Quantcast

According to multiple eye witness accounts, Chicago Cubs prospect Anthony Rizzo was just pulled in the third inning of today’s Iowa Cubs game, under circumstances that made it pretty clear it was an amicable pull.

In other words, he’s on his way to Chicago.

The Cubs start a three game set with the Mets tonight at Wrigley Field, and it would be surprising if he started for the Cubs on the same day that he’d started a game at Iowa, but it’s conceivable he could be brought up and put on the bench tonight. It’s far more likely, though, that the official move will come tomorrow, and Rizzo will be starting at first base for the Cubs against Dillon Gee tomorrow night.

When the move is official, I’ll have more thoughts, including strong words of caution about the hype train.

UPDATE: Paul Sullivan says a source confirmed that Rizzo’s debut will indeed come tomorrow night. To which I say …. YES!!! I’ll be in the right field bleachers, waiting to catch Rizzo’s first homer as a Cub.

  • cjdubbya

It’s time for the Rizzteria to begin. No expectations, right?

    • thejackal…

poor kid what if he goes 0-5 tomorrow? i think were putting to much expectations on the kid. even though look at castros first game lol. i wish him the best of luck even if he does real good the cubs will still be the same ole cubs . however least it will give us hope for future

      • Bric

No worries, bro. If he has an 0′fer all of the stats anaylists here will jump up and remind us that Sandberg was 2 for 37 or something like that in his first year here.

Most of the posters are pretty easy to predict. When they like you, numbers don’t matter. When they don’t, they pick whatever number they can find to bash you. And right now Rizzo’s currently very much on the “likes” list by all. Numbers.

        • Drew7

I say there is a 76% chance someone took a leak in your Cherios this morning…:)

          • Bric

It was Life cereal, but now that you mention it, the milk was a little warm and yellowish- I guess that was it.
Or maybe it’s just the hurricane I’m sitting in the middle of right now- well, tropical storm. Big difference.

        • TWC

Bric, baby, whatsamatta??  You seem grumpier than usual, kid.  If you read all the comments here (and, really, I don’t know how anyone could do that to themselves), you’ll see that there are plenty of folks here who remain extremely skeptical about Rizzo.

          • Bric

Sorry, I am a little grumpy, bro. We’ve had 6 1/2 feet of water fall since Saturday and something like 217 car accidents since then. And the real sh*t isn’t supposed to get here until Thursday or Friday. But the upside is your cable channel’s getting a lot play!

            • TWC

My cable channel and I are laughing all the way to the bank at your misery.

Drag for you though, pal.  I’ve got a bunch of those silica gel packs left over from some recent shipped packages.  Those are pretty good for drying things out.  Want me to send ‘em to you?

              • Bric

Right now i’m building a raft out of empty Old Style cans. I plan on using rosin bags as flotation devices and my five year plan is to sail to Valdosta. But I think I might be able to fashion those packs into beer coosies so- what the hell, ship ‘em down. Go Cubs!

BTW, if anyone has an infield rake they could part with, I’m still working on a rudder.

    Brett:

Would you say you’re off to see the Rizzard? The WONDERFUL Rizzard of Oz? I mean the nicknames are endless! That’s what I’m most excited about!

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

That’s another good one right there.

  • http://bleachernation.com #1lahairfan

Congrats and hope they one day play on the cubs.

  • http://cubsrumorsandnews.blogspot.com/ HotStoveCubbies

    Brett,

So I am hearing that Jeff Baker could be traded to the Nationals soon. Have you heard anything on this? Could it be the corresponding move for Rizzo Tuesday?

The Nationals are looking for a replacement for Mark DeRosa so it makes a ton of sense to me.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I’ve not heard anything like that (but I haven’t heard anything on the roster move at all). Losing Baker was one of my first thoughts, though.

    • Carew

Oh man, please please please be true! Id feel bad for the Nats but my god Baker wouldnt be a cub anymore

  • Cub Gone Wild

DFA Reed Johnson he is the first one on my list to get cut. Well okay he is tied with about 5 others as first to get cut.

    • http://cubsrumorsandnews.blogspot.com/ HotStoveCubbies

Yeah, I am for getting rid of a lot of this team. I think just like Baker; Reed Johnson has some value. The Marlins had interest in him recently. I like Reed Johnson but he is taking time from others that are the future.

  • RY34

Awesome news and even better, we can only hope baker is given a one way ticket out of chicago!!

  • Can’t think of a cool name

In my best George Wendt voice: Rizzo vs the Cardinals? Rizzo 100 Cardinals 1 only because Rizzo felt sorry for them.

  • http://bleachernation.com #1lahairfan

Package baker it makes sense to me.

  • Cub Gone Wild

Baker is tied with Johnson, Mather, Cardenas and most of the bullpen.

    • http://cubsrumorsandnews.blogspot.com/ HotStoveCubbies

If we did that then we may get a bucket of ball and a Jose Macis Signed Jersey which would be sweet!!!

    • RY34

totally agree with you on baker and mather; johnson at least gets a big hit every now and then and Cardenas, who knows about him, no major opportunity given yet

  • Vladimir

Can I say it? This is vonderful vonderful. yes.

  • Steve

MISERY ( RIZZO) IS ALIVE, MISERY ( RIZZO) IS ALIVE! Oh, This whole house is going to be full of romance, OOOH, I AM GOING TO PUT ON MY LIBERACE RECORDS!

