Appropriately, the Cubs and Astros – the two worst teams in baseball – square off in their final series of 2012. The Cubs bid the Astros farewell, as they’ll head to the AL West next year.

If you think there’s no reason to go to a game this series, by the way, think again: in the first two games, the Cubs are giving away Cubs hats in the colors of your favorite Big Ten school with a bleacher ticket package thingy. The Michigan hat looks pretty sweet, if I do say so myself.

By way of reminder, the Series Preview hooks you up with what you need to know about every series this year – streaks, broadcast information, pitchers, expected lineups, etc. That way, if you want to check only one place to get a sense about an upcoming series, or to plan ahead, you’ve got it. Oh, and there will be pictures of beautiful women, too.

We’re Going Streaking

The Cubs won a game out West! Hooray! Let’s end the season on that thought. Also, the Cubs will try to avoid 100 losses. It only takes one at this point.

The Astros have actually won five of nine, which has got to be their best stretch since May. They’ll still finish with at least 106 losses.

Expected Starters and Lineups

These lineups are likely to be pretty close to what actually gets fielded, but you’ll want to check each day’s Pre-Gamin’ post for the actual lineup.

Starters: Jason Berken (0-2, 5.14), Chris Volstad (3-11, 6.64), Travis Wood (6-13, 4.39)

  1. David DeJesus, CF
  2. Darwin Barney, 2B
  3. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  4. Alfonso Soriano, LF
  5. Starlin Castro, SS
  6. Luis Valbuena, 3B
  7. Steve Clevenger/Welington Castillo, C
  8. Dave Sappelt, RF (Brett Jackson getting some time in center again, too)
  9. Pitcher

Starters: Lucas Harrell (10-11, 3.88), Bud Norris (6-13, 4.82), Edgar Gonzalez (3-1, 4.15)

Lineups (could you tell if I was kidding?):

  1. Dan Jackson, SS
  2. Barry Almose, 2B
  3. Javier Valazquez, C
  4. Brian Steebs, RF
  5. Rhubarb Petty, 3B
  6. Carl Rinner, Sr., CF
  7. “Sweet” Peppi Montrose, LF
  8. Julio Franco, 1B
  9. Pitcher

Hot or Not and Whom to Watch

Dave Sappelt has gotten hot again, and has a .300/.382/.500 line in his 69 plate appearances with the big club. He’s pretty much locked in as a back-up outfielder next year, and it isn’t solely because of the stats.

Alfonso Soriano will try to improve on his 32 homers and 108 RBI this year, which is his highest homer total since 2007, his first season with the Cubs. That RBI total is his highest ever. His .263/.322/.503 line is the best he’s put up since a shortened 2008 season (speaking of shortened seasons, the 149 games he’s played this year is already his most as a Cub).

Oh, Chris Volstad. Just when it looked like you were maybe going to kinda-sorta show a little something, you go and put up an 8.74 ERA in five September starts.

Lucas Harrell has been as good as it gets for the Astros these days – he’s got a 3.07 ERA in the second half, which is swell.

Did you know that Jose Altuve is just 22? That’s a nice little player the Astros have down there. (Ba dum ching.)

Series She-View

The Series She-View is one beautiful woman representing the Cubs taking on another (usually) beautiful woman representing the opponent. The Cubs’ representative will change as the team’s needs change – in other words, if the Cubs are winning, the rep will stay the same. But if the Cubs’ performance calls for a change, someone new will step in. The opponent’s representative will change from series to series, at my whim. But at least she’ll probably be wearing the opponent’s colors or have some connection to the team or something like that. It is immature, and the connection to baseball is tenuous at best. These things, I know.

For the final Series She-View of the season (ever?), let’s end things where it began: with the inimitable Marisa Miller representing the Cubs.

As for the Astros, you know who was born in Houston? The beautiful and talented Beyonce. A nice match-up to close things down. A better match-up than on the field, anyway.

  • JB88

The best part of this season might just be the She-View.

    • hardtop

no doubt. certainly isnt the pitching/offense/win total.

  • ssckelley

It would be neat to see Soriano go nuts in this series. He only trails the RBI leader by 5. I would hate to see the Cubs lose 100 games so I am hoping for a sweep.

  • bails17

What do you mean by (ever)???? Clarify my man.

    • bails17

Waiting for an answer on this one, Brett.

