A little pre-game update with (very) relevant quotes from and about the Cubs’ two biggest trade chips, Ryan Dempster and Matt Garza, which were gleaned from intrepid reporters in attendance, Doug Padilla, Patrick Mooney, and Jordan Bernfield:

  • Cubs manager Dale Sveum admitted that he would be surprised if Dempster is still a Cub come game-time tomorrow, which is a shockingly candid admission. Sveum said that Dempster is too good of a pitcher for all these teams that need a pitcher to pass up.
  • Dempster doesn’t expect a trade to come down today, though he admits that could change at any moment. My thoughts? He doesn’t expect a trade today because he’s letting the Cubs squeeze the Dodgers for the next 20 hours, before he’ll finally relent and accept a trade elsewhere (if the Dodgers don’t step up their offer).
  • Dempster doesn’t believe it will be awkward if he’s still a Cub when his start rolls around tomorrow night.
  • Garza’s bullpen session went “extremely well” today, according to Sveum. No one is reporting whether there were scouts in attendance for the session, but obviously it’s good news that things went well. Garza is still unlikely to be traded by tomorrow, but I’d say he’s as likely as any other injured player to be moved in recent memory.
  • Phil Rogers was also there for Dempster’s quotes, and he left with the impression that Dempster would definitely be willing to accept a trade to a team other than the Dodgers. “He has said he won’t discuss particular cities until he’s approached by Theo Epstein with a deal, but he doesn’t sound like a guy who is stonewalling a trade,” Rogers wrote.

“Dempster doesn’t believe it will be awkward if he’s still a Cub when his start rolls around tomorrow night.”

Dempster sounds like he’s in denial.

As for the Phil Rogers quote:
“He has said he won’t discuss particular cities until he’s approached by Theo Epstein with a deal, but he doesn’t sound like a guy who is stonewalling a trade,”

How does that mesh with Dempster already stonewalling the Braves and forcing the Cubs to basically talk with no one but LA regardless of how little LA condescends to offer? I’m not sure those two narratives can both be true.

I sort of get the idea that all we are seeing now is spin control.

    • Cyranojoe

Well, it probably won’t be awkward among the players. Among the fans, however…

    • Jimmy james

Tired of the kids gloves reporters at trib and runtimes, seriously nobody thinks hes being difficult or stonewAlling….too afraid to sY something that might hurt their friendships

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

Very much possible, given that, if Demp will only go to LA, then his and the Cubs’ interests align right now. Namely, convince the world that he’ll go elsewhere.

  • Spencer

The problem isn’t that teams are not interested in dempster it’s that he hasn’t approved a trade anywhere yet and the cubs are not willing to budge on their asking price from the dodgers

  • Dan

I understand getting a good haul of prospects for Garza, however, I think keeping him is better for the Cubs.
He is a good pitcher, is young and a great guy in the locker room (so i’ve heard). I am hoping he and the front office continue negotiations when the season ends and he gets an extension.

  • Fastball

Dempster to the Natties for Ryan Zimmerman. We can send any prospect from our farm system except Baez. If it takes multiple prospects let’m fly. Zimmerman ends the 3B quandry for many years to come. Send Vitters, Jackson and Lake along with Dempster. I don’t want to hear about the stupid Dodgers or the Braves I want some deals with meat on the bones.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Luke

Are the Nationals willing to trade Zimmerman at all?

      • Njriv

        Lol, no

      • Timmy

That’s a nice dose of wishful thinking there. Best case scenario is that we get a young not-yet-proven pitcher or a couple prospects, assuming that Dempster doesn’t try to sabotage the team further.

      • Mike

They do have that super stud Anthony Rendon in their system, but hes hurt and a couple years off, so No they probably wouldnt be moving Zimm any time soon.

    • bbmoney

Let’s ask for Bryce Harper while we’re at it.

  • thejackal

lol thought u meant there pitcher zimmerman then im on board lol of course id take RZ as well

  • Fastball

Anybody is available if you have the right player or enough players going back to make it right. Vitters, Jackson, Lake and Dempster would make me think about whom else I could suck out of Theo and then I would say yes. Maybe throw in Castillo or Clevenger

  • Fastball

I have to get offline. They wive just communicated her displeasure with my lack of attention to her. WTF she says I gotta watch the Olympics with her. WTF I’m too old for this shiite.

Trade Demp, trade Garza, don’t care…(I do want something respectable)…But, PLEASE DON’T TRADE MAHOLM!!! Why not keep a decent lefty, EVERY rotation needs one!!! People keep saying “fluke”, but he is cheap enough to hold onto and find out for sure!!! If he turns out legit, and put it all together this season, it could hurt a year or two down the road…

    • nkniacc13

Im with you especially when the Cubs have historically had a hard time developing LH SP

      • Jared

Amen…that’s the trade that bugs me most…wouldnt see any immediate effects from it, but they would damn sure be there!

