The Cubs shoved it in the White Sox’s face again, though in a more subtle way than last night. The Cubs took advantage of some White Sox mistakes and some lucky bounces to score their two runs, and the pitching made sure that was enough. Travis Wood was solid in his six innings of work, and the bullpen didn’t allow a run.
And, hey, the Cubs finally won a one-run game!

Great game by DeJesus. The go ahead AB was quite impressive. He may not be a All-Star but he gives great professional AB (which this team sorely lacks)
We won a 1 run game!!! That makes us 2-1000 on the year now right!!??
Oh yeah! How could I have forgotten?
Haha. Yeah, gross exaggeration aside, any win against the fighting Hawk Harrelson’s (or any other team for that matter) is a plus.
He disgusts me. I don’t know how anyone could ever find him appealing to listen to during a broadcast.
He’s the worst, no doubt.
never heard his voice befor. If I’m forced to watch his broadcast. It’s on mute. Lol
I was switching back and forth between the Cubs and game 4 for a while. Hawk made it easy for me to decide to stick to basketball. God I hate that guy. When he says “good guys”, referring to the White Sox, knowing that most people watching the game are probably Cubs fans (WGN=Cubs), it’s just frustratingly annoying.
I love Steve Stone. I refuse to believe for a second that he doesn’t hate Hawk too.
Do you have Comcast? The Cubs’ broadcast was on too.
If the Sox are losing sometimes I watch just to hear him react. You should have heard him dwell on the bad Rios check swing call. If a bad call goes against the Sox, that’s all he talks about the rest of the game. He just absolutely makes a mockery of the game.
A mockery? I could float a lot better words around but I will be civil.
Thank you Rick. As Stone fan myself, I HATE people trashing Steve. I’m certain he’d much rather be at Wrigley doing his thing.
Yeah I loved listening to Stone, I remember he got canned for being right 2nd guessing one of our managers over pitch count maybe. Someone refresh my memory, I remember thinking he was exactly right whatever it was.
Advanced Box Score
DeJesus 2-4 2RBI 1 3B, 2K. DeJesus had a great day out of the lead-off spot and played some good defense as always. Castro 1-4 CS still needs to learn how to hit with runners on third base. He continues to swing at bad pitches when these opportunities come. He has done a better job with his ABs this year when runners are not in scoring position, but he is far from a complete hitter. His defense has also improved greatly from last season. LaHair 0-3 1K is having a hard time with breaking balls down and in. He chased about 3 tonight. He did have a few good swings tonight though. Soriano 0-3 BB. Wow a walk. Clevenger 0-4 2K had a rough night as well. Barney 0-3 but his defense is amazing. Valbuena 0-3 but has had some big ABs since being called up. I was glad to see he was given a chance. Soto 0-3 hit a few balls hard, but the results were not there. Campana 2-3 did a good job getting on base, but Peavy kept him silent on the bases. Johnson 0-1. Wood had a decent outing and got out of a lot of tough jams. The bullpen did just enough to keep the lead. Marmol even shut the door and the cubs won their first series in weeks. My shout out goes to DeJesus for his clutch single to give the cubs the lead early.
What are all those “H” and “W” in the box score?
I didn’t even want to point out that “W.” Is that some kind of upside down M?
It’s proper name is inverted mark prior perfect mechanics
On that note, has anyone noticed what Prior is doing in AAA for the Red Sox? Low 90s fastball and the curve is as good as ever. 19 k’s in just 8 innings. I know we have every reason to not like him, but I can’t help but root for him.
Nope! Who cares?
Probably the guy asking…
I’m rooting for him. Not sure why I shouldn’t be…
Because he tried trashing the Cubs organization as I remember!
I would trash the guy that ruined my arm too. Go Mark!!!!
Prior ruined his own arm just as Kerry Wood did! Those are the facts whether you want to believe them or not.
Yeah Dusty over pitching him and Woody in 03 had absolutely nothing to do with what happened. We did him a disservice by pushing them both so hard that year. Hopefully the Nationals are looking at that year as a model why you dont push young pitchers.
Bah! Prior and Wood were out to prove something no matter the cost! Wood got lucky and he’s living the big life. Prior is trying to get it at a late age. Those are the facts!
Okay I know where this headed, so I’ll make this final point and move on. The coaching staff chooses when a pitcher pitchers and for how long. Most young players want to prove something and want to compete, few pitchers want to be pulled or have a start skipped, but a responsible does what’s right for the long term. Dusty and Larry allowed those two to pitch there arms right off. I can’t think of a single person in baseball that has ever said that we handled either of them the right way or that Prior forced them to over use him. The managers must protect their assets and ensure long term succes. Dusty and company saw a chance to win big and pitched those two beyond repair. Come on you have to understand this, or are you again not going to admit your thinking is flawed and argue against facts. Anyway good night good sir.
You really should publish a book.
You can call it, “The BetterFacts: How Sh*t Went Down in My Universe” by Joe Goldfinch
?
Ha
I would totally buy that book just to burn it.
Glad to hear that
Chris Archer will make his major league debut tomorrow. He is starting against Washington. Time to see exactly what the Cubs gave up for Garza.
Live in DC going to the game tom night. I can report back on how he looked if people are interested.
Yay! In your face Black Sux, Gawk, and Stone! So this is what it feels like to win a one run game? I kinda like it! (;
Woody did great, the bullpen didnt suck and Marmol got a save! Whoa, what was that chill coming from? Oh, I see, hell’s freezing over!
No way dude. There’s only one woody… And Travis is not he. Too soon, too soon.
See my comment below.
