Dale Sveum totally Rickrolled me. A day after saying he would never (“never”) rest two regulars on the same day against a team in a playoff race, he’s resting three regulars. I guess that’s not two, so he was right. Joe Mather, Josh Vitters (who’s been replaced as a “regular” by Luis Valbuena), and Dave Sappelt get starts today.

I’m not complaining, mind you. Though I’m not sure Mather leading off makes much sense any day of the year.

At this point I am just pulling for Soriano to get 100 RBI’s and for the Cubs to not lose 100 games. Not much else to root for. Hopefully Sappelt does well in his chances.

Why is Brett Jackson not in the line-up? Pretty sure this young kid does not need a rest. We need to see what he can do with as many trips to the plate as possible.

    • Flashfire

Most likely: the 3 K’s yesterday were the result of regression in his approach, and he’s being given a day to think about it.

  • art

Dale has rested as many as 3 “regulars” many times this year.

  • Picklenose

Sveum said on the pregame show he wants to get more right handed, fastball lovers in the lineup today. His words, not mine.

  • cubmig

Like all of you I wonder about Sveum’s lineups…………but this season is gone. The Cubs are in audition mode. Nothing may make sense to us. To the FO, manager and staff, however, the players they field fit their “logic”, and that’s all that counts. We have to sit. watch and bitch. It’s our lot. Whatever pain or surprise joy the on-going auditioning unleashes, that’s ours to process as we think about next year.

Sometimes the present only makes sense with perspective—-especially when the focus is on development.

  • ferrets_bueller

Technically, the Cubs don’t have many ‘regulars.’ They just have a bunch of guys who play all the time because everyone else sucks more.

Dear lord….. why is Mather batting leadoff?

I did not see where Sveum said he would not rest two regular on the same day. I recall him saying he would not rest two of (Soriano, Casto, Rizzo) if playing a contender. I think we can agree that after those three, the chances of winning doesn’t change much.

    Andrew Simon’s story reads:

“Sveum said he will give days off if, “it’s called for or we’re not playing contending teams.” The Nationals fall into that category, so the regulars are likely to play in this series. At the least, Castro, Rizzo and Soriano won’t be on the bench at the same time.

“You can’t ever think about giving two of those guys the same day off,” Sveum said. “You have to pick those days and figure out who needs them mentally or physically. It’s a little bit of a crap shoot sometimes.”

  • RY34

must be hard pitching with this worthless offense behind you day in and day out! of course when we do score runs, the bullpen just chokes it away anyway.

  • RY34

    vitters continues to look awful.

  • Josh

Vitters strikes out to end the game. Why am I not surprised? I almost wish the Cubs would go after David Wright just for kicks. 3B has been atrocious this season and I think that is still an understatement

    • Bric

Josh Vitters= Ryan Harvey= Mark Pawalek= Hayden Simpson= the worst scouting and drafting in the league.

      • RY34

        agreed, total embarassment!

    • Flashfire

If the Mets actually let David Wright go, the Cubs should certainly kick the tires on that one. It would let them move Baez to second (if I keeps the range) and give them quite possibly the best second-short-third combo in the majors.

Congratulations to Brett Jackson for his 200th strikeout of the season between AAA and MLB.
