I am currently blogging – here, on Facebook, and on Twitter (hash tag #BNBlogathon for those who want to jump into the fray themselves) – for 30 hours straight, until slightly past MLB’s July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. I’ll be doing recaps on the process throughout the day, but you’ll also see normal posting (Bullets, Series Preview, Pre-Gamin’, EBS), as well as an uptick in rumor/trade posts.

It took me some time to get my bearings this morning, because I usually focus heavily on writing in the mornings, and then Twitter/Facebook/comments/etc., later in the day. I’m trying to do all at once, and I didn’t realize how difficult it is.

And I’m going to be on the radio at 4:30pm CT in Pittsburgh (you can listen here) to talk Cubs/Pirates. The Blogathon’s tentacles reach everywhere!

News and Rumors Since the Last Recap:

The Dodgers and Cubs are still in discussions about Ryan Dempster AND Alfonso Soriano, according to Tim Brown and Ken Rosenthal.

Most Interesting Tidbit Since the Last Recap:

Cliff Lee might be on the trade block, which could impact the Cubs’ efforts, depending on how much of his salary the Phillies are willing to eat. He’s about to turn 34, and makes $25 million from 2013 to 2015, plus a $27.5 million vesting option in 2016. That’s a tough contract to move if you want to get a nice return.

Current Thoughts About the Chicago Cubs’ Trade Deadline Strategy/Execution:

Still not a lot to say. The Cubs are “underground,” but we know they’re deep in talks with a number of teams about a number of players.

Current Beverage/Stimulant of Choice:

A nice chai latte. It’s a smooth way to start the process.

Strangest Thought Passing Through My Mind:

My eyes remain really heavy. I think my “sleep in really late” strategy is causing me some problems, because it forced me to, like, fall back asleep at 7am this morning. So now my body is rebelling, thinking that today was just going to be a sleepy day.

Good thing that Nats are backing their way in cause Dempster will stick it right in their asses, too.

  • 2much2say

Wren will save the day and re-engage Cubs for Dempster plus Lahair/Johnson for
    Delgado.

    • Max Miller

We had better get a few high upside prospects with that deal.

  • Njriv

@JimBowdenESPNxm If Cubs call Braves w/ same Dempster deal & have a signed doc from Demp approving it….it could still get done.

    Pull the trigger!

    • Fishin Phil

Hell, I’ll sign the document for them! Oops, did I say that?

Not sure why the Nationals would even be interested in Dempster’s services. Strasburg (albeit with an innings limit), Gonzalez, Zimmerman and Jackson are all probably better options than Demp. I mean, I suppose he’d be a #4 fallback in the playoffs if/when they shut Strasburg down but still.

Nats farm system presents some nice pieces. I severely doubt Ryan approves a trade to Washington though.

    • PRcajun

Stratsburg inning count is at 117.1 out of ??? (was it 160 IP???)…I wonder if they have a Stratsburg-IP-meter (a la Shawon-o-meter)????

  • Fastball

I wonder if they will take an E-Signature.

  • Fastball

LOL… I have an autographed Dempster ball I could scan that and send it too them.

  • Fastball

The Nats are watching Zimmermans innings closely as well. Lot of talk about the Nats going to a 6 man rotation the last two months of the season to keep Zimmerman and Strasburg available for a playoff run. Dempster being a two month rental for them makes sense. They won’t be interested in bringing him back after the season is over. We may not get as high a prospect on their list of Top 20 but…. their Top 20 is most likely much better than the Dodgers list of Top 20. Maybe the let us take 1 Top 20 and 2 Top 21-50 our pick of the litter. I would do something like that for Dempster.

    • cjdubbya

      In that case, I’ll take #s 1, 21 and 22. :)

  • Ogyu

Am I the only person who feels an urge to say “gesundheit” whenever somebody says “Shin-Soo Choo?”

    • Max Miller

My fantasy baseball team this year is the Chattanooga Soo Choos.

      • Ogyu

        Love it.

      • Jeff

Lookout for the Chattanooga Soo Choos…..let’s hope some Lookouts pack up their bags and drive up to Sevierville soon in a Dempster trade!!!!! Pardon me boy, is that my train to Chicago?

GO BRETT GO! GO BRETT GO!

  • Tennessee Cub

Getting that vibe that Soriano and Dempster are heading to LA. Call it Cat’s intuition. Cool, another reference to a cat!!

    • Jeff

Good to see that this forum has many Tennessee based Cub fans!! I know I’m not alone….lol

  • Tennessee Cub

Marlins keeping Josh Johnson, basically we are not getting close to the offers we wanted.

  • Fastball

Shark thinks Dempster stays with the Cubs.
I have a idea that the Reds may come and make a deal for Campana. They need a bench speedster for the playoffs and he’s a home town boy and very popular around Cinci. I live close and the Reds fans always talk about him.

  • Tennessee Cub

Yeah buddy, I hate the Cardinals but most my in laws family love em. Good weekend for me. Question–just read that the Cubs are breaking the backs trying to help Dempster get to LA? WHY? He didn’t help us out.

  • North Side Irish

    Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal
Source: #Cubs “trying to bend over backwards” to get Dempster to #Dodgers, his desired team. Talks continue.

Which is what is important to all of us…Dempster going where he wants to go. Screw leverage!

    • Ryan G

You have to take all the reports with a grain of salt this time of year.

  • LEO L

    hey brett,
would a poll on the website be feasable. could be interesting to see what the predictions are and waht really happens. My vote is that dempster goes to the braves. also think soraino doesnt get traded until august if it all

  • http://twitter.com/SouvenirCity Engine 78

“Bend over backwards” the latest from Rosenthal on the Cubs efforts to move Dempster. Not going to help perceptions of Ryan once he’s gone. This is really turning out to be negative for everyone involved.
