Well, Chris Volstad. We’re still waiting for your first really good start as a Cub, and today would be a very, VERY good time for it.

The Cubs’ bullpen is taxed, but it’ll get a little help in the form of Casey Coleman, who was called up in favor of Carlos Marmol, who went to the DL with a strained  hamstring. The only other guys unavailable in the pen today are Kerry Wood and Rafael Dolis. Still, I guarantee Sveum rides Volstad pretty hard.

It’s a national game on Fox today, which doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be able to see it. Hopefully you’re not blacked out.

Why not call up Maine? Better yet, why was Maine ever sent down?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Maine will be up at some point, for sure. I kinda want to see Coleman out of the pen. With the slider he added, and a little more juice on the fastball, I still think he could potentially be a decent reliever and surprise some folks.

I agree; he’s changed his motion a little bit too; kinda curls inwards towards 3rd base; disguising the ball a little longer; would be nice if he or michael bowden figure it out to be an asset for 2013 plus. he looked OK on MILB.tv for the iowa games.
i saw bowden pitch at waubonsie valley; shows how far and hard MLB is as the kid had pure smoke in HS and has gone from future SP prospect to best hope of middle innings RP.

    Go Cubs.
Volstad, we need innings, so bring your spring training command.
(but wouldn’t mind seeing ya hit Braun again. his tantrum last night was fun. he’s a big baby). As a matter of fact, hit him on the first pitch to keep your pitch count low.

On that note, Brett, hear anything about why Weeks isn’t playing. Did he get injured by turning INTO that pitch that hit him. Cheater!

I’ve been largely out of commission this morning, so I haven’t done a ton of reading around, but I’d be shocked if Weeks sitting is a coincidence.

    • Angie

He isn’t playing due to being hit in the wrist..kind of a blessing in disguise

Coleman is on his way to Milwaukee, but he won’t be there at game time.  I imagine Coleman got the call because he is stretched out as a starter.  if the Cubs need a long man, he can do the job.  Maine is pretty much a one inning guy.

I’m also not sure how fresh Maine is himself.  It does no good to reinforce a tired Chicago bullpen with a tired reliever from Iowa.  I’m sure the Cubs took that into consideration as well.

I’d not be surprised if the Brewers retaliated for the Cubs hitting Weeks and Braun last night.  I mean, clearly Braun thought it was the most deliberate and offensive HBP in baseball history.  A few fastballs right at Castro, DeJesus, or LaHair would not surprise me in the least.

      You’re right about Braun, Luke.

If the Brewers had better advance scouts, they would know Castillo couldn’t hit ANYTHING he aimed at.

Great! The old lady, a couger, is coming to cook my friend and I bacon and eggs. She knows damn well that I work graveyard and work tonite. She should be grillin’ me a t-bone along with a baked potato as it is my evening right now. She’s cruzin’ for her 2nd black eye. She got the 1st after Castillo’s performence last nite.

Yea, domestic abuse is such a delightful subject for humor…

        Salute O

How cute. Axford’s wife went into labor last nite. Nice axcuse for your 1st blown save in 49 opportunities.

The biggest weakness in this team is the bullpen. We have a group of guys that are very inconsistent for the most part. Kerry Wood’s struggles and Marmol’s continued ineffictiveness has made it hard. Hoping by the end of year a couple guys can step up and make our bullpen better

Two defeats in 12 hours. Enough-to bed and then George Lopez concert tonight–need to smile for an hour.

  • Jeff

At least Volstad is consistent…..consistently bad!

  • calicubsfan007

Volstad is really on a very, very tight leash. He needs to either do well today or he could be demoted. We haven’t had the best luck with Marcum, which makes me worried. And last night kind of made me wonder why very few Cubs hitters have patience at the plate, hopefully they’ll figure that out in time. I like the starting lineup though.

  • Terry

I agree about Volstad, think it is time to send him down and call up Travis Wood. At least he pitched well for one game but I guess it wouldnt matter much if you cant hit and your bullpen sucks.
