With every new piece of information about Ryan Dempster’s lat injury – an injury so severe that he threw some 15 scoreless innings over two starts after feeling the injury – it becomes harder and hard to characterize it as anything other than a legit, terribly-timed injury.

The latest comes from Bruce Levine, who reports not only that Dempster will not come off the disabled list when he’s eligible this weekend (something we already knew), but also this ugliness:

Dempster will probably not have to go on a rehab start to the minor leagues, opting to have one or two simulated outings against live hitting. The pitcher was not sure if he could be back on the active list before the All-Star break, which begins July 9.

It’s very hard to put any kind of positive spin on that. No, I still don’t think Dempster’s injury is all that serious, and no, I don’t think it scares teams away, on its own. I think they know he’s mostly just resting at this point.

But, the thing is, they’re still going to want to see him healthy and effective before making a trade. And now the window in which Dempster can confirm those things is shrinking smaller and smaller.

At the same time, I’m hearing some conflicting info from a source who suggests, without details, that there isn’t much of a reason to worry about Dempster. The sense I get is that trade talks have, in no way, been impacted by this injury, however it plays out. I can’t help but be skeptical, given how much the injury went from “injury” to injury, and how protracted it’s become.

Still, I’ll stay positive, and assume the Cubs will get the best deal possible for Dempster by July 31, and he’ll end up in a good situation with a chance to go to the playoffs.

FML. Seriously? I can’t see how this won’t hurt or hasn’t already hurt his value!

  • Fishin Phil

This whole thing smells fishier than a trunk full of carp.

    • TWC

And if anyone ’round here knows what a trunk full of carp smells like, it’s Phil.

      • hansman1982

we got him good didn’t we…wait, c-A-R-p? Well, I guess we got him better than we thought!

  • Polar Bear

Not one to speculate but I heard something through someone close to the nanny for his kids. They said he is going through a wicked divorce right now. That might be why he has had all this time off. The Cubs may just be using this as a smoke screen so his private affairs aren’t being blasted all over the newspapers.

    • Serious Cubs Fan

Are serious? Or are you BSing all of us? Dempster is going through divorce and this is the reason why he’s supposedly hurt? The Nanny? How do you hear these things lol? I’m not trying to question you but I’m honestly interested on how you hear these things? It seems a little far fetched

      • Serious Cubs Fan

Omg. Now the Dempster Divorce thing is sounding more realistic. Check this out: http://www.talk-sports.net/mlb/ This is sad.

        • Cyranojoe

Hm, that site looks about as reputable as a high school bash book.

      • Polar Bear

Easy there SCF. I’m only relaying info as it was given to me last night. Its coming through two people so take it with a grain of salt. My friend’s wife is friends with the nanny. That is where I heard the story. Not saying its completely true, but it does make some sense.

        • Serious Cubs Fan

No thats legit. Idk I hope its not. I’m sorry for speculating. But just kind of sad for his family and all if its true. You never like to hear those things

        • Jumbo

The nanny he cheated with? (according to the link above)

          • hansman1982

So a cheap looking website that appears to be filled with random conjectures and rumors is the only confirmation we have of this situation?

            • ThereWillBeCubs

FWIW, I first heard this rumor too a few weeks ago. I have no source and don’t remember where. I thought someone posted it on this site, but could be wrong.

Either way, it’s a touchy situation. It’s no business of the public, but obviously the “injury” cover is concerning.

    • JoeyCollins

Seriuosly? If that’s true I’m very sad to hear that. I hope he figures out what’s best for him and his family and that this trade doesn’t make things worse.

    • Cyranojoe

Wow, I’m so torn — I really don’t want anything hurting his trade value, and this would likely help diminish reactions to the “injury”, but on the other hand, if there’s anybody on the Cubs I most want to have an idyllic married/family life, it’s Ryan. Goddamn, no, I hope this isn’t true. It would make sense — how often do you hear about folks with kids who are sick getting torn apart in part by the havoc the disease wreaks in their lives? But I hope it’s not the case.

  • True(ly) Blue

I’m not usually into conspiracy theories but is it possible that Demp is being withheld from active duty to prevent any possible injury prior to a trade???

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

That’s always been a part of the reason.

  • Dan

Meh, I believe the Cubs are just trying to keep Dempster fresh for a potential trading partner. He’s 35 I believe and he’ll have more in the gas tank for October.

    • Dan

Why mess with his sparkling ERA and WHIP? He’s already pitched 81 innings and we’re not even half way through the season. I think it adds value!!! Mr. Captain Obvious here :P

  • Cubtoberfest

Remember Mark Prior and Kerry Wood were never hurt either….new management same misleading information?

  • rbreeze

When Dempster and Theo were seen sitting in the bleachers a few weeks ago during a workout, were they discussing his pending divorce and maybe needing some time away to get things settled?

  • rocky8263

I saw with my own eyes Dempster bowling last night. His first frame he scored six. First ball was of the gutter variety.

    • Leroy K.

I bowled a 115 today. Dang, I could of had the same fate as Dempster!!!!

    • King Jeff

If Dempster is bowling, that doesn’t lead me to believe he has some serious injury that the Cubs are hiding. If he’s really hurt and still bowling, I don’t see how anyone could let that happen right now.

