Trade Deadline Blogathon: Hour 14

Holy crap, holy crap, holy crap … Ok. I’m cracking just a little bit.

I am currently blogging – here, on Facebook, and on Twitter (hash tag #BNBlogathon for those who want to jump into the fray themselves) – for 30 hours straight, until slightly past MLB’s July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. I’ll be doing recaps on the process throughout the day, but you’ll also see normal posting (Bullets, Series Preview, Pre-Gamin’, EBS), as well as an uptick in rumor/trade posts.

Total Posts So Far:

17 (and a WHOLE bunch of updates).

News and Rumors Since the Last Recap:

BOOM. Paul Maholm traded to Braves. BOOM. Reed Johnson traded to Braves. BOOM. Geovany Soto traded to Rangers.

Most Interesting Tidbit Since the Last Recap:

It has to be the Maholm/Johnson trade to the Braves. Not only does it have implications related to the deal, itself, but it also means Ryan Dempster won’t be going to the Braves. That suggests the Cubs have further lost leverage with the Dodgers, or that they didn’t need that leverage anyway (or, relatedly, that the leverage was already completely gone).

Current Thoughts About the Chicago Cubs’ Trade Deadline Strategy/Execution:

Still waiting to see the returns on Maholm and Johnson (the return on Soto was about as expected – not much), but I’m glad the Cubs are moving their movable pieces. As I type this, it looks like the main piece coming back to the Cubs is 21-year-old pitcher Arodys Vizcaino, who was one of the Braves’ big four pitching prospects coming into the year until he had Tommy John surgery. This is a very, very good get for the Cubs. Risky, but very, very good.

Current Beverage/Stimulant of Choice:

I actually ended up getting a Mr. Spokacola from Burger King, which is a drink my friends invented in middle school – pretty much the only time you invent soda machine beverage mixes. It’s three parts Coke/Diet Coke, one part Sprite, and one part Mr. Pibb (Dr. Pepper will do, if you have to).

Strangest Thought Passing Through My Mind:

I will never be able to sleep again.

A Selection of #BNBlogathon Tweets:

Current Mood:

Thankful that a deal (or two) actually happened this year.

Just saw that the Cubs are discouraging talk about BJax coming up. Part of a trade? I agree with Goat that it’s looking like a real possibility.

    1. Professional_High_A

Garza to reds is what I’ve heard

      1. Professional_High_A

Heard it hear first. If it happens. If not then I was just kidding, but it will happen.

Bow den tweeted Soriano blocked trade with San Francisco

    1. ChiTown

Was later reported that this rumor is not true

      1. Cyranojoe

        I hope that’s true.

  5. hansman1982

Not included in this Twitter roundup – and I tried sooooo hard…

BTW that is nothing compared to the Suicide we had in little league

1 part everything…including hard liquor (hey it was the 80′s, Mom’s still carried babies on their laps in cars)

    1. Internet Random

      Suicide… Word up.

    2. Internet Random

In Germany they call Fanta Orange and Coke “Spezi”. It’s pretty damned tasty.

  6. Chef

Any whispers on LaHair yet? Somebody mentioned he left the dugout early as well.

    1. Whiteflag

that might have been a joke.

    2. calicubsfan007

@chef: Could he be part of possible Demp deal?

  7. willis

Still not liking the Maholm deal. But we’ll all know more by next spring/early summer.

And I wanted to see Jackson called up. May as wel. Put him n CF, move DeJesus back to RF and see what th kid has. But doesn’t seem like it will happen. Meh.

    1. atfinch

May even take longer, depending on Vizcaino. Even if he’s lights out early next year, still have to temper expectations until maybe even 2 years from the surgery. Don’t you think?

    2. Drew7

Just curious, but what did you expect to get for Maholm? Or did you not want him dealt at all?

      1. willis

I would have preferred him not be dealt at all because he’s a damn good pitcher. Always has been. But, he’s nothing flashy so even more so, I didn’t expect him to fetch a strong return. I’m all about building from the rotation on down. He could have been a key piece to that. Saying that…

I am nervous about taking a chance on a recovering TJ arm for a proven lefty starter. Will Vizcaino be a very good pitcher? Very well could be, but it’s a huge risk. Especially when considering what the Cubs gave up. A LH innings eater for 6.5 millie is tough to pass on. I really like Maholm. So I hate to see him go.

