fans. Theo, be a man and address these issues with your fan base.

    • Kyle

“Every season is an opportunity to win, and every opportunity to win is sacred.”

      Except he didn’t mean it.

  • Puma0821

At least Byrd got a hit!!!

  • Can’t think of a cool name

I didn’t get a chance to see the game. Any reason DeWitt pinch hit for Castro in the 9th? He’s one of our few bright spots (Castro not DeWitt)
