My body is shutting down on me, so this is very much my last post for the day. Tons to cover, I know, but it’ll have to wait until tomorrow.

The Cubs will make/have made three roster moves for tonight’s game, bringing up catching Welington Castillo, who will platoon with Steve Clevenger for the rest of the year, infielder Adrian Cardenas, and pitcher Casey Coleman, who’ll get the first crack at taking Ryan Dempster’s vacated spot in the rotation.

At some point, I suppose they’ll bring up another pitcher, who will go into the bullpen (since Justin Germano has moved into the rotation (for now)).

  • Luke D

They should get Cardenas some starts at third base.

    • J-Nasty

Agree, give him several starts in a row and see what he’s got. Need to know if he is an option for next year.

      • nkniacc13

well you could see if he can hit well enough to be a 2b and that would give the Cubs another trade chip in barney this offseason. id rather have Barney but I really think that they totally gut this team this offseason

    • RY34

hopefully so, cuz we already know what we have in valbuena and mather which isn’t a whole hell of a lot. throw ol adrian in there.

  • PJD

Sleep well Brett you deserve it and thanks again!!

  • MichiganGoat

This is the first game of the new Cubs in many ways lets see some more changes before August and enjoy the transition of the Cubs.

    • Mysterious4th

Its going to be a pretty painful one at times. But overall from the draft and trades theo & co get an A in my book. Looking forward to the offseason.

      • nkniacc13

Id have liked to see them get rid of baker and lahair but they did well with what they had a chance to do. Im really interested in seeing what they do this offseason after having a full year to look at the minors and decide who stays and who is moved and also who changes positions

      • Mat B

Not sure we can really grade them yet. It’s possible that many of the acquisitions will flop, and the 4 players who left could go on to really contribute even beyond this year. But, I am hopeful.

    • Beer Baron

AS long as Casey Coleman isn’t part of the future, I’m excited

  • Wilbur

Set the DVR and say goodnight Brett …

  • nkniacc13

I can’t wait untill Sept to see L. Castillo take the mound as a starter for the Cubs

  • Puma0821

So we only have 24 guys on the ML roster right now… who’s Next to be called up? Hopefully Cabrera?

    • cjdubbya

Maybe Lendy Castillo (the Rule 5 guy). He still has a long time left to be on the roster by the end of the year in order to keep him. He’s been getting stretched out as a starter in AZ, maybe he fills that 5th starter option?

      • nkniacc13

He can stay off the roster until Sept and still get enough time for the cubs to keep him.

  • Reed

Cardenas is terrible from what we’ve seen. I know he grew up a Cubs fan and all, but Valbuena has won my vote for the rest of this season by quite a wide margin, and if we don’t make a move this offseason I’m fine with him staying next season. Aside from absolutely brilliant defensive play, he has come through with some big hits in big situations and Ian Stewart was simply hard to watch the majority of the time…

    • Njriv

Yeah but look how Cardenas has been used, mostly a pinch hitter like once a week. He was on the team for like two months and only had 30 or so AB’s, he hardly gets any playing time. He tares it up when he plays everyday at Iowa. Give him consistent playing time in the majors, then we can judge him.

    • TWC

Ian Stewart was simply hard to watch the majority of the time…

      Ian Stewart this season (55 games, 179 ABs): .201/.292/.335 OPS+ of 71
      Luis Valbuena this season (38 games, 132 ABs): .198/.258/.339 OPS+ of 61

And you’re OK with that level of production next year? Swell. I hope the FO doesn’t agree with you.

      • Carew

    • Jeff1969

I don’t know what you were watcing but Valbuena is junk. Plain & simple. The prospect of him out there next year is absurd. Either Stewart gets another shot, Vitters steps in to see what he can do, Greg Rohan gets a shot, or they get some othr fill in. Valbuena is bye bye.

      • RY34

  • thejackal

iknow one thing ive became a big sf fan %*$# LAD

  • Mysterious4th

I am very anxious for the future but tonight I think will be a very hard game to watch with coleman on the mound. I would have rather seen volstad take the ball. Will the coleman rotation expirement end soon? As for valbuena, I know 3rd should be a power hitter position but his defense is 100x better then aramis.

