Enhanced Box Score: Tigers 3, Cubs 4 – June 12, 2012

That’s a two-game winning streak for you calculator-less folks at home.

Paul Maholm’s start was much better than his stat line made it look (and the line is still pretty good). He had gone six scoreless when he started the 7th, but an Alfonso Soriano misplay, a bad call at second, and a tight zone later, he’d allowed two runners on base and was pulled from the game. Casey Coleman allowed both to score, and Maholm was credited with both runs. By the time the bullpen was done, the game was tied.

If it weren’t for some assistance by the best defense in baseball, the Cubs probably wouldn’t have pulled this one out. And, what the what? Marmol with the win?

Three things went right for us in the end: Marmol didn’t implode this time, Peralta threw the ball all over the place in the 9th, and Camp was able to close. I missed the bad call at second, what happened there?

    1. art

high throw to 2B, Ump called the runner safe.

  2. Mike S

Marmol got the win! Now’s the time to trade him! His stock is as high as it’s been all year!! haha

    1. GoldFinch

Mike–Too many exclamation points can get you in deep doodoo!

    2. calicubsfan007

Hahahahha, we can send Marmol to a team for a bag of BP balls now, instead of just one.

      1. GoldFinch

        LOL!

        1. calicubsfan007

Is that a legit lol or an excuse to use the lol that annoys some people?

          1. MichiganGoat

            The latter

            1. calicubsfan007

One more thing about this Michigan, how do you know that GoldFinch is Joe and Betternews? I promise I won’t bug you about it anymore.

              1. MichiganGoat

Without going into details we absolutely know who this is. Trust us it is him.

          2. GoldFinch

I think it’s legit! I have tears rolling down my cheeks!(there I go with exclamation points again, sorry bro) Did I say bro? I take that back. Might get nabbed for racism. Did I print racism? I don’t know what the hell to do anymore! I think I’ll watch the GoldFinches out in the Maple tree.(did I say Maple? That has a color. Oh my God, I am a racist that uses exclamation points!)

            1. calicubsfan007

Ummmm okay. I am glad I made you laugh. Maybe you should get some sleep, beginning to sound a tad paranoid. I think bro is a safe word, just fyi. Yeah, get some sleep hombre.

              1. GoldFinch

                Not paranoid, just pissed!

                1. Spencer

what are you pissed about bro

                  1. calicubsfan007

@Spencer: Look up the convo on the Tigers/Cubs pregame page. You’ll get the answers there.

                  2. GoldFinch

I can’t use exclamation points or LOL anymore! I just did it again! Oh my goosh, I am doing that to much! I think I’ll start using the foul language Brett allows on the site!

                    1. calicubsfan007

Dude, breathe. Look, everything will work itself out. Trust me. It will be fine. You still have people commenting to your posts here and I am not planning on stopping my comments to you anytime soon.

FYI – his act doesn’t go away regardless of what is done. We as a community have tried ignoring him, teaching him, banning him…nothing works, he is an insufferable troll and I would recommend treating him as such

                    3. MichiganGoat

It was just advice, you do see how your overreacting? We are all in Brett’s house and should listen to any advice he gives you. He’s given you a second chance and you’re throwing a tantrum. If you don’t like the advice there are hundreds of other Cubs sites that will embrace your tone.

                    4. calicubsfan007

                      @hansman: Thanks for the advice.

                    5. MichiganGoat

It’s very sound advice, he will only cause you problems.

                    6. hansman1982

@cali – no problem…those of us that were around for his calculation of career batting averages will tangle with him because of the feces slinging he put us through in January/February

                2. calicubsfan007

Well, I am very sorry that you are angry. If you have done nothing wrong, then there’s really no need for the anger. People can take the anger as you proving that they were right. I don’t know if you are the guy that has caused probs before, and I am not going to pretend that I do know. That’s why I am not taking sides on this one. We are all Cubs fans. That’s all I care about.