    • Joshua Edwards

Agreed. I saw where Seattle pitcher Jason Vargas is in line for around $8 mill for next season based on arbitration projections.

Maholm at $6.5 sounds like a steal compared to that. I hope the Cubs keep his value, as well as his ability to mentor/work with that other lefty pitcher, T. Wood.

The squeezing the Dodgers til the deadline angle seems to be what is going on. Mitch Williams on Chicago Tribune Live basically summed it up by saying that he is going to wait it out til the deadline, but if the Braves are the only offer to go to a contending team he will go.

  • MichiganGoat

This is spin control I’m now certain it’s the Dodgers or bust and everyone knows that is the truth.

    • http://www.worldseriesdreaming.com dabynsky

Well if he goes for a package of crap, I’m talking less than Garrett Gould types, in a trade than we know that was true.

      • Smitty

If he Dempster goes to the Dodgers for anything other than Webster or Lee, then we know it was true….otherwise they would just say forget you Dempster, we will deal with you in the offseason.

  • Pistol Pete

Trade ’em all and let God sort ’em out.

  • Andrewmoore4isu

I think dempster is squeezing you Brett not te dodgers

  • Kevin

Can Dempster be traded after the non-waiver trade deadline? How do trades work with teams claiming a player off waivers?

    • nkniacc13

he can but would need to pass thru waiver to be traded to any team otherwise he can only be traded to the team that claims him

  • cubsin

Aren’t we under the gun here timewise? I thought the original deal with the Braves was Dempster and cash for Delgado and a lesser prospect. Wouldn’t “Larry” Bud need to approve the cash portion of the transaction prior to the 4:00 PM Tuesday deadline?

  • nkniacc13

every deal needs to be complete by that time regardless if $ is included

  • steve

Us T Dempster isn’t stonewalling deals? He screwed us out of the atlanta deal, & is forcing the cubs to negotiate with only the dodgers, if that ain’t stonewalling then I hate to see what is. We had a good deal for him, now we’ll be forced to take a lot lesser deal simply cause he wants to whine like a bitch to get his way. I’m so sick of all the excuses, all the BS involved with trying to make him come thru this looking like a good guy. He talked of helpingwith a good return on him, & when we get i

What National pitchers are worth getting excited about for Dempster? What’s realistic for the current market?

    • Dumpgobbler

I can get after this one for you. Alex Meyers, Alex Meyers and Alex Meyers.

  • Tennessee Cub

Wish I had CSN in Tennessee. Only time I get a game is WGN. WGN should show every Cubs game.

  • anotherjp

I’m not convinced about Dempster wanting to help the Cubs squeeze the Dodgers- after all, that’ll become his new team and I’d think he would like to get them the best deal possible. I look at Dempster in this situation entirely as self-serving and is the reason Theo is pissed. Methinks Sveum is also cognizant of this and explains why he’d be surprised if Dempster is still around after tomorrow. The sooner the Cubs unload this jerk the better- guys like that are great for causing discontent with younger players in order to make themselves look better or gain leverage. Comments the last couple of days from Samardjiza and Rizzo about what a great influence Demp is must chap Theo’s ass.

    • Kevin

No more long term contracts, this is total Bullshit

  • Puma0821

My prediction: Justin Germano throws a no-hitter and we trade him to the Dodges for Ryan dempster and Zach Lee!

  • Picklenose

I’m thinking it may not be worth it to trade Sori if we have to eat his salary. At the beginning of the year I would have said the opposite, but he seems have bought in and is producing. Not at an all star level, or anywhere near his contract, but at an acceptable level and his defense has improved. If we could get a first rate prospect, or not have to pay his salary, then trade. Otherwise, it is really a loss. We won’t get any better production, and will still be dropping the same amount of money. Wait for the offseason, then try to move him to the AL.

  • steve

He talked of helping the cubs with a good return, we get it and he nixes it cause haint going to play with Lilly. I am angry cause that was a good trade for this team, yet we all know that we’ll have to take a package of players likely to never be that good just to give him what he wants. The dodgers have the edge in thisnegotiation cause Dempster handed it to them, & we won’t get anything better than marginal. By now he should just take the atl deal cause obviously the dodgers ain’t really interested in him unless we just give him away.

  • die hard

Aug 1 will be start of a new day with new team for Dempster, Soriano, Soto, Garza, LaHair, DeJesus, Marmol, Campana and, and, and, Castro….mark it down, heard it here first.

    • baldtaxguy

If one Cub is traded, its a “new Cubs team” so it works for you

    • Drew7

Can we get a 30-hour *die-hard blog-a-thon*? Maybe you and Ace could pair up next year?
