I think I might shake Jeff Samardzija’s hand the next time I see him.

The Shark Attack was in full effect through seven innings tonight, and the Cubs got homer happy behind solo shots from Bryan LaHair (natch) and Ian Stewart (for realsies?), and a two-run shot from Geovany Soto (FOR REALSIES?). That’s just a lovely evening.

  • BubblesHargrave

he should be ashamed and so should dale

    • Njriv

Hey man take it easy, we get it, we all know you weren’t a fan of Marmol being out there, No need to post it a million times.

  • Zogie

The cubs’ bats remain hot tonight against the Braves, and Shark had another great outing. In the 8th, Marmol started off terrible as always, but came back big time to shut the door. Russell did a great job striking out 2 in the 9th and stranding Chipper on 2nd. DeJesus 0-3 1BB. He continues to get on base for the cubs and had a crucial run in the 7th. Campana 2-4 2B remains hot. If he continues to play like this he will be staying in the bigs for quite some time. Castro 2-4 RBI, K had another great game. Great defense and good hitting. LaHair 1-3 HR, BB, K keeps staying hot. He has not struck out as much either lately which is great to see. Stewart 1-3 HR, BB, K is starting to have more success. Earlier this year he could not catch a break, but now, those balls are falling. Johnson 0-3 HBP still has not got going. He is struggling, but he will always give you a great effort and will take a HBP anytime. Barney 1-4 has been ok, but has not looked great. Soto came through big tonight 2-4 HR. It was great to have a 4 run lead in the 9th. His bat has started to heat up and should start pulling up his average. Baker 0-1 and Cardenas 0-1. Cardenas looked good on his first AB of the season. It was a six pitch lineout. He had to fight off a few pitches as well. Great effort tonight! Lastly, my shout out goes to Geovany Soto. Great to see him have a big day.

    • Can’t think of a cool name

Looks like Soto changed his approach today. Only saw 9 pitches and crushed 3 of them. If this was done intentionally, great job.

      • MoneyBoy

Was at the game – Soto crushed the first one.  Saw post-game interview with BB – he mentioned Soto had a great batting practice session.  Not always representative of game action but it seems he did carry it over.

Was worried about Shark’s pitch count but it worked out okay.  7 innings, 2 walks, 5 hits, 7 K, 105 pitches.

Stewart not only had a mammoth HR but a very good W.   Same with DeJesus.

Gotta like the emotion Marmol showed in the 8th – hope it portends well for the near term.

  • Kyle

Marmol wasn’t good, but he wasn’t as bad as the results, either. He got squeezed pretty badly.

    • Jay Anderson Jr

Was thinking the same thing. He still scares the shot out of me.

    • Richard Nose

Glad to hear that. Was watching bull shit Gamecast and it looked like he was hammering the edges of the zone, not that he was intending to place anything anywhere. But a squeeze would explain it.

    • Hansman1982

After he walked those two his strike zone was the size of a dinner plate. After the first k the ump expanded it again. Good god was I chewing sveum out for leaving him in.

  • Jared

SAMARDZIJA…FTW!!! It feels good to win a few games! Marmol was part of it, and didn’t implode…Soto and Stewart are coming around…I got a feelin’…

    • hansman1982

Ok, I am clueless – what does FTW stand for?

      • Mrp

        FTW = For the win!

        • hansman1982

          ya, my versions started with a 4-letter F word…

        • Ogyu

          Free the whales!

  • Karen P

What a fun game. Nice to see the offense performing against decent teams. The lack of wind probably helped, too…

  • OkieCub

Cubs rocket into a TIE for last place!! I know I’m only setting myself up for heartbreak (again) but I really like the way the team is playing right now. Marmol and Volstad aside.

    • Kyle

Four games back of the second wild card

    • Brady

Tied with the Brewers! Hope the cubs keep winning and can get closer to the top!

  • JustSwain

Carlos Marmol is affecting my marital bliss. I actually got in an argument with my wife over my reaction to him coming into that game. That was a bonehead move by Sveum. Dale, in case you didn’t notice, Marmol pitches BETTER when you have someone warmed up. His problem isn’t confidence its control.

    • cubfan

Your an idiot. Everyone knows the cubs aren’t going to win the World Series this year so why not pitch Marmol and see if somehow he can get it together. Marmol has the most devastating slider in baseball when its right and that equals… prospects. Its pretty simple, he will have every opportunity in the world until the minute the trade deadline passes.

