So, all those changes at the top of the order that Dale Sveum talked about? Not happening. The lineup looks the same as ever as the Cubs try to put the brakes on their skid in Houston. In fact, other than Matt Garza batting 9th, it’s a carbon copy of yesterday’s lineup. Maybe Dale just forgot to make out a new card.

Adrian Cardenas is getting another shot at second base, which I’m not sure is performance-related, or injury-related. Darwin Barney did pinch hit yesterday, and he looked fine.

  • EQ76

man, if we can just sweep the Astros then…. ah nevermind..

  • Cee-Dee-Vee

Glad to see Cardenas is getting another start.

Brett, I really liked the idea that you brought up earlier of having Camapana first, Castro second, and DeJesus third. With DeJesus’ good eye (not so good yesterday), LaHair would almost always be coming up to the plate with runners on.

    • Brady

Im meh on Cardenas so far. He hasnt looked very good at the plate so far, I hope that improves but as it stands currently, I’d rather have Barney’s glove at 2nd.

      • Drew7

Its hard to feel anything about Cardenas when he has all of like 18PA’s

        • DocPeterWimsey

harumph: a real baseball man (or woman or hominoid of any persuasion) doesn’t need that many PAs to judge a player!  After all, what decent player ever began his career without at least a dozen clutch hits in his first 18 PAs?

          • Brady

I am not saying he wont come through eventually, I am saying though that he doesnt look comfortable at the thing he was brought up to do. For now I am leaning towards the man with the better glove as our defense has been what is keeping us close in games.

  • Young Eezy

I’ll be there. I aspire to be the drunkest fan there and if I fail at that, well maybe I’ll get on the big screen and moon the camera.

We should win this series against the ‘Stros, if not sweep them. Like Cardenas starting and Garza pitching. Any word on any Garza trade rumors? We seem to only hear Dempster stuff right now.

  • mark

Norris is RHP, Barney is RH, Cardenas is LH. QED.

  • die hard

Why is Soriano starting? Why not shore up the defense by putting anyone else in left and let Soriano come off the bench in late innings?

    • Njriv

Because that would only benefit the team.

  • CEO

I know this out of left field, but does anyone have an update on Reggie Golden?

    • Brett

Haven’t heard one yet, which is both a bummer and unnerving. Knee injuries can be scary.

    • Iceman

Golden has a torn ACL – out for the season.

  • lou brock lives

Cubs should purchase the Peoria Chiefs & move them into Wrigley Field. Then build a new park at Arlington Park Racetrack. Then the Ricketts won’t have to kiss any Democratic ass – Chicago Mayor & aldermen any more. They’ll still get decent revenue from the old park & can market the team saying- : ” see your future players at the old yard – or come to the new park & enjoy the wait in comfort & luxury.”

  • cubs1967

is the astros 3rd baseman charles or chris? charles was the marlins star catcher for a while i thought (also kane county cougar star).

    • Brett

Haha. That’s why I had “Charles” on the brain. My bust.

  • Njriv

John Gaub was just DFA by the Rays today.

  • #1lahairfan

I loved Gaub for some strange reason. Whenever they announce his name it gives me hope. I was there at his first game. He got a strikeout facing his first batter.

  • CastrotoBarneytoLaHair

Based on this lineup the last two days, Dale is letting Barney know, “it’s all your fault!”

  • Robert

BLEH! Does anyone have any links they can send me to this game… If so, Please send them to me at
this is just short term until i muster up enough money for MLB.TV

    • TWC

Only $15 for Gameday Audio!  Pat Hughes is the best.

  • ERR

I like Campana. I think he would be better suited batting leadoff with Dejesus hitting second.

  • Skipper Ellis

This is just absolutely horrible. This Cubs team.. My sons little league team could beat them! WHO AND THE HELL GIVES UP A MOTHERFUCKING HOMERUN TO JASON CASTRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????? 3-0 Astros. well, lucky number now stands at 7. my tv is OFF. Goodnight all of my Frustrated Cubbie fans. IM OUT.

  • Njriv

I saw this coming, due to the lack of offense, the Cubs starting pitchers are putting too much pressure on themselves to be perfect.

  • Cubs Dude

Koyie Hill is just an embarrassment. You can’t tell me there isn’t some other journey man catcher who can at least hold their own for a couple weeks. This is ridiculous..

    • DocPeterWimsey

Challenge accepted!  There are not any other journeymen catchers who can at least hold their own over the next couple of weeks available.  Well, that was easy…..

Seriously, catcher is by far the most difficult position to fill, and when you have 3 of them go down, well, you are boned.

      • Cheryl

Was there anyway the cubs could have brought up another catcher from the minors on a temporary basis due to injuries without having to put him on the 40 man roster? Hill isn’t doing the team any good.