I think it’s O>K> to call Travis “Woody” Here we go!
You just love to start arguements don’t you? Okay attention everybody: getting in to a discussion with Mr. BetterNews/Joe/GoldFinch is a hopeless cause, ignore him completely don’t engage these comments of his it will only frustrate you. Sigh, and here I was begining to think you we’re doing better.
What are you talking about? you have something against me, don’t you? (by the way, there is no “e” in arguments , teach)
Stay classy BetterNews it’s so nice to have you back.
Who is BetterNews? I’m just a little bird that can hear things. I’m a GoldFinch.
Michigan: That “stay classy” line makes me think of Ron Burgundy. “You stay classy San Diego.” Love that movie (=.
Hardtop: Sorry. Force of habit to call a Cubs pitcher Woody when he has the last name “Wood” .
can we say “t-woody” ?
Hey we know what those symbols mean. The other teams get lots of them against us.
I’m not sure, but they look like some type of strange alien markings.
Congrats to T. Wood. Hopefully that is the first of many, many more wins for the Cubs.
Yeah cubbies!!! Suck it white sux!!
Knocked the sux out of first place.
130 pitches for Peavy! In two weeks he’ll be on the DL or forced to miss a start. Didn
I was shocked they let him go that long too.’
PS. His mannerisms were very Zambrano-esque all night. I really don’t like Peavy. Also, anyone else noticed that ever since Peavy had his little hissy fit with AJ in the Cubs dugout, Flowers has been catching a lot of his games? I’ve always figured there was some tension between the two. I remember when Peavy first rejected the trade to Chicago, AJ questioned why someone would want to stay with a last place team, basically questioning if he was a winner.
I could see them butting heads, seeing as they are both complete and total d-bags.
Wood is coming along and getting more confident each time out. He and the pen stayed on task.
Aside from the game which he gave up the 4 HRs, Wood has had a descent year.
I don’t normally pray when I watch the Cubs but when I do Carlos Marmol is pitching.
I just turned that into a meme, couldn’t resist. I tweeted the link to Brett
NG, that is very very clever.
Some of you BN members really step up with quality. I feel like I’m in good company here.
Great game, too bad I can’t say that about the Midwest All-Star game today. The West All-Stars got crushed 18-2. Overall it was an enjoyable day, the Cougars have a nice park, I got to meet and got some autographs by some really nice players like DeVoss and Syndergaard, and I had really nice seats. Thanks again Tim and Brett!
Peavy and white sox couldn’tt wait to play Cubs.careful for what you wish for boyzzzzz.
Good game Wood! Volstad is hating you.(Your’re right Brett)
I have to admit, I watch 2 innings on WGN because I love Stoney. My respect for him outweighs the disdain I have for ‘the other guy.’ If Brenly leaves for any reason, Stone should return to Wrigley.
How many Advil does hawk need to take after tonight?
And ,of course, it isn’t a Marmol outing without a walk and a strikeout.
And we knocked the Sox out of first. What a perfect day!
This is what you hope for when an opposing player is on your fantasy team, 1er, cg but the cubs still win.
Hansman: Peavy technically helped your fantasy team out tonight right?
Scored him 38 points. I’d say that was a best case scenario for a Cubs fan starting a pitcher against the Cubs. Good for you Hansman. We call that a win-win where I come from.
which was more than Travis Wood, incidentally.
Thanks for letting me know. Internet down at the hisself and my phone doesnt have the password so I’m flying blind for a few days
You got me by a couple dozen right now Hamels got you 40+ tonight.
Didn’t get to watch tonights game but i got the gyst from the highlights (including some ear bleeding from Hawk, ug even in 30 sec intervals my doc says I should only take you with hard alcohol.) Good to see our pitching helping our offense recover after the pounding we gave last night (we all knew today was gonna be low scoring for the Cubs just glad we kept them down as well).
Damn heat won. I bate them almost as much as the white sud.
#1lahairfan: I am with ya with the heat hating. Hate those guys.
Its also Great to have CSN and WGN, so you can change the channel to the white sox announcers when the cubs do something good
White sux hate
Campana got picked off? Thats a first….
Replay showed he was safe.
He was safe, indeed.
Team starting to jell. DeJesus should have been bunted home from 3rd with 0 out.
Travis Wood looks like a pitcher. Marmol looks like a scared kid out there.
Was at the game. 6th row, behind home plate. Many photos taken. Hi Fives with 23 year old hot chics. And, even Soriano leaned over the wall from the batter’s box to say hi to a young kid. Good night, indeed.
I believed you until you said you got high gives from Hott chicks
Yeah not at the cell. Should read “53 year old toothless fat chicks”
I think we need to collectively agree on what to call Travis Wood. I just don’t like that I’ve heard Woody already, Woody is and should always be Kerry. I suggest using TWood, just trying to protect one of the best loved Cub in past decade plus. Kerry will always be Woody, or maybe I’m drunk and walking down memory lane.
Yep. I’m there witchoo, but I’m definitely drunk.
Michigan: That was my fault. Force of habit to call a guy named “wood” woody. Travie maybe? Or is that too much similar to the gym class heroes guy?
LOL!!!!
Careful there, remember we are supposed to dislike TWood because we gave up Sean Marshall for him, Sappelt, and Torryes knowing that Marshall is the second coming of Bruce Sutter and Lee Smith. *Disclaimer* My statement is pure sarcasm if anyone thought I was serious about what I said about Marshall.
T Wood is fine. If he’s known for his fastball you might call him “the burner”.
i think the “burner” has already been taken by Soto! Did I say that?
