The Boise Hawks have clinched the second half division title and will be headed for the Northwest League playoffs. The best of three divisional series will begin on September 3 in Boise. After one game in Boise, the teams will move to Yakima for the rest of the series.

The Hawks have a very good team and should be considered an very strong contender to win the Northwest League championship. Just like games in the regular season, all of the Hawk’s playoffs contests can be listened to via the internet for free. Of course, I will have write ups of all the games in the Daily the next morning.

Peoria – The Chiefs opened up their home stand with a 3-2 win.
Boise – Boise scored eight times in the first four innings and then held on for an 8-4 win.
Arizona – The AZL Cubs scored in the bottom of the ninth to put this win away 8-7.

Performances of the Day

  • [Iowa] Ty’relle Harris needed just 81 pitches to throw six innings in this game. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out six.
  • [Iowa] The minor league veterans played well for the Cubs. Jeff Frazier doubled twice and Diory Hernandez homered to lead Iowa’s offense.
  • [Tennessee] Starter Nick Struck pitched seven innings and allowed just two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out six. The bullpen could not hold on to that lead, however.
  • [Tennessee] Logan Watkins hit his sixth home run and Rubi Silva tripled for the second time. Jae-Hoon Ha led all Smokies with three hits on the night.

  • [Daytona] Eduardo Figueroa pitched well in Game One. The starter did not allow a run on five hits over four innings while striking out six.
  • [Daytona] In Game Two is was Ryan Searle‘s turn to pitch well. The starter lasted five innings and gave up just one run on three hits while striking out five.
  • [Daytona] Between the two games, Ronald Torreyes finished the day 3 for 7 with a double and a triple. John Andreoli finished 2 for 6 with a double, a triple, and two walks.

  • [Peoria] Kuckleballer Joseph Zeller gave up just one run on seven hits over six innings in the Chiefs’ win.
  • [Peoria] The Chiefs scored all three of their runs on back to back home runs in the fourth inning by Chadd Krist and Timothy Saunders. Saunders also doubled in this game.
  • [Boise] Jeimer Candelario finished 3 for 5 with two doubles; Daniel Vogelbach was 2 for 5 with a double of his own. Between them the two sluggers totaled two runs scored and four RBI.
  • [Boise] Hunter Ackerman turned in a solid relief pitching performance in this game. He tossed 2.2 innings, allowed a run on two hits and a walk, and struck out five.
  • [Arizona] Ethan Elias tossed three innings of no-hit relief in which he struck out four.
  • [Arizona] Trevor Gretzky continues to play well after a slow start. He has now raised his average to .284 after another two hit performance in this game.
  • [Arizona] Justin Marra is emerging as a very interesting player to watch over the next few seasons. After two more walks in this game, the young catcher now has 19 BB against just 17 K in 27 games for Arizona. Anytime a young player has more walks than hits I sit up and take notice. His OPS of .924 is very nice too.

Other Minor League Notes

  • The AZL Cubs have also clinched a playoff berth by locking up the Arizona Rookie League Wild Card slot. The Cubs will be in a one game first round playoff match up against either the A’s or the Dodgers next week. The winner of that game will advance to the championship series. It is possible that the Cubs could still win their division out right, but that would not change their playoff picture significantly.
  • A BN’er was at last night’s Boise game and says that Albert Almora was removed early after tweaking a little something. He didn’t look too happy about being pulled (but was bracing himself a bit when he walked), and hopefully it’s just a minor, precautionary thing.

Keep Reading BN ...
