Four wins in a row? Break up the Cubs! …

Tonight’s game is a tale of a couple pitchers who were sent to the minors after struggling, and are trying to re-establish themselves in the majors. It’s been a mixed bag so far for Jurrjens, and we’ll see about Volstad.

Geovany Soto sits again. I know Clevenger is solid, but can the Cubs really afford (from a hoped-for-trade perspective) to turn this thing into a platoon? Or is Soto feeling some ill effects of his knee?

It’s raining in Atlanta, by the way. Not sure whether it will impact the start time.

I like that Clevenger is getting plenty of chances.  Trading Soto would be nice, though, I can’t argue with that.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      Delicate balance, I think.

  • http://bleachernation.com lou brock lives

Lineup I saw/heard had DeJesus starting & at leadoff tonight

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Right you are. First lineup I saw had Campana in there – wonder if that was a mistake, or if DeJesus was made available after initial lineup came out.

  • Featherstone

Yeah I am wondering where Dejesus is tonight. Im really liking the 1-3 lineup for Dejesus, Castro, Rizzo

  • cubfanincardinalland

Brett, I think the voodoo is finally starting to wear off. See Chris Carpenter out for the season and probably having to undergo shoulder surgery with the hopes of maybe pitching next year. And the Cardinals owe him 13.5 million for next season. That’s a shame.

  • MightyBear

Where’s the pictures of the hot chicks? The Cubs win 4 in a row with that one girl and now you don’t post her? If the Cubs lose tonight, I blame you.

? Never been any chicks in the Pre-Gamin’, just the Series Previews…

  • João Lucas

Hey, the Cubs have signed 12th rounder Justin Amlung!

    • MoneyBoy

      Any clue on the $$?

      • João Lucas

Nope. I just checked the recent transactions on cubs.com and there it was.

      • Jonski

Its being reported that the Cubs have signed 18 out of the 20 top picks ,but can’t find the terms on Mcneil the 3rd round pick.

        • North Side Irish

McNeil signed for $425,000, slot was $471,900 so Cubs saved a little.

          • Jonski

Thanks north side…I say lock up Almora,Underwood, and take a big swing at the kid that committed to Vanderbilt any signing after that is a bonus.

  • rcleven

Guess rain didn’t effect the start time. 6:10 it is.

PROGRAMMING ALERT: Tonight’s #Cubs vs. #Braves game will begin in a rain delay. We’ll update first pitch time when we get that information..

    Got it right this time.
    Cubs twitter was wrong.

    • Brady

Sigh, hope Volstad doesn’t overthink his start in the delay. I’d like to see him finally have a good outing.

      • rcleven

Let’s just hope he takes his key from T Wood. If he wants a chance to pitch for the parent club he will have to produce.

  • Luke D

On this day, one year ago, we were 34-50
    Today, we are 30-49

    Hoo hah.

    GO CUBS.

    • Brady

I will say that the Cubs currently look in better shape to win games (until trades start happening) than last years team.

      • Luke D

That’s what I was getting at.

Cubs up 3-1! Hopefully the first was “The Inning” for Volstad.

  • willis

I have zero confidence watching Volstad pitch. He’s just not good.

  • Cyranojoe

Start off with five balls and a strike… not auspicious, Chris.

  • RY34

    typical volstad implosion coming up

  • Josh

And there is Volstad’s inning we have all been waiting for

    • RY34

      pathetic! same ol volstad.

  • Luke D

    Tomorrow’s headline:

Chris Volstad Blows and Other Bullets.

  • RY34

game over, get his dumbass out of there.

  • http://bleachernation.com #1lahairfan

    Make him relieved.

  • calicubsfan007

Volstad had the “inning” again. I am wondering if he psyches himself out and causes him to have these bad inning moments every game he pitches.

    • Carew

I feel like he would be a decent bullpen guy. Hes decent for a few innings

  • Cub Gone Wild

Why do the let Volstadt pitch past 4 innings is Sveum supid or what? E ery game he grts waxed in the 5th

    • Drew7

So he should have pulled his starter after 4 innings of 1-run ball and 50-something pitches?

  • Evan

The only thing Volstad is good at is making me miss Big Z…

Meanwhile, Dolis is doing his best Marmol impression.

    • RY34

Dolis is fucking worthless too! another god damn walk of the pitcher! jesus christ grow some nuts and find the damn strike zone!

      • Carew

Dude calm it down a little bit

      • DocPeterWimsey

Also, your anatomy sucks.  The muscles and nerves involved with fine motor control of the arm do not involve the testicles in any way.

  • nkniacc13

send Dolis back down when Dempster is ready and put Volstad in bullpen

  • Drew7

    Good effort by Clevenger…

  • Jp

Going out on a limb and saying we won’t be seeing any Rizzo go ahead hits… Man volstad stinks.

  • calicubsfan007

Is it safe to say the Volstad experiment is over? Dolis is really not ready to pitch in the majors yet, horrible outing for him.

  • Jason “Thundermug”

Andrew Cashner had to leave the game tonight due to a possible elbow injury.

    • calicubsfan007

Jason: That sounds like his previous injury is acting up.

    • rcleven

Lat injury not in the elbow.

      • calicubsfan007

Rcleven: I was talking about the shoulder (rotator cuff) injury that he had a while back. If the shoulder acts up, it puts more strain on the elbow to compensate for the shoulder acting up. That’s what I meant.

  • Jason “Thundermug”

Yeah but this doesn’t sound too good when you hear this.

There’s no word yet from the team, but Cashner’s last warm-up pitch prior to the third inning went to the backstop, and he then appeared to point to his elbow

  • Drew7

So Campana just needs a trampoline in front of the plate to get on? Should be able to get one of those pretty easily…

  • Jason “Thundermug”

Well if it is just a lat strain that is Good News I was just reading what rotoworld.com was saying. Hope Cashner gets back soon

    • rcleven

Anything to do with the shoulder is never good. Lets hope it just a strain.

      • Cubs Dude

Its a strained lat. Probably be out only a couple weeks. I had that guy going on my fantasy team during a 2 start week. He was throwing absolute smoke the first couple innings. But he is an injury waiting to happen.

        • Jonski

Yeah I got him and Bauer in a keeper league so im pretty bummed .Atleast its just a strain he is either going to have to learn how to control his velocity or be a closer in waiting IMO.

        • rcleven

Won’t really know extent of injury till they MRI him. Here’s to hoping it’s just a strain.

  • mudge

That’s sad news about Cashner. I’ve never seen anything like Volstad’s pattern with the big inning. It’s almost artful – you couldn’t maintain that pattern if you tried. He’s had big innings early too, so he might not be a reliable bullpen call either.

  • cubs1967

if Volstad -Wells-Maholm were horses; they’d be shot; what a collective waste of 10M. good luck to them on their new teams next year.

maybe time to rethink the garza trade…….really need all the good SP we can find; suspects are just that……see the indians after CC trade for instance.

    • Toby

I’ll give you Volstad (who I think is still young enough to turn things around) and Wells, but Maholm has been pretty solid this year.

      • Njriv

I agree, Maholm has had his bad starts this year, but he has also had some really good ones, more than Wells and Volstad can say

        • Toby

I still believe that Volstad can turn things around. They just need to sit him in the minors after this year and let him work on his pitching. Marlins rushed this kid and it is showing. Some pitchers develop later than others. Look at Moyer.
