The Cubs look to rebound from yesterday’s clunker, and Jeff Samardzija looks to keep up his July success. Pro-tip, Jeff: don’t pitch to Carlos Lee.

I keep waiting to hear Len interrupt the broadcast, “Hold on, we’ve just been informed of a trade…”

yeah i wouldn’t be shocked if they show Dempster shaking hands with his former teamates if he gets traded tonight

  • calicubsfan007

Solid lineup, hopefully LaHair doesn’t misjudge another ground ball in the outfield. I am betting that Demp gets traded tomorrow. Just a hunch.

  • jr5

Looking at this lineup, which has basically been the preferred everyday lineup since Rizzo arrived, you can see why they’ve been playing better. It’s not a playoff lineup, but just adding a legit, middle of the order bat to what they already had makes it much more competitive, 1-8. It allows others to hit in more natural spots. Now, I’m not saying that they’re a piece away from contending next season (because I don’t believe Soriano/LaHair will be able to repeat performances, nor do I think Rizzo is going to hit .360, among other factors) but it’s still encouraging, and shows what sort of impact one player can have on an offense, even though he can’t bat 9 times.

I have a good tingling feeling that when the Dempster trade is made, Brett’s headline will have a nice big BOOM! in front of it. I love the BOOMS.

    • Brett

Only if it’s an obviously good return. It’s more likely to be a “At Long Last:”

      • T Wags

Oh I know the booms are sacred. The reason I said it is because my tingling feeling tells me were all going to be very happy!

      • MoneyBoy

Brett … my lord … you chillens don’t know your music … “” Etta James – At Last wink!

    • Nick

B Jax with a lead-off double for Iowa. Hopefully he can start to find his groove again

    Fresh of twitter:

    • T Wags

FINALLY!! I can’t wait to see some Soler Power in the Minor League Daily!

      • http://bleachernation loyal100more

and thus starting the road to a promising major league career with the chicaco cubs! soler, if only you could grasp how much we want you to be another big banger in wrigley… well youd probably get scared and defect back to cuba. SOLER POWER the cubs newest utility!

  • Bret Epic

Anyone else really disappointed they didn’t show Zach Galifianakis throw the first pitch? Hopefully they’ll show a replay because that’s some bull crap.

  • someday

Boom! Hope that gets Castro going.

  • Whiteflag

    Nice moves Geo.

  • Brett

Thanks to the rain delay, the EBS is going to be delayed. My apologies.

    • Wester

I dunno…this kind of lightning, early game tomorrow. I think this is a cub win in the books.

    • MoneyBoy

Brett, dude, get some sleep, you’re in EDT for god’s sake. Does The Wife remember your name? wink, wink

  • LouCub

Doug Padilla is Twitering saying the Cards are front runners to get Demp…getting interseting

    • Jeff

Unless it’s Shelby Miller, I ain’t interested. St. Louis has a worse farm system than we do. ugh :(

      • someday…2015?

If the Cards are considered the front runners then that probably means they have considered a Demp for Miller straight up trade. I don’t think thats gonna get done though. I would pee my pants if we got Shelby Miller for Demp straight up.

      • North Side Irish

Cardinals actually have a much better farm system than the Cubs, especially at the top. They’ve got three prospects who are probably ranked higher than anyone the Cubs have (Tavares, Miller, Martinez) and a fourth who probably ranks right around Almora and Soler. But of course all of them would probably be off limits for Dempster.

        • Jeff

Exactly, The Cards would want to send us their crap prospects, no thanks! I’d rather get someone from Texas, Detroit or L.A.

        • Njriv

If they are not willing to part with Miller, I’m sure the Cubs would be fine with Carlos Martinez if he is available.

          • someday…2015?

I may be wrong but IMO I think the Cards might be ready to move Shelby Miller and let Martinez take over as their top pitching prospect. If you had to go by recent numbers it wouldn’t even be close, Martinez is dominating and Miller is struggling. It could make since to move Miller… The deal I proposed above could be possible if the Cards feel strongly enough about Martinez. If your the Cardinals you gain an experienced pitcher, a power lefty, and a lefty reliever. In the end you give up a struggling pitching prospect, and two potential all star position players. I think the deal works for both sides and like I said before the Cards won’t hurt too much as long as they can hold onto Martinez… Now all that being said I wouldn’t complain at all if that deal got done but Millers name was replaced with Martinez.

    • North Side Irish

Nothing like that on Padilla’s Twitter feed…

      • LouCub

It’s there, it’s been posted on Cubs Den and Cubbies Crib as well…If Demp goes there, the price is always higher within the division and Theo traded Marshall to cincy, he’ll do it if the price is right

        • Toby

Cards did give up Rasmus and P.J. Walter last year to get Edwin Jackson. Cards aren’t afraid to sacrifice the future to win in the present. Cards might part with Miller along with others for Dempster. I won’t be surprised if Cubs and Cards do a 4-8 player deal.

          • someday…2015?

How great would it be to get Shelby Miller from the Cards and then have him dominate his former team as a Chicago Cub?… How about this… Shelby Miller, Kolton Wong and Tavarez for Dempster, LaHair, and Russel. I know that’s probably not realistic but a Cub fan can dream the ultimate positive.

  • João Lucas

    Game over. Cubs win!

  • Zogie

The cubs win in a 7 inning game. Their bats came alive just in time to come out with a victory. The cubs had some tough luck early hitting line drive outs all over the field, but came through in the 7th. Shark pitched well and got out of some tough situations. He did give up several hits and walks which caused him to leave early because of pitch count. The bullpen help Shark finish up the night and Russell earned another win. DeJesus 0-3 1RBI Sac Fly 1K. Castro 1-3 HR has been hitting the ball hard the last few games and looks to be coming out of his slump. Rizzo 0-4 but he is still hitting the ball hard and the best thing is that he rarely strikes out. Soriano 1-3 K. LaHair 0-3 2K has looked rather awful since the all-star break. He is striking out at a very high rate and has had some bad plays in the outfield. He could use a break to calm down. Soto 1-3 RBI came through to give the cubs the lead in the 7th. He hit the ball hard all night and is getting closer to the .200 mark. Barney 2-3 has come out of the break with some great ABs. I read he was trying to change his approach a bit and it has been working for him. Valbuena 1-3. Johnson 0-1 K. Baker 1-1 1 2B, 2RBI. Baker is red hot right now and will probably get the start over Lahair tomorrow when the marlins put a lefty on the mound. My shout out goes to Geovany Soto. I believe this is his first shout out and it is time for him to get a little love.

  • Bucky23

Easy there zogie let’s not be giving soto any shout outs. They had a runner in a run down and Soto just flat out fumbled the ball. What a pathetic play. Soto sucks and should be released. Shout out to Soto hahaha lay off them bath salts

    • Zogie

Soto deserves the shout out because of how he has played the past few games. In his last 7 games his average has been .346. Bucky23 sometimes players deserve a shout out, Soto had one bad play in a rundown when part of his equipment knocked the ball loose from his hands. It could have happened to any catcher. Soto hit the ball hard all night and came through with a 2 out RBI single to give the cubs the lead in the 7th. Very well deserving of some recognition. BTW this is his first shout out from me all season I believe.