                  1. GoldFinch

                    Not angry, just pissed!(disgusted)

                    1. hansman1982

Generally when something has disgusted me, I no longer associate myself with that something…

                    2. calicubsfan007

Well, then I am sorry that you are pissed. Eat some candy or drink some beer or play a violent video game, that can make people less pissed about things.

            2. Katie

Gold Finch I’ve never seen you on here before but you seem to know a lot about what goes on around here. How strange. I’m off to make my special pot pies. Good night all!

              1. hansman1982

He is simply not “validating” our comments about him being The Troll Formerly Known As Betternews/Joe

                1. MichiganGoat

He disappears when faced with the truth, he’ll be gone for a few hours until we go to sleep. Then return to trolling.

                  1. hansman1982

nooo Goat, he is taking the high road here – can’t you see we are wrong he is right

              2. GoldFinch

I’ll take a pot pie! Hope you’re doing well. A friend knows you and asked me to give best wishes.

                  2. GoldFinch

                    Who is BetterNews?

                    1. hansman1982

too late – you have been called BetterNews 800 times previously without response…

                      BUSTED!!! Oh SNAP!!!

                    2. MichiganGoat

Back to denial, of course it you. Apologize for the reasons you got banned and take Brett’s advice and we can move on.

                  3. MaxM1908

I can’t believe this is starting up again. It was soooo pleasant on here in his absence. Amazing that he even shows his “face” on here after the BoysofSpring debacle.

                    1. MichiganGoat

                2. hansman1982

yes Katie, I admit, I am friends with GoldFinch and told him to tell you to tell me to tell your sister – HI!!!

@hansman: I am doing almost 7 things at once right now and this is pushing my brain into meltdown! (=

                  2. Katie

Well bless his heart! I can’t imagine Gold Finch and I have any friends in common.

  3. florida Al

new hitting coach?? whad i miss??

    1. calicubsfan007

Jaramillo got canned earlier today. Jay Rowson replaced him.

  4. rcleven

Cubs took 7 walks tonight. Free bases = Runners on base.4 of the walks lead to runs.
    Great job by Maholm.
    Bad job from ump’s.

    1. calicubsfan007

What happened there? I was only able to catch the box score for every inning for this game. I missed the umps’ bad calls. What were they?

      1. whiteflag

Peralta threw the ball high to santiago*, which caused him to jump to get it. They called him off the bag, but replay showed he had a toe still on when he initially caught the ball. Same with the throw to first, fielder has pulled off the bag a bit but maintained contact.

        1. calicubsfan007

Those were charged to Peralta fielding errors.

      2. rcleven

Sorri Throw to Barney had runner nailed in 7th.Ump called him safe.
Fatman pulled off bag on Castro ground ball in 8th. Replay showed Fatman was on the bag when he caught the ball. Maholm getting squeezed in 7th. Pitch track showed it should have been called third strike. Could go on and on.

        1. calicubsfan007

Oh, so not really the umps best night? This is why I am a big fan of replay.

          1. whiteflag

Definitely not…i think i might be with Mr. Valentine on this one. The umpires need help in getting the calls right.

            1. calicubsfan007

Yep, replay might be the best thing to happen to baseball

              1. Cooper R

How would instantly replay work? Hault the game and the umpires go in the club house to review video? I guess they could do it like the NHL ( each ump gets a beeper and each play is reviewed by a group of officials that could simply call down and reverse a play). Either way, I sure hope it doesn’t happen with balls and strikes.

          2. cubchymyst

The funny part of it is Jim Leyland one of the managers that does not want instant replay.

  5. Brady

Not to criticize the EBS but if it weren’t for bad calls by the umps in the 7th, Detroit wouldnt have had those runs. They can’t be marked up as errors though I wish they could be.

  6. calicubsfan007

Can someone please tell me what the bad calls were that caused the other team to score some runs? Nevermind, I got my answer. Thanks.

