Today’s surprising call-up of Tony Campana certainly sounded like it was a precursor to another move. And the move might be a surprising one, though it’s been rumored here before.

The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo is reporting that that the Red Sox, who’ve been in the market for an outfielder after losing Jacoby Ellsbury for a hearty chunk of time (and Carl Crawford has been out as well, though he’s expected back soon), are closing in on a deal for Marlon Byrd.

No word yet on what the Cubs are hoping to get in return, but it might not be much more than salary relief at this point. Byrd is an exceptional defender in center, but he looks lost at the plate. He makes $6.5 million this year in the final year of his three-year contract with the Cubs. Maybe the Cubs can send along a couple million and pick up a low-level, mediocre prospect. Or maybe they’re picking up reliever Michael Bowden, whom the Red Sox designated for assignment last week.

I’ll update this post as more details become available.

Minor Update: If Byrd is dealt, no, I don’t expect Brett Jackson to take over in center field immediately. The Cubs are still likely going to want him to get more time at AAA. June/July still seems the likely time table. Until then, Campana could get some start, as well as guys like Mather, Johnson, and Sappelt.

UPDATE: Apparently Bruce Levine is saying (via Sahadev Sharma) that he thinks the deal gets done today, and the Cubs get a left-handed reliever and a minor leaguer.

Makes me wonder if the Cubs get anyone on the Bos 25 man roster what other move gets made to call up Wells

  • djriz

Okay, am I the only one to miss Byrd this inning? (top of 7th).

  • ferrets_bueller

I love the deal, actually getting something for Burnt Toast.

    However….
oh god, CF defense is gonna be ugly, unless they bring up Sappelt.

  • Cubs Dude

I’m glad he’s getting traded, but I would be shocked if the Cubs aren’t paying a large amount of his salary. I just hope it’s not like the Zambrano deal where they pay all of it…

  • william

Mayby there could be a way to get Drake britton and bowen that being nice

    • Neon

No way in hell does that ever happen

  • djriz

Is anyone thinking Big ‘Lu’ is holding the trade up? He’s trying to figure out how to give a reliever bone spurs.

If its anyone but Bowden coming back to Chicago there will be a bunch of people that will be surprised. I wonder if it is Bowden if the Cubs start him at AAA for a bit before calling him up. I wonder if Fox will talk about the posiable deal on their telecast.

  • BleacherBum

Makes sense, I traded him a couple of weeks ago in my video game. lol

  • nkniacc13

If the Cubs pay 5.5 million f Byrds deal I hope they get more than Bowden in this deal but if they don’t I won’t be mad. If they get 2 players and neither is Bowden and the Cubs eat 5.5 mil im going to be a bit disapointed

  • nkniacc13

According to Ken R. timing is an issue? Why is timing an issue?

    • djriz

maybe because the cubs want it done so they can use byrd’s spot for wells before sunday’s game.

  • Roughriider

Please, Please, Please don’t let the trade be for a PTBNL. They wouldn’t be able to work it out until sometime next March.

  • nkniacc13

u e made i sund like it was boson that the timing issues involved

I put on my girlfriends panties just so I could cream them. No but seriously, I’m excited to see Mather and Campana playing in Center.

  • nkniacc13

Interesting that the names Thomas, Miller and Bowden have all come up as far as the main player the Cubs could be getting in this deal

  • nkniacc13

Does anyone actually think this deal if gets done will inclued more than just 2 players?

  • brittney

I have always liked byrd but this year we should have sent him packing in ST. I’m hoping the RP is decent enough to dump camp. Dolis reminds me of a younger marmol. I think he will find the right grip to gain command. So I will totally be ok with keeping dolis. I am glad campana is finally up here. That lil guy gives a certain spark we were lacking. He is not the best player but he’s exciting to watch at times.
Today mather laid down the perfect bunt! I hope he gets regular starts.
Next up on the chopping block is soriano! Ill even fly up to chicago from florida to hold the door open so it doesn’t hit him on the @ss on the way out!