  • Serious Cubs Fan

    Brett/Luke,
You guys think the Dodgers would give up Allen Webster for a package of Ryan Dempster/Lahair?
    Or
Dempster/Lahair to the Dodgers for Chris Reed and Angel Sanchez or Ethan Martin?

  • andrew

The supreme court upheld healthcare reform, Dempster will be just fine

    • Serious Cubs Fan

Andrew: He’s a Canadian lol! but i guess they have free healthcare too.

      • DocPeterWimsey

It’ ‘s not “free”: everybody pays into the same policy, sort of the way that we all pay into social security.  However, they do not do co-pays or stuff like that.  Whether Demp is still eligible depends on whether he maintains residency there and pays any taxes there, still.  (This was an issue when I was a grad student, as Canadian students in our program had to make sure that they kept some foot in Canada.)

        • Serious Cubs Fan

Doc: Okay lol, nothing free but you know what i meant lol. Lets all stop talking healthcare its starting to give me a headache

          • DocPeterWimsey

I hope that your insurance covers pain relievers!  :-D  (Sorry, I could not resist!!!)

    • DocPeterWimsey

Demp’s a Canadian…..  ;-)  (oh, and yes, I know that Canada’s system is far, far, far to the “left” of ours; my wife is Canadian!)

  • Spriggs

What are the odds? This could only happen to the Cubs. They are suddenly sitting pretty – ready to get a nice prospect or two – for an aging pitcher on the last year of his contract who doesn’t fit into their long term plans anyway. Then even more suddenly (but after a few FO fibs) they get nothing because that aging pitcher can’t keep his ___ off of/out of his young nanny. Unreal. And they aren’t saving his arm for a trade!!!

    • ThereWillBeCubs

What the hell is it to you? Look at the divorce rate in America and then tell me how pro athletes are excluded.

A guy can still be a role model in more ways than one.

      • Ogyu

I know I have always looked up to guys who bang hot young nannies as role models…

        • TWC

Unfortunately for me, banging a hot young nanny is about as likely as me pitching for the Cubs on Opening Day.

But FWIW, I’d rather do the latter.

          • Ogyu

I’d rather do both. Preferably at the same time. ;-)

            • DocPeterWimsey

Ah, if only Harry Carry could have died describing that on the air: it would have been the perfect sendoff…..

      • DocPeterWimsey

Besides, one can spin nanny boffing as just another take on family values, right?  :-D

  • Joker

I am trying not to have flashbacks to other “minor injuries” but if I hear the phrase “towel drill” in association with Dempster……………..

  • Leroy K.

I tell you what. I got a divorce. We both did things we weren’t proud of. But I am in charge of 3 people in my section in the army. They all look up to me. AND they know what I did—and what she did. You can’t automatically judge Dempster. From what I understand she was partying and spending his money. They were both at fault.

    • Rynorooter

Yes. Spending marital money is definately grounds for cheating on a spouse.

      • TWC

Look at it… a young trophy wife, in the parlance of our times, you know, and she, uh, uh, owes money all over town, including to known pornographers, and that’s cool… that’s, that’s cool, I’m, I’m saying, she needs money, man. And of course they’re going to say that they didn’t get it, because… she wants more, man! She’s got to feed the monkey, I mean uh… hasn’t that ever occurred to you, man?

        • Leroy K.

haha….obviously that’s not what i meant. But thanks guys for setting me straight.:)

        • Cyranojoe

Uh, Jenny is 4 years older than Ryan. She’s hot, but a “young trophy wife” she is not.

          • dabynsky

TWC was quoting the Big Lewbowski…

  • Richard Nose

To the stat protection arguement: He can’t increase his win total from the “DL”. …wait for it…

  • Steve

Damnit…so is he “hurt” or is he hurt??

Sounds like he has a pulled penis….

    • Richard Nose

      I love those.

    • Bob

If he would have just pulled that (himself) he wouldn’t be in trouble!

  • BleedBlueinWNeb

I can’t believe this comments section isn’t blowing up yet over this possible story! Seriously…this is bizarre. As a Cub fan who has enough to worry about in my own daily life the only thing i’m concerned with here is Dempster’s trade value moving forward and how it affects the cubs ability to get players!

    this is bizarre…

  • Cub Gone Wild

Is the nanny going to be called the new Mrs. Dumpster. She likes the Dumpster action

  • Polar Bear

I’m starting to feel bad about sharing the info on his divorce earlier. I was just stating that as a reason they may have put him on the DL. I didn’t intend for all the jokes about what led to the decision. Give him and his family some privacy while they are dealing with their issues. Hell…we, including myself, aren’t sure if the rumor is the truth.

    • Cyranojoe

Agreed. I hope for their three kids’ sake it’s not true.

  • FromFenwayPahk

This is exactly the kind of crap that does nothing to help us wear out the W flag. Watch a Theo led organization pilot us back to Dempster’s pitching/value and away from his… bowling scores.

You would not believe the stuff that never got printed in Boston while the Sox nailed two WS titles. Why not? ‘Cause it ain’t good human resource management.

I loved the meeting in the stands. 100% transparent AND entirely none of my business.