  7. Luke D

    7 walks for us.
    2 walks for the Tigers.
Yes, having more runners on base leads to more runners left on base (that bit of advice was free, if you want more, buy me a drink), but ultimately the more runners you can get on via walks will equate to more scoring chances. This offense needs scoring chances, desperately.

Darwin Barney with a walk, that’s a miracle all to itself. We deserved to win this game.

    Go Thunder.

  8. Leroy K.

    2 in a row…that hasn’t happened since…

    1. calicubsfan007

Running out of fingers to count the days between the last time and now.

          Thats good, hahahaha (=

          1. hansman1982

abacus’es are good for counting as well

  9. Nathan

I would like to see Kirk moved up to Double A and then Jensen and Burke moved to High A. Also if Jokisch is ready move him to Triple A. Its time to see if these guys can perform at Higher levels. Other guys I would like to see move up are Batista, Cabrera and Rhoderick to Triple A. Zych, Lorick, and Loosen to Double A (Whitenack when ready). And Rosario to Daytona. I hope all of these guys at least get a taste of a higher level this year

  10. Spencer

    Special thanks to the umpires.

  11. cincycubfan

I’m driving from Cincy tomorrow to the game so lets hope they can make it three in a row!

  12. MaxM1908

Anyone visited any Tigers’ blogs tonight to see how much they’re whining about the Umps? That eighth probably shouldn’t have gone our way, but hey, it was nice to see the safe sign go up when I’m used to seeing the “out” in those situations.

    1. Spencer

yeah, those things tend to even out over the course of a season. went our way tonight, but we just as easily could be complaining about it in the future. im still against instant replay, though.

      1. GoldFinch

Yes, I’m against instant replay too. The game already takes long enough. But some of the call by the ump’s need to called out!

      2. MaxM1908

My problem with instant replay is where does it lead? Do we have video review of balls and strikes? I probably get more angry about that than I do close calls on the bag. And, over the course of a game, I think the shifting zone probably has more effect on the outcome than a single call on a bag.

        1. Spencer

i totally agree about an inconsistent strike zone having more of an impact, but I think taking the human element out of calling balls and strikes too radically changes the game of baseball. The most I would support is fair/foul calls on all balls hit – not just home runs. I think anything beyond that changes the game way too much.

          1. hansman1982

If they ever do replay or have the booth call balls and strikes you can kiss most no-hitters and ALL perfect games goodbye

            1. calicubsfan007

I would support some instant replay on close plays on the bases.

        2. GoldFinch

Well, there are”sensors” that could be placed to “predetermine” the strike zone. However, a question would come up as to how accurate the sensors are! Not BS, I am an engineering student.

          1. calicubsfan007

            What school?

            1. GoldFinch

College? Or H.S.. I graduated from Holy Cross in River Grove.

              1. calicubsfan007

College. If you expect to be a good engineer, you have to attend a great college that is known for engineering. And I have no idea where the hell River Grove is. (=

                1. GoldFinch

River Grove, Il is in the Chicago suburbs.

                  1. calicubsfan007

                    Near Park Ridge?

                    1. GoldFinch

Thanks calicub! again I appreciate you standing by me! Yes I know Park Ridge very well. Morton Grove is where I spent a lot of time growing up. Well I shouldn’t say that I was raised on Rockwell Ave if you have heard of it. North ave and Rockwell.

                    2. calicubsfan007

Vaguely heard of Rockwell Ave. Had family live in Park Ridge for a while. Again, no problem hombre. (=

                2. GoldFinch

Can’t agree with that one. Good engineers come out of small systems.

              2. MaxM1908

If you’re currently an engineering student, you must have graduated from Holy Cross around 2009?

                1. whiteflag

Didn’t holy cross close in 2004?

                  1. GoldFinch

                    Yep!

                    1. whiteflag

I was thinking of the right school then. Well congrats on getting into engineering school! That isn’t easy to do at any age.

                  2. GoldFinch

Success rate is very slim. I’m posting a 3.6 GPA with the help of my wife and friends!

