Ah, the Cards can’t feel too good about that one.

Chris Carpenter’s return to pitching was probably successful, though he wasn’t exactly facing the 1927 Yankees. It was good enough to beat the Cubs, I suppose, is what I mean.

But it didn’t, because the Cubs came roaring back behind a two-run, two-out, two-strike homer by Darwin Barney in the bottom of the 9th. That tied things up, and David DeJesus knocked a walk-off single in the 11th.

As silly and backwards as it is, maybe Barney’s offensive heroics will help put him over the top …

Took me a minute, but I see the gold glove now. It is kind of like one of those magic eyes, if you cross your eyes and let the image go out of focus it is easier to see.

    Just kidding.

    • Ash

It’s like a golden shower of praise. Well done.

  • Featherstone

No love for DeJesus’s 4 hit game including the walk-off knock with 2 outs in a 2 strike count?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

What love do you want? He got a mention. The enhancement isn’t always the player of the game or anything like that (and, even still, it might as well have been Barney … ).

  • Richard Nose

That looks more like a Golden Clam.

  • Mysterious4th

Brett is the next picaso! :-P

  • mudge

I thought it was an advanced Kama Sutra position.

I almost didn’t add the parenthetical explanation at the end in the hopes that you guys would drop funny comments like you have.

Fortunately, you did it anyway. I love you all.

    It’s the golden clam!!!!!!

  • IndyCubsFan

Oh and Brett, the Gold Glove you drew looks like something one of my Kindergarten students would draw. I’d give you a sticker with a cartoon frog smiling if I had one lol Good work, my friend!

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I’d put it on my fridge!

  • Stinky Pete

Cubs winning is ALWAYS good and I would never complain. We are in a dog fight for #2 pick so I won’t actually complain about a loss either right now. Beating the Cardinals is ALWAYS good so I surely won’t complain about that. Chance to knock Cards out of playoffs? Perfect. Tie the game up on last strike from a guy not generally known for his power? I need clean shorts. Let’s whoop ‘em tomorrow too!

  • Patrick G

1 walk?? Cubs need to learn to get some eyes and be patient

    • Mat B

Yeah, only one walk, but there were a lot of 6, 7 & 8 pitch at bats.

      • ripitrizzo82

tru story. I was serving food at m

  • N8theGr8

I thought it was a caricature of Brandon Phillips…

  • ColoCubFan

Kozma’s steal of home had to be the easiest one in the history or the game!

  • ripitrizzo82

The Gold glove looks like a bullfrog with a crown :)

    • Richard Nose

Frog King from South Park Lemmiwinks episode? Yup.

      • N8theGr8

        Brandon “Lemmiwinks Frog King” Phillips

  • JK

I was thinking of an old school tv antennae or a typewriter on fire. Either way Cubs win.

  • fortyonenorth

Lotta love to go around on this one: DDJ, Cabrera, Sori, Sappelt with a good bunt in the 11th, BJax for aggressive baserunning and, of course, Barney. If that guy could learn to hit on the road….

  • BFiddy

At the game today for the first time since ’09 (teaching in China since early ’10).

What a game to come back to…Cards fans stood up and started cheering with 2 strikes on DeJesus in the 9th…was ready to go home just happy that we avoided a rain delay and played all 9.

    Then he gets a single.

My dad to the row of Cards fans in front of us: “Sit down guys, you’re gonna be here a while!”

Funny, but tbh I didn’t expect Barney to rock one out through that stiff wind blowing straight in from left. What a shot…best moment of the game by far..didn’t hear a peep from the Cards’ fans until after the game was over: “100 years since you won World Series, etc, etc.”

DeJesus walk-off was pretty sweet, too.

Overlooked moment of the game? Alberto Cabrera making Matt Holliday look really bad with three straight breaking balls to K him in the top of the 11th.

My hipster brother showed up at the game with no Cubs gear on. Left with a Darwin Barney T-Shirt Jersey…win.

    • mudge

      awesome post, thanks Bfiddy!

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      Outstanding.

    • MoneyBoy

^ Bfiddy … you, sir, deserve a hearty “THIS!!!!”

  • bluekoolaidaholic

    WAY TO GO DARWIN!
Oh yes, and thanks David, and Phonzie and Cabrera and Sappelt too.
Actually, most of the bullpen looked good, (even Marmol).
I’d love to get #2 pick, but beating the F…ing Cardinals is soooooo goood.
Don’t you just love shutting them up when they are all arrogant and standing there all ready to celebrate with 2 out in the 9th?
Let’s just rain on their parade even more and sweep their sorry A$$es and help knock them out of contention.
    Where is Berkman’s smirk now?
Where are all the Barney bashers now?
    Brandon who??

  • Bric

Brett, I’ve always wondered how you’re able to draw over the box score. Is it an app?

    • Melrosepad

On a PC you could just use the Snipping Tool to cut and paste it into your choice of graphic program then have your way with it. I assume Mac has something similar.

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

      GIMP.

      • Bric

This how little I know about computers- when I saw your response my first thought was Grounded into double play.