I didn’t want to see him dealt. Nor did I expect it. The return seems ok if everything falls perfectly into place. But a lot of work to be done before then. Hopefully Vizcaino makes a full recover and we can see what he has by May or June of next year in the minors. Again, he very well could be a good pitcher for this organization, just tough to give up Maholm for him. IMO.

    3. T Wags

Dude, look at Vizcaino’s minor league numbers and keep in mind that he was young for his league at all stops. The guy has serious potential.

      1. Drew7

        This^

        1. bbmoney

Agreed. Love the upside with Vizcaino. Certainly big potential to not pan out at all, but by all accounts he has electric stuff.

        2. MIkeL

…..I think some people look at Maholm’s and think that he can actually sustain that production…..seems like people are overvaluing a 4/5 starter and a utility outfielder. The cubs got a guy back who some think might be better than Delgado despite the fact he had TJS. We should be very happy because you have to think….what more could we have gotten for malholm/Johnson….probably nothing.

          1. bbmoney

            Agrred.

      2. willis

Totally agree the kid has huge upside. I love his potential, but with me it’s hard for me to wrap my head around giving up a very good pitcher for a maybe. And a 2-3 years from now maybe.

        1. MIkeL

Calling malholm a “very good pitcher” is being AWFULLY kind…..I would disagree and call him a very average pitcher who is on an incredible hot streak. Do you not remember he had several below average/awful starts before his recent streak? His career numbers don’t match what he is doing now either.

    4. Featherstone

Vizcaino is a very legit prospect who’s only 21. He was a top 50 prospect in baseball before his TJS and given the very high success rate of TJS I think its a very acceptable risk. Think about what we just did. We turned 2 “meh” signings into a legit pitching prospect and another of which im not sure. That is absolutely HUGE!

    5. JK

I’m with you, im not liking the Maholm trade.

      1. JK

The upside of Vizcaino could be great and that’s awesome, just thought Maholm coulda been part of the plan.

        1. bbmoney

He could of been no doubt. But the plan isn’t for 2013 and that’s all his option was for, so if you can turn him into someone that could in theory be a part of the rotation 2014 and beyond and has great stuff…I’m down.

          1. JK

            I hear ya

            1. JK

Plus i just picked him up on my fantasy team last week! It was nice having a cub on my team to root for. I guess i’ll put my selfishness aside.

    6. coal

Feels like the Maholm deal is good in that it nets a pitcher who you might be able to throw out there in a playoff game who would strike fear into opposing hitters. Maholm wasn’t going to be that guy. Same with Dempster. With Hamels likely staying in Philly, I like the risk. You aren’t going anywhere in the playoffs without a shut down #1-#2 starter. At least Viscaino has a shot to be that if he can fully recover.

  8. Ngap42

Hey brett. Couldnt see the game. Did len and bob mention the blog?

  9. bbmoney

This is awesome…time for another beer.

  10. Ron

Mr. Pibb if you have too……must have been middle school!!

  11. Jesse

    You better be kidding..Not twice!

  12. Mr. Cubster

Ned Colletti wants Dempster for a case of Dodger Dogs!!!

  13. MightyBear

Reds blue jays and rangers all interested in Garza. This is a dream sequence as rangers and jays have 2 of best farms in bb.

    1. czechxican

The Rangers are desperate for sure. Without Colby Lewis and Oswalt a pulled back away from another DL stint, they need pitching to hold the team together until their hitting comes back around. I bet Theo and Jed are playing this one VERY carefully. Should be an exiting morning and afternoon.
Its an exciting time for us Cubs fans

  14. jr5

    Haha. Mr. Spokacola. That’s fantastic.

  15. cubsin

It’s quite clear that Jed and Theo are doing all the can to help keep Brett awake for the Blogathon. I’m assuming Coleman and Castillo are en route to Chicago, along with an outfielder to replace Reed Johnson (Sappelt? Jackson? Adducci?). Half of the Iowa Cubs might be here by the time the game starts tomorrow night. Szczur might get the quickest promotion ever from AA to AAA, Brenly will probably go to Iowa, as well.