                    1. calicubsfan007

Good for you! Engineering isn’t easy to learn!

                2. GoldFinch

                  Nope! Guess again.

          2. Luke

There already are cameras and other devices that monitor the strike zone.  The data is collectively referred to PitchFX and is, with some patience, publicly available.  Here, for instance:  http://pitchfx.texasleaguers.com/

Right now that data is used by sabermetricians, front office types, and MLB (to evaluate umpires).

            1. GoldFinch

Yes, but cameras are NOT very accurate.

              1. Brady

I agree, sometimes i see the placement on pitch FX and am like WHAT?! The pitch fx seems to be adjusted to the commentators view points.

            2. GoldFinch

Think fiber optics Luke. Precise, and fast (And yes, I am fiber optic certified).

  13. Jeff

Late night discussion: Cubs should sign Vlad Guerrero, put him in right field and move DeJesus to center. That way we can have bad knees on both corners ;)

  14. Serious Cubs Fan

If brett jackson and vitters just dont show they can put up better numbers up in Iowa this year could we technically keep them down there all of this year and bring them up next year at this time so we get another additional year of control of him when hes in his prime? I know would never happen but we are goin to suck this year anyways and hes not putting up big numbers, and we will probably suck next year too. so why don’t we just completely go for the future. Rizzo is a completely different case because he has consistently just killed the ball, and he cant do anymore to prove himself major league ready. But Brett jackson and vitters on the other hand could needs to improve his plate discipline and approach at the plate and really lower that strikeout rate before he get here. dont have his arbitration clock start by bringing him up and learning here. Plus if I hear someone tell me the cubs need to see what they have in him your crazy. What difference is it going to make? Who else are you going to call up? No one other OF in the minors are close to being called up, and the cubs arent going to get a big time free agent OF this winter. Sorry people Hamilton isn’t going to happen and andre either just got signed to an extension. Michael bourn will be 30, too old for cubs, Granderson will resign with the yankees, shane victorino to old and doesn’t make sense, Doubt we will get Melky Cabrera (too expensive after this season), nick swisher maybe short term contract (I’d like to sign him but he’ll go to a contending team who will pay him big$). We may get a decent FA starting pitcher but I doubt we get Grienke or Hamels just too expensive and doesn’t make sense because both will be starting to leave there prime when we get competitive again. Essentially we are going to suck for a while and there is no point in signing high priced free agents to do a patch job like we did in 07. So why not just hold the young guys down till they truly are crushing the ball like Rizzo and then bring them up. Its a smart financial decision

    1. calicubsfan007

@serious: good logic. Nature and time have made Cubs fans impatient. They will demand Theo to make a big signing, even if it doesn’t make sense. I totally agree with you though. I don’t think the FO even likes Vitters, I have heard that they are shopping for a young, ML ready 3bman.

  15. Leroy K

I missed all the excitement. What happened in the later part of the game that has the Tigers fans upset?

    1. calicubsfan007

@ leroy: You missed a lot on the past two Cubs posts.

      1. Leroy K

guess i need to do some reading and catch up! That’s alright, I’m bored at work anyway lol!

    2. calicubsfan007

Prince went to get a throw, had his foot still on the bag, but ump said he pulled off. Tigers fans pissed about that.

  16. Dante hicks

Can we send Casey Coleman to Boise? Or is that too advanced?

    1. calicubsfan007

Maybe… He sucked today. He thinks he can be a starter. Please….

      1. GoldFinch

No way is he starting material. I rember last year. His dad told him to move over on the pitching rubber a couple of inches. That gimmick worked for a few innings and that was it.

  17. EricR

Is this the most walks we’ve taken in a game all year?

    1. calicubsfan007

At least somewhere near the top…

  18. die hard

Castro collar? Sans his hitting guru?

  19. die hard

Set Campana free and hes got 100 SB EZ

    1. Njriv

I think the Cubs have been pretty much doing that, he just has to get on base.
