Twinkies. Cockroaches. Koyie Hill in Chicago.

Very few things could survive a nuclear apocalypse, but Koyie Hill is clearly one of them. Today, thanks to a rash of catcher injuries, the Cubs reacquired long-time back-up catcher Koyie Hill from the Reds for cash. Hill signed a minor league deal with the Cardinals in the Spring, but bounced to the Reds’ minor leagues where he waited for a chance.

Presumably, he was waiting for Jim Hendry to call, but, no, the love affair between Hill and the Cubs was not Jim Hendry-centric! Apparently, it’s just a Cubs thing.

So back Hill comes, and he’ll join the Cubs in time for tonight’s game. I can barely breathe.

(Small, serious part: the Cubs were desperate, and understandably so. Hill knows a few of the Cubs’ pitchers, and can at least call and catch a good game. So what if he’s currently hitting .195/.250/.341 at AA…)

    Nope

  • http://justinjabs.com/blog Justin Jabs

Alright, place your bets on how long this lasts.

    Over/under 10 days

  • magilljl

    Dislike. A lot.

  • Andrew

Is he coming straight to Chicago or is this AAA depth while guys are injured? I’d rather see Marmol or Wells behind the dish than Hill.

  • Glenallen Hill’s One Home Run

Thank GOD! Koyie Hill is far more synonymous to the Cubs than that Kerry fellow, and he’s back to take his rightful place as King Cub.

  • cubs1967

if team Theo is such a freakin’ genius; why do they keep bringing back the JH leftovers:
    baker
    dewitt
    reed
    rod lopez
    and now koyie “bleepin” hill………….WTF??

hmmm………here’s hopin the 2.25M they just saved from Woody saying goodbye goes towards the FA pool this offseason for some real talent; no the JH leftovers.

    damn!

    • DocPeterWimsey

And Theo should be playing…. who, exactly?  Smarter geniuses than Theo have failed to unlock the secrets of time travel, and that’s about what you’d need to get last year’s roster into a good roster for 2012.  (Doctor Who turned down the position on the grounds that he’s a cricket fan, I’m told…..)

      • ColoCubFan

        Damn Limey!

      • cubs1967

the easter bunny or santa claus………..anyone but koyie hill; really you are asking that question; there was a whole class of FA and we got maholm and dejesus.

please……….somewhere tell me where the 42.5M went from the time tommyboy took over….oh i know; 10M went to the defeat obama campaign.

        • Drew7

If you’re gonna bash the FA’s that they signed, why would you pick the 2 performing the best as an example?

          • cubs1967

            let’s see……
‘cuz dejesus is on pace for a 1.6 WAR and maholm’s WAR is ZERO so he projects to a zero WAR at year-end.
those to me are not good FA; just becuz they are performing the best for the Cubs; too many fans like you have low expectations.
            they both suck.
dejesus would be a 4th OF on any good team at best and maholm is a 5th starter on a good team.

i expect better from the boy genius and his posse.
and i don’t care that 2012 was a lost year; this is theo’s team; not JH leftovers so it goes on theo’s resume.
            last place.
            bad.
            expect better.
we as cubs fans deserve better.
            that’s why.

            • calicubsfan007

Where is your patience? These guys are stop gaps, and they are doing the job that is required of them. Either way, this year would have been “lost”. Either we Hendry’d our way through overpriced free agents and either have the same result as last year or we screw our future even more by giving away our prospects, or we rebuild the right way and save our future. Rome wasnt built in a day.

            • Njriv

Well we do have low expectations because we all no the Cubs were not going to compete for the world series this year, that is what we call rebuilding. Signing to many free agents got us in this mess in the first place. We all know you really wont see Theo’s impact on the team for the next couple of years, since he’s building through the draft. Where have you been?

              • calicubsfan007

I really think that cubs1967 is actually Jim Hendry, or at the very least Hendry’s bff. I have yet to see him say anything negative about Hendry, and have yet to see him pay Theo any complement what-so-ever.

  • http://justinjabs.com/blog Justin Jabs

Hey look at that, Hill’s in the starting lineup. Johnson CF, Barney 2B, Castro SS, LaHair 1B, Soriano LF, Baker RF, Mather 3B, Hill C, Dempster P

    • Kory Schulte

That is like the worst lineup I’ve ever seen

      • Andrew

Straight to the starting lineup? Yuck. I would’ve preferred him as depth in the minors and would’ve been okay with him as temporary depth at the Major League level. But, if he gets more starts than Lalli while Soto, Clevenger, and Castillo are out I will be disappointed. When you have 3 catchers go down you have to do something – I get that. And a catcher who is familiar with a good number of your pitchers is a logical way to go. But give the rookie a chance, Dale. Let Hill show him the ropes by talking to him about pitchers between innings.

        • ColoCubFan

Dale’s probably afraid Lalli will get hurt if he starts him. As bad as Hill is, he seems to be pretty indestructable.

        • Brady

No that lineup could be worse. Imagine if Volstad was pitching today but Garza was batting and making all his throws to first base.

  • ColoCubFan

I know it sounds weird, but after Soto got hurt, the first thought from my brain was “I wonder where Koyie Hill ended up?”
I’m afraid that after 40+ years of being a Cubs fan that my brain has turned to mush!!!

