Wow.

A bottom of the 9th, come-back, walk-off win? Does it get better? Yes. It does. It was against the Cardinals.

Matt Garza didn’t have his best stuff, but he certainly pitched well enough to win, especially against a potent Cardinals’ lineup. The Cubs didn’t have an extra base hit all night, and the bats mostly slumbered, but a walk by Bryan LaHair, a walk by Geovany Soto, and then a game-winning single by Joe Mather. Bam. Nicely done, boys.

Yet, somehow, the walk-off win might not have been the most shocking thing tonight…

Maybe this will be the luck we need

  • Kyle

Winning is fun. We were super due for one of these, if nothing else because we are trailing in the ninth so often.

It was definitely one worth smiling over.

I wish I could be more excited about this, but right now it feels like the least silver of linings after watching that mess of a third period the Blackhawks played. Oh well, tomorrow the playoff beard goes, then there’s more time to pay attention to a hopeful Cubs winning streak and a deep Bulls playoff run.

  • JustSwain

This game came down to the final strike. 2 outs, runners on second and third, and Mather battles out of an 0-2 count after taking the first two for strikes. My mood hasn’t turned from bad to good that quickly in a long time.

“Right now, I’d like to see better at-bats [by LaHair] against left-handers,” Sveum said. “He’s obviously swung the bat great against right-handed pitchers, but Spring Training through now, we’ve talked about some things to try to adjust his approach against left-handed pitching.”

Uhm… how the eff are you going to see him get better at-bats if you don’t ever give him a chance against lefties…

This is exactly the type of win, that can turn…..

oh who am I F**KING kidding….insert that thing about the blind squirrel finding a nut

    • ColoCubFan

      Good one!

  • Brent

Just watched the highlights on ESPN.com. will someone please make a sign that says if you are sitting on the left field wall and the other team hits a foul ball that our player may catch, Don’t Go For The Ball! Seriously. Thank goodness Soriano sucks otherwise I would have thought that bartman like moment would have cost us another game.

I was on the toilet watching the end of the game and I screamed….”Holy shit !!!” ..and then I chuckled.
    I’m funny sometimes…

I know I’m in the minority and I’m nitpicking, but….
LaHair’s at bat was the pivotal moment, no doubt. But praising it so much, to me, feels like praising an outfielder for making a diving catch even though he took a bad route.
The pitches LaHair fouled off were mostly balls, out of the strike zone. One was nearly off his shoe top. It wasn’t a “patient” at bat and it was great that he fouled that many off, but the at bat could’ve been over sooner.
Of course, maybe then Geo doesn’t walk on 4 pitches, but nevertheless…

Matt Garza now has a higher batting average than Marlon Byrd.

Sitting at kumas sipping a delicious three Floyds brew waiting on my Yob medium rare. Sun is shining, the metal is blaring and the cubs are playing the shirtbirds and wrigley f’n field tonight. And I’m taking in the game with my favorite sports writer. Tell me, does it get any better than this? Sweet home Chicago.

      Can’t wait, homey.

I will find you at the sports corner…I take it you will be wearing a bleacher nation t-shit ?

    • Shawon O’Meter

You are living the dream, my friend! It does not get much better than a burger at Kuma’s, a few tasty craft brews, metal and the Cubs. If only you could replace Brett with Marisa Miller, you would be the envy of all mankind. ;)