  • Luke D

So it seems the Dbacks WERE trying to get Garza today…hmm…interesting.

    • Mysterious4th

So were the blue jays but the deal fell thru early this afternoon from all I’ve found online

  • koyiehillsucks

I hope Rusin gets a shot, ive had enough of Coleman… and volstad

  • die hard

Disappointed but still time to move Castro….how about him and Campana for Nats Harper who is slumping as league catches up to him at worst possible time in race

    • Sam

    • Rebuilding

No player is untradeable, but Harper is pretty damn close

      • DocPeterWimsey

Or Harper’s “slump” is just within the norms of something as probabilistic as baseball…..

    • Carew

      Why would you trade Castro

      • MichiganGoat

        Because its die hard

    • J R

Diehard you are a pretty funny guy. Not sure if you’re not serious, or just clueless. But you made me laugh any how…

      • baldtaxguy

He could be serious,,,and clueless, no?

  • nkniacc13

Im kinda surprised the Nats didn’t get another Sp

  • Rebuilding

Really interested to see whether the Soriano to Detroit rumors are true. It seems that money is no object for them so just maybe they pickup more of his salary than we had expected even of we only get a bag of balls back

    • nkniacc13

Tigers GM says never had talks with Cubs on Sori

      • Rebuilding

        Didn’t see that…good info

      • Brett

Wouldn’t put much into that. Some GMs are just deniers about stuff like that. I’m quite certain they spoke. In depth even.

        • Sam

Aren’t you supposed to be napping Brett? 😉

    • art

we asked for a bag of balls and were turned down.

  • NCMoss

Anyone know what’s up with I know it’s not time for the game yet but the cubs game is grayed out instead of giving the time it starts like usual. Is it not going to be available tonight?

    • NCMoss

  • NLIADad

K_Law says “Vizcaino, by a mile” in response to question of Vizcaino or Delgado?

    • nkniacc13

Didn’t Vizcaino pitch in majors last year?

      • someday…2015?

        Yes, out of the bullpen.

  • Cubs1967

Where is BJax? Cardenas fucking stupid. He”ll sit again. Sori nor dejesus or lahair the future.

    • Njriv

BJax is currently hitting .253 at Iowa.

    • Carew

      And waaaay to many K’s

  • Cubs5050

Brett, What do you think Paul M role will be in Texas

    • Mick

I doubt Brett’s going to be able to answer that…I’m riding on a restfull 8 hours of sleep and I can’t even put that together.

      • atfinch

        Lol Mick.

    • NCMoss

      Um, he’s in atlanta?

  • Tim

well he was traded to the braves, not the rangers

    • Mick

Does he mean versus the Astros? I would assume his role would be SP then.

  • Cubs505050

    Sorry braves

    • Mick

I’m sorry too Braves, Vizcaino was way too much to pay for Maholm and Reed.

    • THEOlogical

He will be in their starting rotation. Either Medlen or Sheets will be in the bullpen, depending on how each fairs in their upcoming starts. Medlen starts tonight but if he does well, I’d have to believe that he or Sheets will fight for the last remaining rotations spot.

  • Njriv

I’m sorry but Casey Coleman just needs to go home, give Rusin a chance.

    • MichiganGoat

      yeah he’s had enough chances

  • Dan

Yay! Grand Slam given up by Coleman. This is going to be a fun remaining year…

  • RY34

coleman sucks major ass; get the hell out of town scumbag!

  • art

why do they keep pitching the same old junk?

    • MichiganGoat

part of it I think is the FO doesn’t see any reason to rush up people for AAA and would rather just go with what we have and keep the clock from starting on anybody with promise

  • Luke D

That’s the game. TV is off.

  • Kevin

Ok, now let’s catch the Astros!

  • Lucas

Why hasn’t Coleman been designated yeT he hasn’t shown any sign of being good

  • RY34

hell i thought he wouldn’t hit 60 pitches until the third. looks like he will eclipse that in the second. what a disgrace.

  • calicubsfan007

I turned the Tv off after the grand slam in the first.

  • Turn Two

Like the effort and direction of the FO today, but wow I do not want to watch Lahair, Dejesus, Soriano and Valbueno the rest of the year.

    • Drew7

Are you saying you would have liked to see them traded, or that you just dont like them?