  • http://www.viewfromthebleachers.com Norm

Why wouldn’t people want Cardenas on the team?
He’s 24 and has had success at every level of the minors. He’s not good on defense anywhere, but he’s a guy that could be an above average bat.

    • Drew7

      Im with you there, Norm.

What I will never understand is why, in a season like this one, Cardenas cant get consistant PT. Even when Stewart went down, they opt to go with Valbuena, who carries a robust .283 career OBP.

  • Cub Gone Wild

My God if someone actually traded for Baker and Johnson I would have to throw my skivvies in the garbage can. Come on Natties pull the tigger for Baker PLEASE!!!!!!!!! If the Marlins would take Johnson I would have to break out a bottle of Champagne. That would be considered a major sports celebratory event!!! Anybody seen The Good Heart? It’s a sleeper on Netflix…

  • Patrick G

I live in NY and never get to see any Cubs games, unless on MLBN. It’s just my luck that they will be broadcasted on the Mets channel when Rizzo debuts. Super stoked!

  • Cub Gone Wild

Come on Theo earn that pay check brother… have Jed call em back and say SOLD… Let Tom go down to the clubhouse and let them know that he has been the undercover boss this week and give them a check for cab fare and tickets to 6 Flags or some nice family outing. Thanks for participating boys now get out of my locker room.

  • Cub Gone Wild

Cardenas doesn’t get to play. He either was caught doing something really bad with DeJesus’s wife or he isn’t any good. For some reason he just doesn’t have a role on this team. I suspect he got bored and called DeJesus’s wife and got caught. LOL…. He was passed over in favor of ValleyBuenaVista

  • Cub Gone Wild

I just knew Byrd was up to something… He was prolly seeing like 5 baseballs at once in the batters box this year. Those illegal substances will get ya every time. I he would have only swung at the ball in the middle he might have gotten lucky once or twice.

    • http://cubsrumorsandnews.blogspot.com/ HotStoveCubbies

Well he had the “PED trainer” so you knew it was going to happen eventually. I want to know when was the test taken because it if was this year then it should be an ad why not to take PEDs because just look at his numbers.

  • Steve

I remember how excited I was when Castro made his debut….look how crappy that turned out.

All you Debbie Downers can suck it.

Rizzo goes 3-4 with 2 rbi and 2 runs scored.

  • Stu

Enjoy the overinflated ticket prices in the bleachers and the $5 beers.

    Go Cubs

    • Ted

      $5 beers? If only.

    • Steve

      They are $7.25

      • TWC

Really?  Only $7.25?  Jeez… at AT&T Park they’re $8.75 for the crappy beer, $10.50 for the good stuff.

        • King Jeff

They are 9 bucks at Marlins Park, until they run out of everything but Heineken, then it goes up to 12.

          • Shawon O’Meter

I was just at Petco Park and paid $10 for a 22oz cup of wonderful. Hell, I’d pay $20 a pop for good beer, but one thing Wrigley does not offer is quality beer selections. There were individual kiosks at Petco for Ballast Point, Karl Strauss, Widmer, and Kona and I was able to partake in some tasty Alaskan Brewery IPA. Oh, did I mention they also had a kiosk featuring Belgian beers too? This is a park that respects beer drinkers. :)

            • hardtop

old style is good beer. if you disagree, please send all your authentic cubs merchandise to the address below:

          • TWC

Anyone who pays $12 for Heineken is an ass.  Unless they’re paying $12 per keg, and then only if they’re using those kegs to drown cats in.

            • Katie

I wish I could “like” comments here.

    • Vladimir

How obvious of a troll post is this? I mean does this guy/gal think he/she is fooling anyone? I’m sorry that you seem to be so jealous of the Cubs that you just can’t ignore them and watch your own team. Must really hurt when so many people go out to see a team like the Cubs, where your team has to fucking BRIBE fans just to come out and watching a contending team. lol sad.

      • Drew7

        His last name is Stone…

  • Leroy K.

I know we’ve talked about this but I can’t find the answer and I’m fighting someone on ESPN, How much time spent in the majors keeps a player under team control for that extra year?

  • IACub

Good job with easing the hype…but I hope you do catch his first HR!

  • Doug Dascenzo

Yo, Rizzo be in the hizzle! Fo shizzle my nizzle!

  • MightyBear

If I’m the Cubs, I don’t start Rizzo right away. I let him sit, get his sea legs, maybe have him pinch hit and then start him in a couple of games. Let the kid get acclimated before you throw him in the deep end.

    • dob2812

He’s been in the majors before. He’s been a professional baseball player for a few years now. There’s no need to have him sit.

      Let him play.

  • Jim L.

I was at the Cubs store in Woodfield yesterday and they were preparing Rizzo jerseys with # 41 stitched on the back with his name.

  • Cub Gone Wild

I don’t think he will get to sit for couple of games. Unfortunately I think there would be a 39,000 fan riot at Wrigley if he didn’t get to play tomorrow night.

  • Ivy Walls

    • Leroy K.

      bad request. What is it?

  • Jason “Thundermug”

I thought Rizzo is going to wear 44 that is what he was wearing and is on MLB.com and authentic Jersey websites (not 41)

    • Jim L.

That could be possible, I was walking out of the store and passed by the machine they were using and it looked like a 41 but I didn’t take a second look so it is possible.
