Paul Maholm’s start was much better than his stat line made it look (and the line is still pretty good). He had gone six scoreless when he started the 7th, but an Alfonso Soriano misplay, a bad call at second, and a tight zone later, he’d allowed two runners on base and was pulled from the game. Casey Coleman allowed both to score, and Maholm was credited with both runs. By the time the bullpen was done, the game was tied.
If it weren’t for some assistance by the best defense in baseball, the Cubs probably wouldn’t have pulled this one out. And, what the what? Marmol with the win?
