Trade Deadline Blogathon: Hour Seven

I am currently blogging – here, on Facebook, and on Twitter (hash tag #BNBlogathon for those who want to jump into the fray themselves) – for 30 hours straight, until slightly past MLB’s July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. I’ll be doing recaps on the process throughout the day, but you’ll also see normal posting (Bullets, Series Preview, Pre-Gamin’, EBS), as well as an uptick in rumor/trade posts.

While you’re taking it all in, how about picking yourself up a BN shirt or sweatshirt or something? You deserve it.

And I’m going to be on the radio at (new time) 4:15pm CT in Pittsburgh (you can listen here) to talk Cubs/Pirates. The Blogathon’s tentacles reach everywhere!

Total Posts So Far:

9 (and a couple updates).

News and Rumors Since the Last Recap:

Ryan Dempster remains the heavy focus, with all other players apparently under lock and key.

Most Interesting Tidbit Since the Last Recap:

We’ve heard now from multiple sources that the Braves would be willing to put Randall Delgado back on the table for Ryan Dempster. But we’ve also heard that the Cubs are “bending over backwards” to get a deal done with L.A. Grumble.

Also, Carlos Zambrano is apparently headed to the Miami bullpen. Nail down the Gatorade cooler now.

Current Thoughts About the Chicago Cubs’ Trade Deadline Strategy/Execution:

Do you want to share your thoughts, and your hopes and dreams for the deadline? Head over to the Message Board and do it.

Current Beverage/Stimulant of Choice:

Coke Zero. I had a late lunch – still trying to re-organize my schedule – so it was my standard lunch beverage.

Strangest Thought Passing Through My Mind:

The Wife is currently taking a nap right in front of me. It’s a good thing she isn’t pulling this crap tomorrow.

A Selection of #BNBlogathon Tweets:

Current Mood:

Feeling lecture-y about the Dempster situation, as if to say, “Hey, you guys. Get a good deal done.” …

Bad choice of beverage, lay off the sugar for as long as you can…

      Ugh, i mean caffeine…

    2. jimbob

Coke Zero has no sugar… just chemicals

  2. IACub

Is that the stern face you’re going to use with your kids?

  3. MichiganGoat

Sigh, it’s going to be a bumpy night

Great Job Brett. Total off topic question and didn’t know which post to actually ask so figured this would be appropriate.

I’m from NY and basically never am able to watch the games except highlights. After watching Rizzo’s homer yesterday i noticed a big Toyota sign attached to the bleachers. Is that new? I know the new FO is doing new things with the advertising and right field bleachers, but haven’t heard or even seen that sign until watching highlights. And to be honest, I think it looks pretty good without putting too much advertisements everywhere like most ballparks now.

Breaking News: Cubs FO is bending over, dropping trou, and handing Dempster a strap-on…

  7. HawkClone

The stern face didn’t work for me because when I read, “Hey you guys,” I automatically read it the way Sloth says it in Goonies

    1. Cyranojoe

      Ha! Me too!

  8. MightyBear

Ooh scary face. That may get Colletti to give up Lee, Webster AND Reed.

Brett, love the photo updates, but let me offer you a suggestion. No matter how long The Wife naps, do NOT wake her up a 3am to take your picture. Repeat: do not.

  10. Heybails91

Thanks for the reminder, i just ordered my shirt!

Hear any discussion about a package of Dempster and Soriano to Dodgers? Levine said on ESPN.com talks have intensified. Or is that old news?

  12. someday...2015?

The first Ozzie move I like. I would of moved Z to the bullpen along time ago.

  13. Beer Baron

Carrie Muskat just tweeted a picture of Soriano and his son on the field. And if there’s one thing we’ve learned this year, when you bring your kids to the park you are expecting that to be your last day there (or not).

  14. Ogyu

Wow, before Twitter existed, whatever did people do to get 10,000 copies of the same link?

  15. G_Racin

What’s the problem with making the qualifying offer and either taking the supplemental draft pick if he declines or pitching him in 2013 if he accepts. If (when) we aren’t in contention, we could relive the same agony at the trade deadline next year! In all seriousness, the trade value for a proven veteran will be the same at the deadline next year as it is this year.

Speaking of BN shirts, I wore mine to a White Sox triple-a affiliate game. YOLO. Btw, people there actually knew what the site was about, which kind of surprised me considering where I live.

Well done on the radio Brett!

      Where station was Brett on?

  18. dudeski

    rizzomg is on intentional talk

If the Braves have already said that they are willing to redo the deal, WHY isn’t Mr. hypocrite
gone?? Why do we continue to suck up to those a..holes in LA?? They have said that none of the players we want are on the table. DUH!

  20. hansman1982

Wow, this is the greatest thing since Blogothon A.A

  21. Dr. Karl

No Lou Brock for Ernie Brolio type trades, please!!!!

  22. Ogyu

The “refresh” is getting sluggish. I fear the blogathon is going to crash the site…

  23. Cub Fan Dan

Good Idea Brett! I just got Mrs Cub Fan Dan a BN shirt for her b-day (dont worry, thats not gonna be the only thing I get her. Im not THAT bad of a husband).

  24. BD

This is a big “IF”… but IF the Cubs can say Dempster will accept trades to other places, and there is an appearance that Atlanta might offer Delgado back up, that would give the Cubs what they need to tell the Dodgers “Up the ante, or we’re outta here”- right?

  25. Bret Epic

The person they speak of here is interesting…

I’d be shocked if the Cubs get any long term value for Dempster or any player they want to trade. I think (IMO) the boys in the front office overvalued this roster and held out for a kings ransom. Now will most likely get nothing.

    1. BD

Have to disagree- they had a king’s ransom in Delgado. I think they did just fine, and didn’t see Dempster pulling his antics the way it played out.

      1. Ogyu

Really. I fail to see how getting Wren to agree to trade Delgado for Dempster constitutes overvaluing our roster.

  28. Ogyu

As long as Colletti sticks to his guns and doesn’t make a respectable offer for Dempster, I think there’s still a chance the Cubs end up with Delgado. The worst outcome would be if LA ends up offering a deal that’s just barely good enough for Dempster to be able to pressure the Cubs into accepting it, even though it’s not nearly as good as Delgado. If that happens, I will be pretty peeved.

Cubbies Crib – All the latest Cubs news and rumors

So going from the latest from @ESPNBruceLevine, it would seem Soriano is a part of Dempster package to LA if it indeed happens

    1. nkniacc13

Would you accept the package that the Dodgers are offering if they take Soriano and the Cubs don’t have to pay any of his salary? Not that i think that would happen

  30. gdub

What magical shirt are you wearing Wizard Brett? The Cubs logo was on the right in the first picture, on the left with your cat, and now back to the right. Please explain the mystery.

    1. Austin

Yea look at the Cubs sign on the wall, or should I say sbuc
