Once upon a time, for reasons not entirely clear to most of us (though I know the mustache factors in there somewhere), former Chicago Cubs pitcher/executive – currently working for the San Francisco Giants – Dick Tidrow gained cult status on this site. He has become something of an unofficial mascot, and it would be inappropriate for an event such as the BNBlogathon to go by without an appearance.
So, for your late night viewing pleasure, I present: Dick Tidrow, through the years.

Another awful trade for the Indians there–Tidrow and Chris Chambliss to the Yankees for 4 nobodies. Ouch.
I remember after the Cubs traded for Tidrow, he was a damn fine reliever for us for a couple of years on some REALLY bad Cubs teams of that era. Tidrow was tough on RH batters because he had a semi-submarine style pitching motion, and he got a lot of GB outs. Like so many relievers, his period of excellence was short-lived, and eventually he played his way off the Cubs.
I looked over his career stats page before posting this to remind me of his exact numbers, his first year with the Cubs he was 11-5. How many relievers nowadays post 11 wins on the season? For a sub-500 ballclub? That’s impressive.

Great work today Brett. I just woke up. Off tonite after working 11 straight graveyards. Got 14 hours of sleep today! My favorite Tidrow card pictured is the 1981 Topps Coca Cola. I’ve got the Tidrow ‘stache going right now. My old lady hates it and friends say what the hell is that. I tell them that I’m gonna try out for a part in Boogie Nites 2.

This was before the Dick Tidrow Era with the Cubs, but when I was a kid, I had a poster on the wall of the 1977 Cubs. There was some quality facial hair, side burns and afros in that group.

Funny stuff about Tidrow in Sparky Lyle’s book The Bronx Zoo. A must read. I’ll never understand how Tid could make all those starts with that delivery.

I was part of NCAA Division III College World Series in 2009 and there was a program of previous record holders. One that caught my eye: Rusty Kuntz. Possibly best baseball name I’ve ever seen.
LIKE! That name, could see his name with a phrase something along the lines of, ” Rusty Kuntz on th mound again, digging deep and given it all he can!”
Actually googled his name and was a MLB player. Other great names, Pete la Cock(Cubs) and Dick Pole