      • JustSwain

I don’t think the Cubs should stop pitching Marmol, I think the Cubs should stop pitching Marmol in close ballgames without backup in the bullpen. I also think he should be on a short leash. I also don’t appreciate being called an idiot, online or not. You’ll find a respectful attitude more likely to warrant positive reactions. Just as an aside I think what you meant to say was “You’re an idiot”. If your going to insult people for their intelligence I suggest learning how to spell. If Starlin Castro hadn’t been positioned perfectly, Marmol would have given away the lead on Freeman’s line shot up the middle. Considering that he walked the first two batters he faced, I doubt he was pitching into the teeth of his defense so that was just plain luck on his part.

        • Richard Nose

2 guys making grammatical errors while pointing out the other party’s grammatical errors. Adorable.

          • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

            I want to play!

When you start a sentence with a number, the number should be spelled out (i.e., “2” becomes “Two”).

            • Richard Nose

I don’t play the game, I just watch it. Isn’t there a rule about spelling small numbers and going with numerical for larger numbers? (Two, Seven, 398). This is intriguing. I will definitely wait for message board approval before I put this in2 play.

              • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Yes, that’s a rule, too (unless the numbers are in a series, in which case you pick one way and stay consistent). Generally, one through ten are written, 11 and above are numerals. But sometimes that changes if you’re talking about baseball stats.

                • JustSwain

Gee, thanks for standing up for the guy who says “Your an idiot” with his first statement. Way to make me feel dumb.

        • http://none millhah

You corrected his “your” then you put “your” in the very next sentence! lol 😛

          • JustSwain

I just want to point out that I didn’t insult anyone with my post, just stood up for myself when I was called an idiot, but thanks all for making me feel foolish. You guys are fucking jerks.

            • Ogyu

You have learned an important lesson, young Skywalker…

            • MaxM1908

Oh, JustSwain, lighten up. The guy was out of line in calling you an idiot. No one disputes that. No one here is being a jerk to you, they’re teasing you because you made a big deal about Cubfan’s grammar and then made the same mistake yourself (immediately after pointing out the correct grammar!). Hopefully, you recognize the hilarity of the situation. I laughed when I read your post, and I was glad somebody else pointed out your misstep. It’s a dangerous game being a grammar Nazi. If you play the game, you should have grammar above reproach.

      • JustSwain

Also when you pull the pin on a grenade and drop it down your pants, the fact that it turns out to be a dud doesn’t mean it wasn’t a boneheaded move. Just a thought.

        • ty

Agree that Dale and co. are gambling with psyche of Smardj. Garza, and Dempster who are pitching their hearts out. Pitch Marmol when we are clearly out of it for awhile–we are damn lucky to win this game . I really think Dale is saying f*** the fans and our starters–I will do what I want too. Where are the hard assed chicago reporters to address this–do not exist–just kissing up to Theo. Journalism sells out in this town daily!

  • Jeremy

Shark has been pitching outstanding. 4th win of the year for him. Good all around game and everyone contributed today. What a catch by Campana at the end, I don’t even know how he saw the ball with all that fog.

    • JustSwain

Campana made a good catch, but comparing it to Bourn’s catch against Soto earlier in the game was rather telling. They both started in the same place, but Bourn caught the ball 40 feet to the left of where Camapana caught his, just to the right of the 368 sign. With Campana we know its not speed that’s the issue. If he could develop his outfield instincts he could track down balls with the best of them. Bourn probably is the best of them, so its not a fair comparison, I’m just saying.

      • Andrew

I must have missed the part where he compared him to Bourn?

        • Richard Nose

          Everything’s foggy.

      • Drew

The problem there is, at 26, one doesn’t really develop instincts; for the most part, you either have them or you don’t, and Campana does not.

  • EB

Great win for the cubbies! I’ll be headed up to Wrigley tmrrw bright and early for tmrrw night’s game and the day game on Wednesday! Hope I can see them win 3 games in a row for the 1st time this season tmrrw!

    Go Cubs Go!!!

  • http://justinjabs.com/blog Justin Jabs

And an almost homer by Reed!

  • rcleven

Great job by Shark tonight. Pitching has been the name of the game for the Cubs for now. With the warmer weather bats seem a little better. Braves look like the best team we have faced so far. Let’s see if we can keep those Brave bat quiet for a couple more days.

  • Bret Epic

It was an overall great game, first of the year for me and first ever for my girlfriend. Definitely a team effort today.