        • hansman1982

ehh, for all the hatred on Koyie Hill we are presently on our #4 catcher. In this circumstance, you could do MUCH worse than Hill…at least he knows the staff

  • ryan

Anyone know the top players in the 2013 draft, cause it appears we are getting a top 3 pick

  • Goatbuster

When you watch cubs games you yell at the tv, when you yell at the tv your kids go to grandmas, when your kids go to grandmas she takes them to the circus, when your kids go to the circus they tell the clowns your were yelling, when the clowns hear this they go to your house, when the clowns come to your house it’s the 4th inning and Houston is up by seven, when Houston is up by seven you choke the circus clowns….. Don’t choke circus clowns.

    • ry34

U are a genious! Totally love this, well played!

  • Scheherazade’s Toy

Can’t say I would have ever expected to see a nod to Kate Bush lyrics on the main page of a Cubs blog.

    Well done, sir.

  • Andoalex

Anybody else hear the most pessimistic view of Castro ever by the announcers? Castro is a 7 hitter in the perfect lineup? Maybe a lineup with Ruth, Mays, and Cobb.

    • Njriv

I heard that also, I doubt a 7th hitter would be hitting over .300, I was like no way, but then he struck out on a terrible pitch and turned off the TV to go face first in a bucket of chocolate ice cream to help sooth the pain.

      • Cheryl

Has Castro ever had a good sense of the strike zone? Pitchers know he’ll swing at most anything.

  • ry34

ah, another absolutely wonderful effort tonight guys! never have seen a major league baseball team mail it in after 40 odd games but this team sure has. nothing like seeing your best pitcher get absolutely lit up by the astros of all teams! nothing short of a pathetic joke continuing to be told by the 2012 cubs, oh but wait we all expected this kind of play from them. my bad!

  • Cheryl

Another question. Why pinch hit for LaHair? I’m not understanding this. Couldnt there have been someone else to pinch hit for? This has happened twice now. What does it do to LaHair’s confidence as the no. 4 hitter?

    • Drew7

When the score is 8-0 with 1 out in the 8th, nobody takes it personally.

Lalli needs AB’s and only catches and plays 1B. Im sure LaHair understands

      • Cheryl

Ok. I understand what you’re reasoning is. Thanks.

  • supergeek24

I love my cubs but this is a joke bring up lake rizzo and bjax shake this team up for god sakes !

    • Jeremy

Rizzo I can understand wanting to bring up but why would we bring up BJax considering he has almost 60K’s already this year and is hitting a meager .235? Bringing up Lake wouldn’t be a good idea either. He still needs polish and time to develop.

      • Drew7

“but why would we bring up BJax considering he has almost 60K’s already this year and is hitting a meager .235? ”

        – He also has an .866 OPS in almost 400 total PA’s in AAA. I’m not saying hes ready, but hes a lot closer than his BA would indicate.

  • Kevin

Bug Selig should fine the cubs for not fielding a major league ball club. Cub fans save your money and boycott going to Wrigley Field. Rickett’s take note, your plan is worse than previous owners.

  • Skipper Ellis

HEY! it’s another meaningless 9th inning ralley. Now, because of this, Sweum wi gonna think he is a mastermind and our offense is back on track. I’d rather us gotten shut out than this little 9th inning crap we play.

    • ry34

yeah someone maybe a coach might want to remind these loafs that major league baseball is a 9 inning game not just show up in the 9th inning!

  • Njriv

Why dont the Cubs approach the other 8 innings like they do in the 9th?

    • Jimmy james

Probably bc the other team pitchers don’t approach 1-8. Like the ninth in a blowout

  • HoustonTransplant

What a craptastic affair this game was. It’s even worse when you witness the massive amounts of suck in person. Very little “positive” to take away from this game tonight.

  • Kevin

Cubs are saving money and still asking for money from the public taxpayers. Hey Tom, this is not fun, good decision hiring Theo and preventing him from spening money to field an enjoyable team to watch. You and your family are very greedy. So many people out of work and it still costs a fortune to watch the equalivent of a minor league team. Maybe your family got rich by screwing people. I love the Cubs, but come on, let’s be real.

  • Zogie

Here is my line-up for tomorrow. Campana, DeJesus, Sori, LaHair, Castro, Stewart, Barney/Cardenas, Hill/Lalli. I have my reasons. Campana has amazing speed and he has a .309/.356 AVE/OBP. DeJesus is a patient hitter that would allow Campana to steal second. He also owns a .276/.360 AVE/OBP. I can not stand seeing Castro bat at the top of the line-up. His ABs are killing me. Sori comes in at #3 because he is a fastball hitter, and he will get a few fastballs with LaHair behind him. Also, Sori has a .333/.391 RISP AVE/OBP. LaHair has been great. OPS-1.059 keeps him at #4. I’m placing Castro at #5 because he can be an aggressive hitter from that spot, and it keeps the lefties split. Castro can hack away at the first few pitches and use his high AVE. to bring in the leftovers. Then, the last 3 spots can be anyone. I have Stewart, Barney, and Hill, but Mather/Baker can play 3rd. Cardenas can sub for Barney, and Hill and Lalli can rotate behind the plate. Something has to change. Lastly, I am sorry I did not post an Advanced Box Score today. I just could not take it today. Terrible baseball
