Travis Wood had a bad day. Again. He gave up five homers, and it’s not like the wind was howling straight out to center field.

But, this is just part of the process. He was never a top of the rotation type, and anyone who told you he was, simply allowed themselves to get too caught up in some good starts. He’s still relatively young, and he’ll have ups and downs. I’m not discouraged by three bad starts, just as I wasn’t ready to crown him after five good ones.

If it’s any consolation, a number of Cubs had great offensive days, and the bullpen was great.

But an oddity on the Cardinal side caught my eye.

Rizzo has more RBI than Soto. :-/

  • someday…2015?

Castro and Rizzo go a combined 5-8 with 3 RBIs and 0 Ks. Castro 3-4 was nice to see. Good day by our future.

Posted this elsewhere, but I will post it again:

From Elias: Travis Wood is 1st starter in MLB history to allow a HR in each of the first 5 innings of a game.

  • calicubsfan007

Wow, I can’t wait for when we get good young pitching (at least Believeau didn’t suck today).

  • anotherjp

Well, this is the result of having a pitcher that gives up fly ball outs pitching in Wrigley. Against the Cards. In summer. He now sports a hr/fb ratio of 17.5%. Ouch.

    • Jackalope

He could give Jose Bautista a run for his money!

  • Fastball

This is terrible that Sveum left a young pitcher in thee game to get shelled like that. Great for his confidence and development. This is a time I have to really question Sveums thought process. This kind of thing should never happen. He has to protecr his pitcher especially a starter who was making great strides intil he got out of rithym om his days and eoutine. What lesson was he trying to teach. Big mistake by a rookie manager.

7 hits allowed by Wood, 5 homers

LaHair is nosediving. Don’t know what to make of him now.

  • Dave

The atmosphere at the game was great for the first few innings. But Wood laid a huge dump today.

    Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal

Deal is done: Greinke to #Angels, sources tell me and @jonmorosi.

What the heck is the “H” that you’ve highlighted? I can’t figure it out. It’s probably something really obvious though…

    • MaxM1908

“H” after a pitcher’s name refers to a “Hold”. It’s a common statistic for middle relievers, indicating that they came in under certain circumstances and didn’t relinquish the lead.

  • MoneyBoy

Yes, I freely admit this smacks of hindsight. But, when I watched the game Wed. vs Pitt. I thought RizzOMG really was back on track. Hit several balls hard and seemed to be tracking the pitches well.

Yes, he was “only” 2 for 4 … but he crushed all 4!!! Let’s hope Castro does a “Jobu” and makes nice with RizzOMG’s lumber and gets his groove on. And yes, I know, he did go 3 for 4.

Anyone else wonder how Harry would have butchered “Repetiveski’s” name???

Note to TWood: Throwing center cut meat to hitters like Holliday (Matt, not Doc!) will not only get your ass kicked on the field but in your wallet dude!!!

  • FromFenwayPahk

    How’s ‘stad doing?

    • FromFenwayPahk

      8IP, 4 hits, 3 walks, 5K’s and ZERO run
Atfinch posted this in another thread tonight. Thanks, dude. Keep it up big ‘stad.

      • Professional_High_A

Volstad pitched well but he didn’t seem to have dominating stuff. He got the outs when he needed to but for the first time in a while i saw a game where the line score was better than what actually happened.

  • thejackal

hey brett luke is belvieu a starter in the future??

    • Njriv

No, I think it’s safe to say he won’t be, but he can be a lefty specialist or a set-up man

  • thejackal

    thanks NJRIV

    • Njriv

      No problemo.