  16. Master Dan

Arodys Vizcaíno, 21 years old and pitching in AAA? Wow, can’t wait to see this kid in action. Hopefully tommy john isn’t a problem.

  17. TheJDawg

Reds in talks with Dbacks for Overbay…

  18. Kurt

Love the Arodys Vizcaino pickup. This guy was untouchable until his TJ surgery. The surgery doesn’t bother me at all as many times it winds up being a trip to the fountain of youth for a pitcher.

    1. calicubsfan007

A Braves great had TJ, John Smoltz. So, I am not too worried about TJ anymore these days.

  19. Master Dan

Btw Brett, your gonna be such a mess. TOO MUCH CAFFEINE TOO EARLY. But meh.., I’m not a doctor. Can’t wait till you post pictures of yourself tomorrow. I’m going to show them to my work buddies and we’re gonna have laugh our arse off!

    1. calicubsfan007

@Master Dan: Come on, let’s see another one of your random funny pics!! (=

      1. Master Dan

OMG, I have a good one!

      2. calicubsfan007

Hahaha! Awesome!! Thanks Master Dan! Just made my day right there. I will find a pic to put up now. Just a sec…

          1. calicubsfan007

            How’s that one, Master Dan?

            1. Master Dan

Hilarious! Looks like the fear Ryan Dempster has.

              1. calicubsfan007

Haha, is the bull Theo or the fans? (=

  20. Tim

    goodnight brett :)

  21. cubsin

Dr. Pepper >>> Mr. Pibb. Even the cola they sell at Sam’s Club is closer to the real McCoy than Mr. Pibb.

    1. PRcajun

Dr. Thunder, right, right, right????? or is it Dr. Sams? Whatever happened to Mellow Yellow? Gotta say, Brett, don’t know how you do it…we started drinking as we saw Reed and Geo shaking hands?

BTW, Blue Jays are starting to pull guys from their game!!!!!! UPDATES????

  22. Jimbo

A few things, if I were to narrate a blogathon this would be my intro to the “lean” hours, can we fundraise for an edit button function, and can assman comments be sent to their own folder, many thanks, clearly you have nothing better going on..

    1. Jimbo

PS Can *crickets* be the go to reply in the wee hours of the morn?? #BNBlogathon

  23. G_Racin

OK BRETT! SUCKED ME IN! TIME TO DONATE FOLKS!

  24. Fastball

I think we did okay on Maholm. 2 very good pitchers coming our way with very high upsides and both are young 21 ish I think. So we got those boys for a long long time. If your going to have a yard sale it’s what has to be done. Only bad thing is Volstadt and Coleman are going to be starting pitchers for at least the next 2 months. Germano looked good tonight. He can fill a spot in the rotation. We still have RoLo don’t we? Last year we had 50 year olds pitching for a couple months so we will survive. Our Rotation is going to be kinda yuck tho.

    Shark
    Wood
    Germano
    Volstadt
    Coleman

    1. Ron

The excitement of this trade deadline could carry me to the end of the season with the September call ups….maybe

    2. bbmoney

Yeah if we manage to unload Dempster and trade Garza our rotation will be awful this year…and probably next year. But I think its the right thing to do. Building for 2014 and beyond.

      1. bbmoney

Time to extend Castro this offseason towards that end.

    3. Jesse

Get Volstad out and thats good.

  25. MC2

Did anyone else hear Soriano blocking trade to San Fran????

    1. TonyP

      yes

    2. calicubsfan007

      Yep (=

    3. Cyranojoe

I heard that was a rumor and has been debunked by at least one source. Who knows.

  26. Fastball

Rangers are back in on Garza. God if we can get Olt in a Garza trade I would shit myself

    1. calicubsfan007

@Fastball: Get your Depends on just in case then! (=

    2. Derek

      Outstanding

  27. calicubsfan007

@Brett: How are you staying awake all this time?

  28. Fastball

I’m ready got er double bagged just in case. Might put plastic down on the floor

  29. Dustin S

It’s been a wild ride already with some surprises. Keep up the good work Brett!

Theo and Jed have had some good success buying low. So although it will probably be years before we know how these deals worked out, I’m cautiously optimistic.

  30. Patman

Excited for a Garza talk, but Dempster thoughts still frustrating me. Where does Theoyer stand with him, is all leverage lost?