    • http://Cubbie4life.weebly.com Tonycampanathebasethief

Great game! I got a ball from reed Johnson in Lf and then at the end of the game went to cubs dugout and saw Adrian Cardenas! I said hey that was ur first MLB at bat right? He replied smiling yup… I then gave him my pen and shirt and he signed it! He then used my same pen to sign a bunch of other kids hats and stuff. I then said next time that hit will go through and that he hopefully wins ROY and has a nice career and thank you!

      • Bret Epic

i was out in LF too. Plaid shirt and spiked black hair. I was next to the people yelling the whole game.

        • http://Cubbie4life.weebly.com Tonycampanathebasethief

Down low or by the annoying guy above swearing?

        • http://Cubbie4life.weebly.com Tonycampanathebasethief

I was wearing a maroon sweater blonde hair I’m only 14

          • Bret Epic

Just to his left. I was with my short blonde haired girlfriend.

  • Craig

I’m going to enjoy whooping up on you in the Draftstreet contest for saying “for realsies”…TWICE! Best of luck to you gentlemen 😉

If Samardjia keeps pitching like this, they need to re-sign Garza and they will have a great
1-2, add a good free agent pitcher and with Rizzo, Jackson, LaHair and Castro, Cubs could possibly compete even next year.

    • Richard Nose

      Hammels, Garza, Shark…yum.

  • John (ibcnu2222)

Sold shots? Who did they sell them to? The fans in the bleachers, I suppose. Just bustin your chops.

  • John (ibcnu2222)

I have a feeling that Marmol will regain set-up man form. Just leave him there though. Dolis looks like he can be a decent closer.

  • Shawn

The Cubs are playing much better baseball over the last couple of weeks. They aren’t making the mistakes that were costing them ball games in the first couple of weeks. I believe Dale Sveum should implement the Willie Mays Hayes rule with Darwin Barney. Anytime he swings, at a pitcher’s pitch, on the first pitch he should do pushups.

  • MaxM1908

Just got back from the game. I have to say, being in the stands, the Marmol 8th was classic. He walked the first batter. Boos came. He walked the second batter, people on the first base line (where I was) started chanting, “Marmol sucks! Marmol sucks!” I was so tipsy, I was just laughing and saying, “Marmol came into the game with a 2-run lead, he’s going to leave with us two runs behind.” Then, there was the great catch in the infield, and all of a sudden the crowd got behind him. Each strike he threw was like we had just scored a run. I think he was feeding off the energy…negative and otherwise. I can laugh about it now since everything worked out O.k. I just hope it’s a sign of things to come: Everyone doubts him, and then he delivers. It would be great to have him pitch all the time like he did against McCann and Uggla.

    • JustSwain

Just remember he pitched a 1-2-3 save the day before he blew the game against Cinci. I don’t know if Marmol is showing signs of life yet, or just being as wildly unpredictable from start to start as he is from pitch to pitch.

  • czechxican

    Shark- for real
    Campana- almost real
    Marmol- once real

  • xPJHx07

This team could go places in a few years if they get some more quality pitchers. They also have to figure out the LaHair, Rizzo problemo. This year, best case scenario, i could actually see them getting the #2 wild card. They just need a decent #5 pitcher. Give Volstad May, and if he can’t turn it around..call up wood

  • Brady

I would still like to see more runs driven in on singles and extra base hits instead of home runs. I will take home runs but they are so inconsistent in Wrigley because of the wind, for me its nicer to see them drove in normally. Again I will take a win anyday though!

    • FromFenwayPahk

      Lahair is SUCH a problem.

    • OlderStyle

I’d like to see men on base when the homers are hit. too many solo shots.

  • Steve

You need to impliment random drug testing to participate in these discussions. You have some CRACKED OUT people on here.

Cubs for the 2nd Wild Card!!!! YEAH!!! yeah…..

  • die hard

Proves Cubs dont need Soriano….is he on way out to DH starved team?…possibly

  • MichCubFan

I would leave Dolis and Russell to share the closer spot based on matchups….and when marmol figures things out then i would use him as the stopper…with runners on base in the late innings.

The modern bullpen is not the most efficient way to run a bullpen, and i have a feeling that theo and crew might agree with that.

  • CubbieBlue

I am sad I had to miss another W. Working 2nd shift sucks. At least I can keep up with the action on my phone. Love that LaHair is hitting homers at a better pace than Pena did last year and Lee in the last couple of years.