      • TWC

There was some talk about this last year…

        • FFP

“That RBI total is his (Soriano’s) highest ever”
Yah, should be “so far” ’cause he might get more next year–

          The She-View.
          I’m not liking this.
If Brett means the She-View feature is over; then oh, welI (and I’ll blame (credit?) Mrs. Brett (or little Brettette’s positive effect on Brett’s maturation.))
If he means the site that features the She-View, then I am VERY nervous.

          waiting with you, bails17

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

I just mean that it’s not a lock to return as a feature next year. It’s kind of a polarizing thing – some people REALLY like it; others REALLY don’t like it. And it is a little … juvenile/sexist/icky … but, then again, it’s fun. So, yeah, I’m torn.

      • King Jeff

If we can’t be juvenile/sexist/icky on the internet, then where are we supposed to have our fun?

      • TWC

2013 is the year of the Series TWC-view.

I just need to save up the pennies for the Bleacher Nation banana hammock.

        • Katie

If I as a female reader aren’t offended, why are you guys offended? Who cares if there’s scantily clad women on here? I’m just offended they aren’t pics of me. Other than that, what’s the big deal?!

          • Katie

Also, I would pay five American dollars for some TWC ‘nana hammock action.

            • TWC

              That’s *IT*?!

              I’m easily worth six.

              • Katie

Eh, I suppose. But only if you pose with the ukulele.

                • TWC

                  It’s a mandolin.

                  Ukeleles are for hipsters.

                  • hansman1982

and mandolins are for 13th century bards…

                    • TWC

                      Those are *lutes*.

For frack’s sake, can’t you kids keep your stringed instruments straight?

                  • Katie

Well, you can see how closely I examined your mandolin, which is to say I didn’t at all. Sorry.

                  • hardtop

oh my, is there a hippie vs. hipster feud a-brewin’?!?

you long hairs and your tiny instruments….

  • Featherstone

What are ya doing Brett?! Do you want the Cubs to sweep the Astros and lose the 2nd pick?! How can you pair Marissa Miller vs Beyonce and not expect bad things to happen! If we pick 3rd next year I’m blaming this squarely on you.

  • North Side Irish

I heard Pat Hughes say yesterday that tonight’s pitching match up is Lucas Harrell vs. Jason Berken and it took me a minute to remember which one of those was a Cub. Slowing down in my old age.

    • BFiddy

  • http://www.backingthepack.com Rynomite

Between all the bones sticking out and the eye makeup, Miller looks like a holocaust victim. Get that young lady a cheeseburger.

  • Luke D

Didn’t things start with Kate Upton this year?

    • http://www.bleachernation.com Brett

This year, yes. In the life of the site, though, it’s Marisa.

      • King Jeff

Marisa used to take on all comers. She’s really showing her age by only showing up as our rep against the Astros…

  • JMack4568

Brett, what do you think it will take to pry Rhubarb Petty away from the ‘Stros this off-season?

    • hcs

I don’t know if that’s the kind of risk the Cubs should be taking. I mean, who knows if he’s fully recovered from his Brain Cloud. I mean, until just a few years ago, there was no hope for recovery at all.

  • Patrick W.

I’m in favor of moving the She-view to the message board.

    • hardtop

what? its the best part of the season! absolutely no reason to move it, not to mention its a bleacher nation tradition.

      • Austin

Seeing your name and then you talking about the She-view made me laugh. (Long day)

      • Patrick W.

It’s okay to have, you know, an opinion, right? I don’t see how it’s a big hardship put a link to it in the series preview the way there’s a link to the game thread in the game preview.

Do you “really” think it’s the best part of the season? The very best part? Because if I was Brett, I might be just a tad bit offended :)

The best part of the Series preview for me is learning things I might not have paid attention to… like the Lucas Harrell note above. I tend to read the Series preview at work, and quickly flashing my screen down past the ladies is a minor annoyance.

  • MightyBear

I personally think we should have some offseason she-views. Examples are an organizational she-view, a winter meetings she-view, a cubs convention she-view, a pitchers catchers report she-view, first day of spring training she-view, etc.

    That’s just a personal opinion.

  • Spencer

I think the black and gold hat looks better…Boiler up!! Denard is in for a long afternoon Saturday.

  • cubzforlife

Going to tonites game with high school friends I haven’t seen in 30 years and wed game with my seven year old. Win or lose I’m going to support our boys. Plus I want to be able to say I attended the Cubs 100 th loss. With pride.

  • Ogyu

Okay, I’m starting a write-in campaign for Ernest Borgnine in the She-View:

    • N8theGr8

Amen, Brother! It is a tough image to shake! It’s just how the season left me feeling…

I am all for the immaturity that comes with the series she-view. Other than baseball one of the best things is seeing hot girls at the ballpark so why shouldn’t we also see them here.