  • TrueblueCubbie

I’m not upset about this, at all.

    • MichiganGoat

It the grand scheme of things this nothing serious… Just a filler till we get healthy, but then you realize it’s Koyie Bleeping Hill and it brings back the last few seasons. But yeah nothing to get overly worried about but it is fun to overreact sometimes.

      • calicubsfan007

Agreed, its fun to bitch about Hill, even though it really doesnt hurt us in the future.

      • Joe

Yeah, you nailed it here. Same reaction. “Goddammit! Aw, hell, I guess so.”

  • King Jeff

That lineup is awful. At least this will only last until Clevenger is healthy.

    • MichiganGoat

Or will it….. We’ve said this before and he still existed.

      • King Jeff

Now you are starting to get me worried. If Hill rubs off on Dempster and gives him last years taint, then I am going to be pissed.

  • notcubbiewubbie

i have given jed and theo carte blanche on anything they want to do; this however is going too far. coye hill sucked yesterday sucks today and will suck tomorrow . can’t hit average at best behind the plate another automatic out. but i’ll bet he is a butt kisser. i smell dempster.

  • MichiganGoat

Whaaaat??? I honestly believe Hill has some serious blackmail over the Cubs. Now watch us go on a winning streak- VIVA LA HILL

  • MichiganGoat

I’m actually shocked he had even a minor league, but I guess if you can actually catch and call a game you will have a long career. Even if you can’t hit the ball off a tee.

  • ferrets_bueller

FIRE THE FRONT OFFICE!! BURN DOWN WRIGLEY!!! RIOT IN THE STREETS OF CHICAGO!!!

    • Brady

CALL IN SICK! THROW A PARADE! STEAL A FERARRI! Sorry for some reason I had to comment on the name. Never felt the need before but it just felt right.

      • Blitzenjohn

        Bueller?… Bueller?… Bueller?…

    • MichiganGoat

MOAR Yeah the FO is horrible

  • Patrick

Tomorrow is a day game after a night game and you would probably use your second catcher anyway and Hill has never (to my knowledge) caught Maholm but he has caught Dempster plenty so why not start him tonight in desperate times?

(Not a run-on sentence as much as it appears to be)

  • KyleNovak

Anybody try giving Pudge Rodriguez a call? Have him “un-retire” and get him right in the lineup. Sure beats the alternatives. . . (I kid. Well. . . . maybe not entirely)

  • ColoCubFan

I kinda would’ve liked to see a pic of Barney in catcher’s gear.

  • Carew

We are so roughed up behind the plate right now. I hope they dont give up on Lalli this early. But Hill is a great catcher, just not at all a good hitter.

Yikes ididnt realize castillo got hurt, disregard the Lalli statement…man we’re worse than i thought

  • notcubbiewubbie

please dont mention pudge again had andy mc FAIL not lied to us and said he was under salary constraints and we sign pudge in 2003 we already would have won a world series or two. thanks again andy MC FAIL

    • TrueblueCubbie

      lolwut?

  • Christian

Definitely Pudge would be a better option. aNot sure if he would come back from retirement to be a backup. Pudge retired because no team would give him a fair chance to get to 3000 hits. I think he had enough left over, more than Jim Thome and some others that were given a chance just to get to 3000. But I guess he is form PR. I bet he could ease put up the same numbers as some catchers that are regulars today.

  • http://bleachernation Allen

Its not that bad of a signing. Hill always seems to have a winning record behind the plate when he starts so everybody calm down. Why isnt soto on the dl yet? We have 4 catchers on the roster right now and 2 cant play

  • Jimmy james

The sky is falling…doom and gloom…how will we ever stay in first place now!

  • JulioZuleta

All jokes aside, it was a pretty damn good move. He calls a great game and knows Dempster well. Yeah, he’ll probably go 0-4 with 3 Ks, but if he calls a good game or two in the next few days, this worked out. I’d rather have Hill over Lalli. Also, Soto is hitting .150, I bet Hill could match that if he gets hot. He’s only going to be here a few days until one of Clevenger, Castillo, Soto is ready to go.

  • Blitzenjohn

OK, folks, I know I’m repeating myself here (if you follow on Twitter, you’ve seen this), but KHill IS a defensive upgrade. Let’s not overlook the value of this fact for the P staff and the overall D of the team. Shut up already and Play Ball! GoCubsGo!

  • Kevin

I live outside the Central Time Zone and will not get the Fox feed to see the game tonight between the Cubs and the White Sox. I also subscribe to get the Major League Baseball package through my local cable company but unfortunately that game is blacked out. Does anyone know how I can see the Cubs game tonight?

  • Cheryl

It coud have been worse (trying to think how), but at least he knows the pitchers. Otherwise its one crazy lineup. Sveum may have had no choice but I would have liked to have seen Lalli.

  • Ryan

Our offense just got even more pathetic.

  • MI6

Where is Bobby Scales when we need him?

    • calicubsfan007

Oy vey, don’t get me started…

  • Jim L

Where is Hank White when you need him?

    • calicubsfan007

      How about Henry Blanco? LOL
