A day later, the Cubs will try to recover from an all-around ugly even in St. Louis. They’ll try salvage the last game of the series, and forget the disastrous 12-run inning last night. Apparently it’s costume day for the Cubs (Tony Campana dressed as The Flash, Anthony Rizzo dressed as Buzz Lightyear, etc.), so maybe that will keep things a bit lighter than they might otherwise be. Apparently it was Matt Garza’s idea, and the Cubs are to dress as superheroes on the way to Pittsburgh tonight.

Pics or it didn’t happen.

On today’s lineup, it’s probably nothing, but Geovany Soto gets another day off – his second in this series. It’s not a strict platoon with Steve Clevenger, so, in a series facing three right-handers, it’s strange to see Clevenger get two starts. I’m not saying anything’s brewing, I’m just saying … it’s odd.

Garza’s antics are annoying. Hopefully no DL stint and they can move him out of here.

    • Cubs Dude

If Garza heard you say that I am sure he would give you a shaving cream pie to the face. Because that’s what Garza does, over and over and over again…

    • Spencer

yeah. pitching well is pretty annoying.

  • Quintz

What did Garza do? Did I miss something? I feel out of the loop.

  • http://bleachernation.com someday…2015?

Just read on mlbtraderumors.com that Cardinals GM will make trades with in their own division but will not give up top prospects in those deals(Miller, Tavarez, and Martinez.) Well you can take the Cardinals off the trade list for Demp and Garza… I do think that the Cardinals would love to add a Shawn Camp or Manuel Corpas, cheap, effective, relief pitchers…

    • Tim

Corpas really showed the cards his stuff yesterday :)

    • Quintz

God help me if I start believing all the reports on who is in/out on Dempster and what they are willing to give/not give. Why would a team divulge the truth about any of this anyway? To lose leverage? Negotiating is about manipulation, not truth telling.

      • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Teams aren’t always the ones behind the leaks. Sometimes it’s an agent. Sometimes it’s a lower-level employee who wants the glory of leaking stuff. Sometimes it’s a friend of a player. Sometimes it’s the player.

If it were as simple as just keeping quiet, there would never been any rumors that actually come true. The truth is, there are a LOT of lips to keep sealed if you’re going to keep discussions quiet. It’s often not practical.

      • Quintz

I’m not saying all of it is lies (or misdirection). I’d be willing to bet there’s a lot of legitimate leaks, as you are insinuating. The problem is that there are just as many “leaks” that are false, or are nothing more than one guys speculation that are treated as fact. To be honest, I like it, and find it to creates interesting conversation. I’m just not ready to treat mlbreaderumors or Daily Dish as gospel even though they are fun reads (not near as good as BN, of course). I think it’s interesting that according to the “Weekly World News”, Mitt Romney is choosing “Batboy” as his VP candidate, though I’m not sure I believe it 100%.

        • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

You definitely always have to keep your head about you, take grains of salt where appropriate, and approach things as a cynic. I think if everyone did that, they’d enjoy this time of year a whole lot more at the end of it.

  • Jeff

I wonder if Travis Wood is wondering why they keep hitting the ball so hard when he throws his 88 mph fastball right down the middle of the plate?????

  • calicubsfan007

I really don’t want to be swept by those jerks. Come on guys. We just need the starting pitching to just throw complete games, then our bullpen wouldn’t cause us to lose, again.

    • Jeff

I hate to say this but why does it seem like the other team shows up to play but we have to take a 4 run ass kicking before we wake up and get our heads in the game, so frustrating that we can’t come out strong. We are so tentative and put ourselves in a hole that makes it hard to come back from.

  • Jeff

Wood sucks…come on. This guy will be lucky to be a #5. Ugh

  • Jeff

Wood really, really sucks!!!! keep throwing that 88mph fastball down the middle of the plate, maybe you will learn one day. Idiot!!!

    • Cuyler-Stephenson-Wilson

yeah that marshall trade was a real winner!. looks like the real t wood is back. 4th starter at best. crappy trade.

      • leroy k.

UGGGH. Can we please put the Marshall/Wood trade to rest. We both got the same back. Wood is fine. Let it go already!!!! Prove to me that Marshall is doing SO well in Cinci as opposed to Wood in Chicago…

        • Jeff

The real issue is not how well Marshall is doing vs. Wood, rather who else could we have traded Marshall for instead of Wood. If Wood is only a .500 pitcher with a 4.5 era, what do we really have there, neither Sappelt or Torreyes have done much in the minors to be all excited about.

Much like the Volstad trade, not really great returns.

          • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

To say nothing of the rest of your comment, Torreyes is turning it on, and is the fourth youngest player in his entire league. We need to broadcast this message more loudly – Torreyes’ stock has improved this year in my eyes, not retreated.

            • Scotti

Amen. Torreyes has hit over .325 for the last two months and has over a .900 OPS in the second half–all as a 19-y/o in A+ ball. When Castro, who also started slow at Daytona, started catching fire there (at a similar age) we were drooling… To be sure, Torreyes profiles as a different player but he still profiles as a very good looking 2B with a hit tool that is off the charts.

          • Drew7

That’s a point that is rarely discussed. Since that trade kinda came out of nowhere, we (the fans) really didn’t have a chance to weigh it against any other rumored offers.

            • Scotti

Imagine your boss judging your performance not based on what you DID do but on what you “reportedly” could have done based on “sources” who “leaked” to “blogs…” “Drew, you seem to have done really well but, per this blog here, you suck.” Not good.

        • Harry-Jack-Ronnie

          ummmm.your really gonna ask? seriously.

4.54 xFIP/0.3 WAR for your buddy t wood

          2.25xFIP/0.9 WAR for marshall.

maybe if the boy wonder followers would not act so blind; the marshall badnwagon would not bring this up; but hence we need to.
          marshall trade bad.
          colvn trade trainwreck.

theo fucked up. deal with it.(so just another reason not to move garza….)

          • Drew7

            Why’d you change your name?

          • Scotti

I’ve led the pack in saying that the Colvin trade was a bad trade. But every GM makes bad trades. Like anything in life the real winners are those who don’t allow a few failures to stop them from getting out there and doing their best.

Brett has a real good site here and is making the Bleacher Nation brand one of the top fan brands in America. Every once in a while he’ll writre a clunker of an article or do a poor radio or blog spot. Should he allow that to stop doing what he is doing so well? Of course not. Well, neither should a GM stop trading. Jed/Theo will make some trades that don’t pan out (Colvin) and some pretty good ones too (Wood, Torreyes for Marshall).

            • jimi lives on

              lol @ brett making clunkers

              • Scotti

At least he isn’t doing TV spots yet. I’ve never really looked at his photo but I’m pretty sure he has some massive comb-over or facial warts or something… We’ll all quit the site out of shame. Unless, of course, if he has some vocal tick where he says “Cards suck!” every 20-30 seconds. That would make up for a pretty serious comb-over.

                • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

The combover starts with the hair growing off the facial warts, actually.

                  • Scotti

I’ve always wanted to do that but the wife insists on bleaching the hairs growing from my warts…
